Genotoxicity mode of action exploration of polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) acetic acid migration solution under repeated-dose exposure in rats.

As a commonly used material that contacts food, polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) may interact with food, and since certain components can migrate, this has become a food safety concern. This study aims to investigate the genotoxicity of PET acetic acid migration solution and its toxic mode of action using an in vivo multi-endpoint genotoxicity evaluation system and quantitative liver proteomics analysis. Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into eight groups: the PET acetic acid migration solution group, the acetic acid group, the phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) co

Support of the aortic wall: a histological study in sheep comparing a macroporous mesh with low-porosity vascular graft of the same polyethylene terephthalate material.

OBJECTIVES: Wrapping with various materials was an early treatment for aortic aneurysms. Wrapping with low-porosity vascular grafts has been associated with graft migration and vascular erosion. An alternative is to use a macroporous mesh (MPM) made of the same polymer (polyethylene terephalate). We compared the histological outcome 1 year after wrapping sheep aortas with low-porosity grafts versus MPM fabrics. METHODS: The 2 different fabrics were wrapped around the aorta of 3 sheep. After 1 year the aortas were excised. The 2 wrapped segments of aorta were compared with each other and contr

Polyethylene terephthalate nanoplastics promote gastric cancer progression by inhibiting the TNF-α/JAK1/STAT1 signaling pathway and shaping an immunosuppressive microenvironment.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), one of the most widely produced plastics used in food packaging, has emerged as a pervasive source of microplastic exposure in humans, with recent evidence confirming its presence in the human stomach. However, the biological consequences of PET nanoplastics (PET-NPs) on gastric carcinogenesis remain largely unexplored. In this study, we systematically investigated the effects of PET-NPs on gastric cancer progression and the underlying molecular and immunological mechanisms. PET-NPs were readily internalized by gastric cancer cells, leading to enhanced cell pr

Differential sensitivity of Lemna minor and Moina macrocopa to polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastic fibers: hazard characterization and scenario-based risk assessment.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microfibers present a common contaminant in freshwater environments, yet their toxicological sensitivity across distinct trophic levels remains poorly studied. This study assessed the comparative toxicity of PET microplastic fibers on the duckweed Lemna minor and the cladoceran Moina macrocopa. Healthy L. minor fronds were exposed to several PET fiber concentrations for seven days, and the frond number, frond area, root length, and chlorophyll a and b contents were determined. For M. macrocopa, an acute immobilization test was performed for 48 h, and the surviv

Non-Cement-Based Soil Stabilization Material: A Review of Biochar, Nanocellulose, and Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Powder Composite for Sustainable Geotechnics.

Soil stabilizers using conventional cement and lime binders incur high environmental costs owing to CO2 emissions associated with their excavation, production, and processing. This has motivated research on low-carbon, waste-derived alternatives. The review shows that: biochar increases unconfined compressive strength (UCS) by 15-40% with a 2-5% dosage through pore filling and particle binding; nanocellulose promotes soil cohesion by 25-60% through fibrous network development and tensile bridging; recycled PET powder at 5-10% increases shear strength by 20-35% promoting mechanical interlocking

Balancing surface chemistry and biocompatibility: an analysis of poly(dimethylsiloxane) and polyethylene terephthalate membrane bonding methods in Lab-on-a-Chip systems for cell culture.

Next to the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is the material increasingly used in the fabrication of Lab-on-a-Chip (LoC) systems. It results from their excellent biocompatibility and straightforward fabrication of microstructures. The integration of PDMS and PET requires chemical modification of surfaces, such as the use of silane-based coupling agents (3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS). However, this method is often ineffective in achieving stable, leak-proof bonding, with the potential for high cytotoxicity. In

Emerging investigator series: unpacking PET: comparative analysis of leachable and extractable contaminants from virgin and recycled polyethylene terephthalate bottles and textiles.

Plastics, particularly polyethylene terephthalate (PET), are widely used as food contact materials, textiles, and toys. However, their widespread use and potential for human exposure raise environmental and health concerns, particularly regarding the leaching of chemical additives. This study assessed hazardous plastic additives and non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) leached from paired virgin and recycled PET bottles (soda and water) purchased from Michigan and California and from textiles (toys, pillows, and clothing) acquired online or in stores in Michigan and Oregon. Results showed

Cellular uptake, Transport, and Inflammatory Responses of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Nanoplastics in In Vitro Caco-2 Monoculture/Mucus Model.

Human exposure to nanoplastics (NPls) has raised increasing concern due to their potential health impacts. Our recent work suggested that the polymer type may influence NPl uptake and inflammatory responses in differentiated Caco-2-based intestinal models. In this study, iDye-pink-labeled polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 120nm) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC, 94nm) NPls were evaluated using differentiated Caco-2 and Caco-2/HT29-MTX mucus models at a concentration exceeding estimated real-life levels. Neither PET nor PVC NPls induced acute loss of cell viability or disruption of barrier integrity.

Exposure to Polyethylene Terephthalate Microplastic Induces Mouse Liver Fibrosis Through Oxidative Stress and p38 MAPK/p65 NF-κB Signaling Pathway.

Microplastic (MP) pollution has garnered attention due to its potential impact on living organisms. Among these, polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET-MPs) are frequently detected in both environmental samples and human tissues. Despite this, the effects of PET-MPs on liver damage and fibrosis in mammals remain insufficiently understood. This study demonstrated that oral exposure to PET-MPs at doses of 1 mg/day (with a diameter of 1 μm) over 42 days resulted in inhibited weight gain and altered organ coefficients in male mice, suggesting possible liver damage. Using HE and Masson stain

Gel-dispersed micro- and nano- polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) impact metabolic parameters in egg-box liver spheroid model.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) represent an emerging class of contaminants, yet their biological impacts remain poorly understood. Mechanistic research comparing polymers such as polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is challenging because of strong differences in hydrophobicity, buoyancy or sedimentation behavior, size distribution (aggregation) and lack of strong acute cytotoxic effects. This study introduces an innovative in vitro dosing platform with 3D hepatic spheroids, providing a dosimetrically robust model to investigate metabolic and bioenergetic effects of chronic
