[Recurrent periods of respiratory tract infections in a 22-year-old].

A 22-year-old male with recurrent periods of coughing and nasal discharge was unable to work and cooperate. A bronchoscopy revealed high amounts of leucocytes and no eosinofils, acute inflammation and > 105/ml Streptococcus pneumoniae susceptible to penicillin. The symptoms relapsed after penicillin and at the age of 24 the patient was CT-scanned which revealed bilateral sinusitis, mastoiditis and bronchiectasis. Treatment with azithromycin and a weight loss programme (from 156 kg) improved the health of the patient, who was an orangutan. This highlights the benefit of cooperation between medi

Naturally acquired visceral leishmaniosis in a captive white-naped mangabey (Cercocebus lunulatus) in Spain.

Leishmania infantum infection has recently been identified in non-human primates in Spain, including clinically affected individuals from critically endangered species such as the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus). Despite these emerging cases, clinicopathological data on leishmaniosis in captive wildlife remain limited. Here, we report the first confirmed case of clinical visceral leishmaniosis in a zoo-captive white-naped mangabey (Cercocebus lunulatus) in Spain. The affected animal presented with progressive weight loss, generalized lymphadenopathy, polyclonal gammopathy, and cyto

Brief communication: Contributions of enamel-dentine junction shape and enamel deposition to primate molar crown complexity.

Molar crown morphology varies among primates from relatively simple in some taxa to more complex in others, with such variability having both functional and taxonomic significance. In addition to the primary cusps, crown surface complexity derives from the presence of crests, cuspules, and crenulations. Developmentally, this complexity results from the deposition of an enamel cap over a basement membrane (the morphology of which is preserved as the enamel-dentine junction, or EDJ, in fully formed teeth). However, the relative contribution of the enamel cap and the EDJ to molar crown complexity

Planum parietale of chimpanzees and orangutans: a comparative resonance of human-like planum temporale asymmetry.

We have previously demonstrated that leftward asymmetry of the planum temporale (PT), a brain language area, was not unique to humans since a similar condition is present in great apes. Here we report on a related area in great apes, the planum parietale (PP). PP in humans has a rightward asymmetry with no correlation to the L>R PT, which indicates functional independence. The roles of the PT in human language are well known while PP is implicated in dyslexia and communication disorders. Since posterior bifurcation of the sylvian fissure (SF) is unique to humans and great apes, we used it to d

Allometry and prediction in hominoids: a solution to the problem of intervening variables.

To avoid misinterpretation of allometric exponents determined from interspecific allometric comparisons, specific conditions must be met with respect to the common reference variable. Body weight is considered to be the best general indication of overall size and is hence widely acknowledged to be the most suitable reference variable. However, because of the paucity of recorded body weights for museum specimens, various comparative studies have used other size indicators as intervening variables, although the allometric relationships to body size/weight were often unknown and possibly differed

Three-dimensional geometric morphometric analysis of the nasopharyngeal boundaries and its functional integration with the face and external basicranium among extant hominoids.

The nasopharynx is a centrally located but understudied upper respiratory tract component. This study tested hypotheses related to the functional integration of the nasopharyngeal boundaries with the facial skeleton and external basicranium over the course of development in humans and nonhuman hominoids. It was hypothesized that facial morphology (width, length, and kyphosis) is related to nasopharyngeal width and choanal morphology, whereas relative external basicranial proportions are related to nasopharyngeal depth. Human infants were used as models of extreme orthognathy and external basic

Molecular sex determination in primates including non-invasive umbilical cord samples from neonates of three endangered species.

BACKGROUND: Molecular sex determination is a valuable tool for an effective population management in captive bred endangered species. The molecular approaches are particularly valuable in species with limited sexual dimorphism. Moreover, the utilization of accessible non-invasive samples from newborn animals enables early sex determination beneficial for the animal population management and planning. METHODS AND RESULTS: A rapid molecular sex determination method using PCR with specific primers targeting the male-specific SRY locus and the control c-myc gene present in both sexes was develope

Dental development and life history in living African and Asian apes.

Life-history inference is an important aim of paleoprimatology, but life histories cannot be discerned directly from the fossil record. Among extant primates, the timing of many life-history attributes is correlated with the age at emergence of the first permanent molar (M1), which can therefore serve as a means to directly compare the life histories of fossil and extant species. To date, M1 emergence ages exist for only a small fraction of extant primate species and consist primarily of data from captive individuals, which may show accelerated dental eruption compared with free-living individ

Functional morphology of the first cervical vertebra in humans and nonhuman primates.

The cervical vertebral column bears or balances the weight of the head supported by the nuchal muscles that partly originate from the cervical vertebrae. The position of the head relative to the vertebral column, and consequently locomotion and posture behavior, could thus be associated with the form of the cervical vertebrae. In spite of this assumption and some empirical indications along these lines, primate vertebral morphologies have been reported to be very similar and not clearly related to locomotion. We therefore study the relationship between the morphology of the first cervical vert

Bipedalism or bipedalisms: The os coxae of StW 573.

