Journal of parasitic diseases : official organ of the Indian Society for Parasitology2010eng
Acacia oxyphylla has been used traditionally by the natives of Mizoram against intestinal worm infections. In the present study, the crude methanolic extract of the plant was tested in vitro on the cestode parasite Raillietina echinobothrida to evaluate its potential anthelmintic efficacy. The test parasites were exposed to varying concentrations of the plant extract in phosphate buffered saline and they all slipped into a flaccid paralytic state at varying periods of time post incubation. Ultrastructural observations on the paralysed worms revealed wide scale destruction of the parasite tegum

Plants play a cardinal role in removing various pollutants through the synergistic interaction with filling materials and microbes of constructed wetlands (CWs). However, the information regarding the selection of plant species to remove pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) is not adequate. The present study attempted to select an appropriate plant species for CWs, considering their characteristics and physiological response to PhACs. In this regard, batch hydroponics studies were carried out to assess the removal, fate, and antioxidative response of carbamazepine (CBZ) in four wetland pl

Zinc or copper deficiency and salinity are known soil problems and often occur simultaneously in agriculture soils. Plants undergo various changes in physiological and biochemical processes to respond to high salt in the growing medium. There is lack of information on the relation of exogenous application of Zn and Cu with important salinity tolerance mechanisms in plants. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the effect of foliar Zn and Cu on two maize cultivars (salt-tolerant cv. Yousafwala Hybrid and salt-sensitive cv. Hybrid 1898). Salinity caused a significant reduction

ERECTA gene family encodes leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinases that control major aspects of plant development such as elongation of aboveground organs, leaf initiation, development of flowers, and epidermis differentiation. To clarify the importance of ERECTA signaling for the development of soybean (Glycine max), we expressed the dominant-negative ERECTA gene from Arabidopsis thaliana that is truncated in the kinase domain (AtΔKinase). Expression of AtΔKinase in soybean resulted in the short stature, reduced number of leaves, reduced leaf surface area and enhanced branching in the tran

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the most common and harmful air pollutants. High concentrations of SO2 can induce a series of defensive responses in Arabidopsis plants. However, the role of photosynthesis in the plant response to SO2 stress is not clear. Here, we report the photosynthetic responses of Arabidopsis plants to SO2 stress. Exposure to 30 mg/m3 SO2 decreased stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (Tr) but increased photosynthetic pigments and net photosynthetic rate (Pn). The contents of carbohydrates and sucrose were not altered. The transcript levels of most genes related

With the popularization of upland rice cultivation and the intensification of global warming, drought tolerance in rice has become a critical agronomic challenge. Plant endophytes can establish symbiotic relationships with host plants and enhance plant stress tolerance. Previous studies have demonstrated that Phomopsis liquidambaris B3 (P. liquidambaris B3) can form a stable symbiosis with rice and improve plant disease resistance. However, whether this strain can enhance rice drought tolerance remains unclear. In this study, a 7-day water-withholding treatment was imposed on rice at the seedl

Waxes within the leaf cuticle, the outermost layer of the plant leaf, play a defining role as a transpiration barrier and also serve as an important target for agrochemical interventions for crop protection. A prevailing model for this behaviour is the role of wax 'bricks' in building the diffusion barrier. This review brings together crystallographic and microstructural research to highlight the variety of crystalline, disordered, and amorphous structural features known in waxes. We trace two predominant research routes applied to leaf waxes: one directed at simplified waxes but with highly d

Recently, the application of salicylic acid (SA) for improving a plant's resistance to abiotic stresses has increased. A large part of the irrigated land (2.1% out of 19.5%) is severely affected by salinity stress worldwide. In 2020, total production of wheat (Triticum aestivum) was 761 million tons, representing the second most produced cereal after maize; therefore, research on its salinity tolerance is of world concern. Photosynthetic attributes such as net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), and transpiration rate (E) were increased si

Eucalyptus is a promising species for ecological restoration but plant performances under environmental constraints need to be better investigated. In particular, the toxic effects of metals on this plant species are poorly described in the literature. In this work, morpho-physiological and biochemical responses to cadmium were analysed in two eucalypt genotypes (hybrid clones of Eucalyptus camaldulensis × Eucalyptus globulus ssp. bicostata J.B. Kirkp named Velino ex 7 and Viglio ex 358) exposed for 3 weeks to 50 μM CdSO4 under hydroponics. The two eucalypt clones showed a different sensitivit

Hydrological assessment in ungauged watersheds is challenging due to the lack of streamflow observations, and remote sensing (RS) products have emerged as viable in such regions. However, previous studies have relied on a single optimal parameter set and have not considered uncertainty into scenario based simulations. To address this gap, this study evaluated the applicability of an RS-evapotranspiration (ET)-based calibration framework using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), incorporating multiple behavioral parameter sets to explicitly account for equifinality. Six scenarios were ev

