Genetic variation in plant CYP51s confers resistance against voriconazole, a novel inhibitor of brassinosteroid-dependent sterol biosynthesis.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are plant steroid hormones with structural similarity to mammalian sex steroids and ecdysteroids from insects. The BRs are synthesized from sterols and are essential regulators of cell division, cell elongation and cell differentiation. In this work we show that voriconazole, an antifungal therapeutic drug used in human and veterinary medicine, severely impairs plant growth by inhibiting sterol-14α-demethylation and thereby interfering with BR production. The plant growth regulatory properties of voriconazole and related triazoles were identified in a screen for compound

Establishment of in vitro adventitious root cultures and analysis of andrographolide in Andrographis paniculata.

Andrographolide is the principal bioactive component of the medicinal plant Andrographis paniculata, to which various diverse pharmacological properties are attributed. Traditionally, andrographolide was extracted from the leaves, stems and other parts of the plant. Leaves have the highest andrographolide content (2-3%) in comparison with the other plant parts. Adventitious root culture of leaf explants of A. paniculata was studied using different strength MS medium supplemented by different concentrations of auxins and a combination of NAA + kinetin for growth and andrographolide production.

Lipophilic stinging nettle extracts possess potent anti-inflammatory activity, are not cytotoxic and may be superior to traditional tinctures for treating inflammatory disorders.

Extracts of four plant portions (roots, stems, leaves and flowers) of Urtica dioica (the stinging nettle) were prepared using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) involving water, hexanes, methanol and dichloromethane. The extracts were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic activities in an NF-κB luciferase and MTT assay using macrophage immune (RAW264.7) cells. A standardized commercial ethanol extract of nettle leaves was also evaluated. The methanolic extract of the flowering portions displayed significant anti-inflammatory activity on par with a standard compound celastrol (1

Metabolomic Approaches in Assessing the Insecticidal Activity of the Extracts from Argemone ochroleuca Sweet (Papaveraceae) Against Three Diverse Crop Pests of Economic Importance.

For years, crop protection from pest attack, has been dominated by the use of synthetic insecticides. However, many of them can cause severe environmental problems and human health. In this context, the use of plant extracts constitutes an alternative to avoid this kind of contaminants. In this work, we investigated the chemical constituents and insecticidal activity of different extracts of leaves and stems of Argemone ochroleuca Sweet (Papaveraceae) against three economically important pests Sitophilos zeamais (Coleoptera:Curculionidae), Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera:Pyralidae) and Xylebo

Induction of the Phenylpropanoid Pathway by Acibenzolar-S-Methyl and Potassium Phosphite Increases Mango Resistance to Ceratocystis fimbriata Infection.

This study used both microscopic and biochemical analyses to investigate the possible defense responses induced by acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) and potassium phosphite (Phi) in mango plants inoculated with Ceratocystis fimbriata. Disease development was evaluated in the stems of inoculated mango plants and these were examined using fluorescence and light microscopy. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to quantify secondary metabolites in the stem sections. Spraying the plants with ASM and Phi reduced internal necrosis and disease development. The ASM and Phi induced many micro

Vertebrate predators as hidden players in ant-plant mutualisms: costs, resistance, and recovery.

Ant-plant mutualisms are typically framed as two-species exchanges in which plants provide food and shelter in return for herbivore defense. Yet ants are themselves valuable prey, potentially attracting vertebrate predators that impose hidden structural costs on host plants. Here, I argue that such interactions incur partner-associated indirect costs: plants may suffer damage not from their partners directly, but because those partners attract vertebrate predators. Using the Azteca-Cecropia mutualism as a focal example, I synthesize evidence that anteaters and woodpeckers excavate ant-occupied

Proprioception drives tension wood formation for autotropic straightening and postural control in trees.

Postural control in plant shoots relies on gravi- and photo- tropisms, driven by angular sensing and actuated by differential growth or reaction wood formation (tension wood in dicots). Control theory and kinematical models predict that posture stabilization additionally requires active counter-curving. This led to the hypothesis that plants actively straighten through proprioception (curvature sensing) driving autotropic actuation. However, passive springback can be involved, especially in woody stems, and direct conclusive experimental evidence for proprioception-driven autotropism has been

Identification of proteins involved in Hg-Se antagonism in water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes).

Different studies have established the presence of a proteinaceus complex involved in Hg-Se agonism/antagonism in plants. In order to identify proteins involved in this mechanism, water hyacinth plants were divided into groups and supplemented with Hg, Se and a Hg-Se mixture. Proteins involved were identified through a screening separation by SEC-ICPMS followed by SAX-ICPMS and then peptide mapping of selected fractions by nanoLC-ESI-ITMS(2). Determination of total metal concentration showed that Se inhibits Hg translocation from roots to aerial compartments of the plant and that Se and Hg are

The role of minerals in food selection in a black howler monkey (Alouatta pigra) population in Belize following a major hurricane.

As plants may contain low levels of some minerals including sodium, copper, and phosphorous, herbivores may become deficient in these nutrients. In 2001, Hurricane Iris hit the Monkey River Forest in Belize causing substantial damage to the food supply of the black howler monkey population (Alouatta pigra) living there. This included an 18-month absence in fruit production and a complete loss of figs that are high in calcium. In this article, we describe the post-hurricane diet of this monkey population and compare the mineral content of food items to each other and to recommendations for non-

Plant Trait-Based Life Strategies of Overlapping Species Differ Between Anthropogenically Disturbed and Conserved Forests.

Global forest ecosystems face escalating threats from intensive anthropogenic disturbances. Plants inhabiting forests with contrasting disturbance histories often evolve divergent life history strategies, as reflected in functional trait differences across heterogeneous environments. However, most previous studies have inadequately controlled for the confounding effect of species identity, as anthropogenic disturbances markedly alter community composition; such compositional turnover obscures the precise attribution of trait variation to environmental drivers. In this study, we comprehensively

Mercapto-functionalized palygorskite modified the growth of Ligusticum Chuanxiong and restrained the Cd migration in the soil-plant system.

Ligusticum Chuanxiong is an essential medicinal and edible plant, but it is highly susceptible to the enrichment of soil Cadmium (Cd), which seriously affects its medical safety. However, the control of Cd uptake by Ligusticum Chuanxiong is little reported. In this study, we reported that a green Mercapto-functionalized palygorskite (MPAL) effectively promoted Ligusticum Chuanxiong growth, and restrained the Cd uptake by Ligusticum Chuanxiong both in the mildly contaminated soil (M-Soil) and severely contaminated soil (S-Soil). The experimental results demonstrated that the application of MPAL
