BACKGROUND: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare disease characterized by multiple gas-filled cysts in the intestinal wall and is associated with various comorbidities. We report herein a case of intractable paralytic ileus caused by primary PCI.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old man visited out hospital complaining of abdominal pain and vomiting. He had been hospitalized twice for intestinal obstruction in the past 2 months. Based on his history of appendectomy, mechanical bowel obstruction caused by adhesion was diagnosed, and the patient underwent surgery. However, laparotomy

A 47-year-old man underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for malignant lymphoma. He developed acute skin graft versus host disease(GVHD)and pneumomycosis which were treated with steroids. One hundred and fifteen days later, the patient had a diagnosis of free gas images in the abdominal cavity and streakly air collections in the bowel wall from the ascending colon to the sigmoid colon in the CT scan. He was asymptomatic and his physical examination was unrevealing. We diagnosed his condition as pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis(PCI). He was managed conservatively with the high conc

OBJECTIVES: Acute abdominal symptoms with CT scan evidence of intramural gas in bowel walls (pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis, PCI) and of gas in the portal venous blood (PBG) in patients undergoing chemotherapy may represent a worrisome picture, suggestive of bowel necrosis. This picture remains a major clinical clue and the reporting of new cases may help to share awareness and experience on management. We describe a patient with acute abdominal symptoms and evidence of PCI with PBG under cetuximab, oxaliplatin, tegafur-uracil and folinic acid chemotherapy for metastatic adenocarcinoma of

INTRODUCTION: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is characterized by the presence of multiple gas-filled cysts in the intestinal wall, the submucosa and/or subserosa of the intestine. The term pneumatosis cystoides coli is synonymous with pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis when the disorder is limited to the colon. It is a secondary finding caused by a wide variety of underlying gastrointestinal or extragastrointestinal diseases but rarely occurs in the course of treatment with an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor. This is the first report of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis after 12 years of trea

RATIONALE: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare disease characterized by gas accumulation in the intestinal wall, and is usually treated conservatively. Patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) sometimes present with severe abdominal pain as the first symptom, which may be misdiagnosed. We report a case of PCI in a patient with diabetes mellitus (DM) misdiagnosed as gastrointestinal perforation and underwent exploratory laparotomy.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 41-year-old woman with a history of DM treated with miglitol, an α-glucosidase inhibitors (αGI), was admitted to the emergency d

Graft versus host disease is a serious complication of allogenic stem cell transplants and can manifest with gastrointestinal complications including pneumatosis cystoides intestinali (PCI). A 43-year-old male with a history of acute myeloid leukemia presented to the hospital with abdominal pain and sepsis. The patient was intubated and admitted to the ICU. His CT scan demonstrated extensive colonic pneumatosis. He was high risk for laparotomy so was treated non-operatively. He improved and his abdominal exam remained benign. With aggressive resuscitation, close monitoring, and antibiotics, th

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is an uncommon disorder usually associated with intestinal and pulmonary obstructive diseases, recent abdominal procedures and systemic illnesses. PCI has been reported in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus associated with intestinal vasculitis. We describe herein a patient with a month history of intermittent abdominal pain, diarrhoea, hyporexia, and weight loss who underwent intestinal resection for acute abdomen. Post-operatively she gave a three-month history of arthritis of the right knee, ankles and feet, arthralgia of the wrists, MCPs and

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a relatively rare, benign condition characterized by multiple subserosal or submucosal gas-filled cysts in the bowel wall. The cause and incidence of PCI are uncertain, but the condition is most commonly diagnosed in patients who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, gastrointestinal disease (e.g. Crohn's disease, peptic ulcer disease) or collagen disease (e.g. scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematosus). The report of PCI associated with nephrotic syndrome has not be known as far as we have referred. We first experienced a case of PCI with neph

Intestinal pseudoobstruction and pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis are uncommon complications of progressive systemic sclerosis. We report a 26-year-old woman with this disorder who responded poorly to conventional treatment. Subcutaneous administration of octreotide, a long-acting somatostatin analogue, at a dose of 50 micrograms/day for 3 weeks, relieved symptoms such as nausea and bloating. There was also a marked decrease of intestinal gas accumulation, as documented on X-ray films.

Three patients with pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis had been reported. All patients are females with lesions in the left and sigmoid colon, grouped as idiopathic etiology. Two patients are in middle age, workers in the manufacturing plant for electric apparatus. One patient received surgical resection of the affected segment. After oral antibiotics treatment, one patient was resected only the intensely affected segment, so that many cysts were still remained, but they disappeared after 3 weeks. One patient was treated with lactobacillus preparations and lactulose. Her subjective symptoms an

We report an unusually severe case of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in an adult female patient undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoblastic crisis in chronic myelogenous leukemia. An impressive accumulation of gas was not only detected within the intestinal wall and mesentery but also in the peritoneum, retroperitoneum, mediastinum and cervical subcutaneous tissue. The patient was almost asymptomatic and fully recovered within a few days of treatment. In addition to chemotherapy, the patient was receiving trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole for pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and lactulose for cons

INTRODUCTION: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare condition characterized by the presence of intramural gas cysts within the intestines. We report a case in which PCI with pneumoperitoneum was incidentally discovered following trauma, revealing an underlying stenosing pyloro-duodenal ulcer.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old man was admitted after a road traffic accident. Computed tomography revealed significant pneumoperitoneum without signs of organ injury. Emergency laparotomy showed extensive PCI involving the small bowel, without any perforation. Postoperative esophagogastro

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare condition characterized by air accumulation within the subserosa or submucosa of the gastrointestinal wall. We herein report a case involving a woman in her early 30s who developed PCI after undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The patient had a history of multiple COVID-19 infections. Imaging revealed extensive pneumoperitoneum and mesenteric emphysema; nevertheless, the patient remained clinically stable with a benign abdominal examination. She eventually recovered after 1 mon

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is an uncommon condition characterized by gas filled cysts within the bowel wall. We present a case of a 40-year old male who complained of abdominal pain and distension. The clinical diagnosis was intestinal obstruction and intraoperative impression was intestinal lymphangioma. The resected segment of the bowel showed multiple thin walled, tense, air-filled cysts on the serosal surface, which collapsed with a popping sound when pricked. The histologic diagnosis was pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis has varied clinical man

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare condition characterized by gas-filled cysts within the gastrointestinal wall, often discovered incidentally or presenting with abdominal pain and pneumoperitoneum. Pneumobilia following blunt trauma is an even rarer finding, typically associated with increased intra-abdominal pressure. We report the case of a 46-year-old male with no significant medical history who sustained a 5-meter fall. The CT scan revealed pneumobilia, pneumoperitoneum, and areas of pneumatosis intestinalis in the small intestine, suggesting PCI with cyst rupture and retr

BACKGROUND: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare condition characterized by the presence of multiple gas-filled cysts located beneath the intestinal submucosa or plasma membrane. The pathogenesis of PCI remains incompletely understood, and its clinical presentation lacks specificity.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 69-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of abdominal distension, abdominal pain lasting over 2 weeks, and altered consciousness for 3 days. She had a two-year history of mixed connective tissue disease and was undergoing regular hormone therapy. Upon admissio

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare condition characterized by the presence of air collection within the subserosa and/or submucosa of the gastrointestinal wall. Due to the lack of specific symptoms, PCI is likely to be misdiagnosed or missed without the use of imaging techniques or gastrointestinal endoscopy. Here, we report a patient who complained of abdominal distention and constipation after chemotherapy for hematological malignancies, and was diagnosed with secondary PCI via computed tomography (CT) and exploratory laparotomy. Pneumoperitoneum was no longer observed after
