BACKGROUND: Plasmapheresis represent an alternative therapeutic option for hyperthyroidism with thyroid storm or refractory cases. It provides a rapid decrease in plasma thyroid hormones and anti-thyroid antibodies. The standard treatment of complicated thyrotoxicosis and thyroid storm with the concomitant use of antithyroid medication, iodine, beta-blockers, and corticosteroids is successful in most cases. BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disorder associated with a hypercoagulable state and increased risk of intraoperative and postoperative thrombosis. Few neurosurgical studies have examined the management of these patients, though the standard of care in most other disciplines involves the use of anticoagulation therapy. BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a disease with autoimmune background. Impaired neuromuscular transmission is caused by blockage of acetylcholine receptors on postsynaptic membrane by circulating specific antibodies. Recognition of myasthenia gravis in children, especially its ocular type, may be difficult due to occurrence of similar clinical symptoms in other diseases like ecephalomyopathies. MG is characterized by variety of clinical symptoms and their alternations during excercise and rest.

Eighty-four patients with different stages of respiratory sarcoidosis (RS) were examined. Plasmapheresis was performed during pathogenetic and symptomatic therapy. A comparative analysis was made in the patients from a control group who had no plasmapheresis sessions. The findings have indicated that it is expedient to use plasmapheresis at all stages of active respiratory sarcoidosis. AIM: To evaluate tolerance to isosorbide dinitrate (ID) in patients with angina pectoris functional class II-III and effect of plasmapheresis in this tolerance management.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 85 patients with angina pectoris functional class II-III taking long-acting ID.
RESULTS: As shown by repeat transesophageal left atrial pacing, 24.7% patients have developed tolerance to nitrate while taking prolonged ID. Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is an ulcerative skin disorder of unknown aetiology. We describe a 40-year-old woman with long-standing PG and who did not respond to the usual treatments; however, she was treated successfully with plasmapheresis followed by pulse intravenous cyclophospamide therapy.

Drug-induced toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a rare but frequently lethal disease of the skin and mucosa of unknown etiology. Toxic metabolic and immunologic products in the serum have been discussed as possible causes. For this reason we have performed plasmapheresis on these patients for many years.