The intrinsic water use efficiency (W) of trees serves as a key variable linking water and carbon fluxes in forest ecosystems. Interannual variations in aridity (e.g., represented by the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index, SPEI) can cause changes in W. However, it is unclear whether the aridity constraint on W, as indicated by the sensitivity of W to SPEI (SW), has changed with recent climate change. Here, we use stable carbon isotope abundance of tree rings from 296 sites to estimate interannual variation of W and SW. SW is defined as the slope in a linear regression of W aga

Studying the relationship between Moso bamboo sap flow and environmental factors is essential for understanding the water transpiration patterns of this species. Traditional methods often rely on correlation analysis, but correlation does not imply causation. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms of how major environmental factors influence Moso bamboo sap flow, we analyzed the causality between them. First, the Fast Causal Inference algorithm was used to explore non-temporal causal relationships. Subsequently, the Latent Peter-Clark Momentary Conditional Independence algorithm was employed t

Changes in atmospheric CO2 are known to influence plant physiology, subsequently affecting the nature of their interactions with their biotic environment. Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), one of the most widespread and damaging viruses of small grains, is transmitted by cereal aphids and has a broad range of cultivated and uncultivated hosts from the Poaceae family. Here, we examined the effects of elevated CO2 on plant physiology, Rhopalosiphum padi L. performance, and the accumulation of BYDV (strain BYDV-PAV) in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), foxtail barley (Hordeum jubatum L.), and

This study investigates the impact of Zinc Solubilizing Bacteria (ZSB) and their consortia on key physiological and biochemical in two rice varieties, PD 26 and NDR 359, over two consecutive growing seasons (2022 and 2023). Unlike individual bacterial strains, microbial consortia harness the synergistic interactions between multiple species, leading to enhanced zinc solubilization efficiency and improved plant responses. The application of consortia significantly boosted the activities of zinc-dependent enzymes, including carbonic anhydrase (CA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). It also signific

To meet future requirements for food production, sustainable intensive agricultural systems need to optimize nutrient availability to maximize yield, traditionally achieved by maintaining soil pH within an optimal range (6-6.5) by applying lime (calcium carbonate). However, a field trial that applied recommended liming rates to a sandy loam soil (increasing soil pH from 5.5 to 6.2) decreased pod yield of field bean (Vicia faba L. cv. Fuego) by ~30%. Subsequent pot trials, with liming that raised soil pH to 6.3-6.7, reduced stomatal conductance (g(s)) by 63, 26, and 59% in V. faba, bean (Phaseo

The productivity of chestnut trees (Castanea sativa Mill.) is strongly affected by high temperatures and reduced water availability, phenomena exacerbated by climate change. However, the physiological effects of heat and drought exposure in this species remain poorly characterised, particularly, in local varieties of national relevance. In this study, we investigated the primary metabolism of young plants of the Martaínha variety subjected to drought (25% of maximum water-holding capacity) and/or high temperatures (42°C, 4 h day-1). After 21 days of stress, exposure to heat alone induced disti

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the heavy metals that negatively affects the growth of plants. High solubilization in water leads Cd to enter into plants quite easily, thus decreasing seed germination, photosynthesis, and transpiration. It also shows an antagonistic effect with many of the plants' nutrients like Mn, Ca, K, Mg and Fe. Nowadays, inoculation of plants with ACC deaminase (ACCD) rhizobacteria to mitigate Cd's adverse effects has drawn the attention of environmental microbiologists. The rhizobacteria secrete organic compounds that can immobilize Cd in soil. Therefore, this study was accompli

Stomata are epidermal pores that control the exchange of gaseous CO2 and H2O between plants and their environment. Modulating stomatal density can alter this exchange and thus presents a viable target for engineering improved crop productivity and climate resilience. Here, we show that stomatal density in Arabidopsis thaliana can be decreased by the expression of a water-forming NAD(P)H oxidase targeted to stomatal precursor cells. We demonstrate that this reduction in stomatal density occurs irrespective of whether the expressed enzyme is localized to the cytosol, chloroplast stroma or chloro

Dynamic remediation of river water polluted by domestic sewage using an aquatic plants bed-based Eco-tank system was investigated. Over a period of 18 days, the test demonstrated that average effluent concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonium nitrogen (NH4(+)-N) and total phosphorus (TP) were as low as 17.28, 0.23 and 0.03 mg/L, respectively, under the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 8.7 d. The average removal efficiencies in terms of COD, NH4(+)-N and TP could reach 71.95, 97.96 and 97.84%, respectively. The loss of both NH4(+)-N and TP was mainly ascribed to the uptake by pl

Soil salinity and bacterial spot of tomato (BST), caused by Xanthomonas perforans, are major abiotic and biotic stresses limiting tomato production, particularly in Florida. While their individual effects are well documented, the impact of soil salinity on BST has not yet been investigated. This greenhouse study evaluated how increasing irrigation water salinity (electrical conductivity [EC] = 0.5, 3, 5, or 7 dS m-1) affected tomato growth, physiology, BST severity, fruit quality, and transcriptomic responses. Salinity reduced plant growth and BST severity but did not directly affect X. perfor
