Medicinal plants and Alzheimer's disease: Integrating ethnobotanical and contemporary scientific evidence.

The use of complementary medicines such as plant extracts in dementia therapy, varies according to the different cultural traditions. In orthodox Western medicine, contrasting with that in China and the Far East for example, pharmacological properties of traditional cognitive or memory enhancing plants have not been widely investigated in the context of current models of Alzheimer's disease. An exception is Ginkgo biloba in which the ginkgolides have antioxidant, neuroprotective, and cholinergic activities relevant to Alzheimer's disease mechanisms. The therapeutic efficacy of Ginkgo biloba ex

Microbiological screening of Indian medicinal plants with special reference to enteropathogens.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended that all member states actively promote native medicines in their country. Ten Indian medicinal plants were screened for antibacterial activity specific to enteropathogens. Diffusion and dilution methods were used to measure the antibacterial activity. Allium sativum, Camellia sinensis, and Chamaesyce hirta showed higher activity when compared to the rest. They had a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of < 100 micrograms/ml and gave inhibition zones of more than 2 cm. Among the pathogens studied, Vibrio cholerae and Shigella flexneri we

Search for antifungal, molluscicidal and larvicidal compounds from African medicinal plants.

African medicinal plants provide a rich source of biologically-active natural products. By the use of simple bioassays in conjunction with an approach involving bioactivity guided fractionation, it is possible to isolate novel compounds with interesting properties. Several hundred plant extracts have been submitted to different screens, including bioautography on TLC plates with the fungi Cladosporium cucumerinum and Candida albicans. Among the other test systems are a bioassay for molluscicidal activity with the schistosomiasis-transmitting snail Biomphalaria glabrata and a benchtop assay for

Medicinal plants as biological and socio-ecological components of One Health.

Although the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 40% of contemporary pharmaceuticals are derived from natural products and traditional knowledge sources, medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) remain underrepresented in global health policy frameworks. While the One Health concept emphasizes the interdependence of human, animal, and environmental health, MAPs have historically been viewed mainly as passive resources rather than as dynamic biological and ecological actors. This review synthesizes interdisciplinary evidence published from 2015 to 2025 to reframe medicinal

Drought stress affecting the production of secondary metabolites in medicinal plants.

Due to production of some important biochemicals including secondary metabolites (SM), medicinal plants are of economic and health significance. However, medicinal plants are subjected to different types of stress including drought affecting their growth and biochemical properties including SM production. There is an increasing demand for cultivation of medicinal plants and subsequent production of SM as suitable alternatives for conventional pharmaceuticals. Additionally, although research has indicated drought stress may alter SM production in medicinal plants, affecting their health and eco

In-silico identification of anti-cholera phytochemicals from Indian medicinal plants.

Cholera is a severe diarrheal disease caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with pathogenic Vibrio cholerae. Treatment for cholera includes rehydration therapy and antibiotics to avert death and reduce bacterial burden to prevent rapid transmission of the disease. In addition, in Indian subcontinent, there is historical evidence of using plants for treating cholera. This study was designed to investigate the cholera toxin-inhibitory properties of phytochemicals sourced from Indian medicinal plants. For this, three reported genotypes of cholera toxin subunit B (ctxB) associated with

Efficacy of medicinal plants and their derived biomolecules against Plasmodium falciparum.

Many apicomplexan pathogens pose significant threats to humans and domestic animals, with the lack of effective drugs and drug resistance representing major challenges in disease management. To address this, the search for new and potent antimalarial drugs is crucial. Plant-based formulations offer a promising alternative for such drug development. Here, we evaluated the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of nine plant extracts, traditionally used to treat fever-like symptoms in Bangladesh. We assessed the antimalarial activity of plant extracts by using the Plasmodium falciparum 3D7 growth inhi

Antioxidant Potential of Medicinal Plants in the Treatment of Scabies Infestation.

Oxidative stress, characterized by an overproduction of reactive oxygen species that overwhelm the body's physiological defense mechanisms, is a key factor in the progression of parasitic diseases in both humans and animals. Scabies, a highly contagious dermatological condition caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, affects millions globally, particularly in developing regions. The infestation leads to severe itching and skin rashes, triggered by allergic reactions to the mites, their eggs, and feces. Conventional scabies treatments typically involve the use of scabicidal agents, w

Phenolic Compounds of the Medicinal Plants in an Anthropogenically Transformed Environment.

In this article, the impact of an anthropogenically transformed environment on the content of pharmaceutically valuable biologically active compounds in medicinal plants is analyzed. The studied biologically active substances included phenolic compounds (flavonoids, anthocyanins, tannins, and phenolic acids). The number of transmissible forms of heavy metals (HMs), including cadmium, lead, and mercury, were discharged from factories that are present in the soil. Plants uptake these toxic metals from the soil. HM causes changes in the activity of the several enzymes such as phenylalanine ammoni

Anti-plasmodial, Cytotoxic and Antioxidant Activities of Selected Ghanaian Medicinal Plants.

Malaria affects about half of the world's population. The sub-Saharan African region is the most affected. Plant natural products have been a major source of antimalarial drugs; the first (quinine) and present (artemisinin) antimalarials are of natural product origin. Some secondary metabolites demonstrate adjuvant antioxidant effects and selective activity. The focus of this study was to investigate the anti-plasmodial activity, cytotoxicities and antioxidant properties of eight (8) Ghanaian medicinal plants. The anti-plasmodial activity was determined using the SYBR green assay and the tetra