There has been a long debate about the possibility of multiple contemporaneous species of Australopithecus in both eastern and southern Africa, potentially exhibiting different forms of bipedal locomotion. Here, we describe the previously unreported morphology of the os coxae in the 3.67 Ma Australopithecus prometheus StW 573 from Sterkfontein Member 2, comparing it with variation in ossa coxae in living humans and apes as well as other Plio-Pleistocene hominins. Statistical comparisons indicate that StW 573 and 431 resemble humans in their anteroposteriorly great iliac crest breadth compared

Functional and developmental influences on intraspecific variation in catarrhine vertebrae.

OBJECTIVES: We tested whether patterns of intraspecific variation in catarrhine vertebral shape are consistent with developmental or functional predictions. Intraspecific variation was compared across column regions, morphological features, and species. Transitional regions and later ossifying morphological features were predicted to exhibit increased variation. The lumbosacral region, biomechanically important morphological features, and species with high locomotor demand and/or dedicated pronogrady were predicted to exhibit decreased variation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used a modified Leve

Subnasoalveolar anatomy and hominoid phylogeny: evidence from comparative ontogeny.

The present analysis evaluated extant hominoid subnasal morphological variation from an ontogenetic perspective, documenting both qualitative and allometric details of subnasal maturation in Hylobates, great apes and modern humans. With respect to intraspecific variation, results of log-linear modeling procedures indicate that qualitative features of the subnasal region shown previously to discriminate extant taxa (Ward and Kimbel, 1983; McCollum et al., 1993) do not vary appreciably with either age or sex. In terms of quantitative variation, aside from observed changes in the position of the

Scoliosis in an Orangutan.

STUDY DESIGN: The first case of scoliosis in an Orangutan spine is reported. OBJECTIVES: To study the nature of scoliosis in the spinal specimen, and to determine the etiologic significance to human idiopathic scoliosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Idiopathic scoliosis has not been observed in primates other than man. Previous studies highlighted the importance of erect posture in the development of idiopathic scoliosis in man. METHODS: A spinal model of an orangutan spine was studied in great detail to determine its nature. The methods used included plain radiographs, computed tomography s

Prevalence and phylogenetic analysis of hepatitis B virus among nonhuman primates in Taiwan.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a public health problem worldwide, and apart from infecting humans, HBV has been found in nonhuman primates. This study investigated the prevalence and phylogenetic analysis of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) among nonhuman primates in Taiwan, an area where human HBV remains endemic. Serum samples from 286 captive nonhuman primates (i.e., 32 great apes [Pan troglodytes and Pongo pygmaeus], 42 gibbons [Hylobates sp. and Nomascus sp.], and 212 Cercopithecidae monkeys) were collected and tested for the presence of HBV- and HDV-specific serologic mark

Planum Temporale Asymmetries in Primates: A Comparative Study in Great Apes and Monkeys.

OBJECTIVES: Most human brains exhibit left hemisphere asymmetry for planum temporale (PT) surface area and gray matter volume, which is interpreted as cerebral lateralization for language. Once considered a uniquely human feature, PT asymmetries have now been documented in chimpanzees and olive baboons. The goal of the current study was to further investigate the evolution of PT asymmetries in nonhuman primates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We measured PT surface area in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes, n = 90), bonobos (Pan paniscus, n = 21), gorillas (Gorilla gorilla, n = 34), orangutans (Pongo spp.

An overview of nutritional factors in the aetiopathogenesis of myocardial fibrosis in great apes.

The main cause of mortality in great apes in zoological settings is cardiovascular disease (CVD), affecting all four taxa: chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), bonobo (Pan paniscus), gorilla (Gorilla spp.) and orangutan (Pongo spp.). Myocardial fibrosis, the most typical histological characterisation of CVD in great apes, is non-specific, making it challenging to understand the aetiopathogenesis. A multifactorial origin of disease is assumed whereby many potential causative factors are directly or indirectly related to the diet, which in wild-living great apes mainly consists of high-fibre, low-carbo

Bayesian inference reveals ancient origin of simian foamy virus in orangutans.

Simian foamy viruses (SFVs) infect most nonhuman primate species and appears to co-evolve with its hosts. This co-evolutionary signal is particularly strong among great apes, including orangutans (genus Pongo). Previous studies have identified three distinct orangutan SFV clades. The first of these three clades is composed of SFV from P. abelii from Sumatra, the second consists of SFV from P. pygmaeus from Borneo, while the third clade is mixed, comprising an SFV strain found in both species of orangutan. The existence of the mixed clade has been attributed to an expansion of P. pygmaeus into

Ascariasis: host-pathogen biology.

Ascaris lumbricoides is one of the most common intestinal parasites in humans. Daily global contamination of the soil by A. lumbricoides eggs is enormous (approximately 9 x 10(14) eggs/day). Physical factors, particularly temperature and moisture, are critical in determining the maturation of eggs to the infective stage and their survival. Transmission of the infection to humans, on the other hand, depends more on various socioeconomic factors. In theory, ascariasis is preventable; it is indeed on the way to disappearing completely in developed societies where there is a high standard of sanit

A new distal fibular fragment of Homo floresiensis and the first quantitative comparative analysis of proximal and distal fibular morphology in this species.

The hindlimb skeleton of the holotype (LB1) of Homo floresiensis is relatively complete and includes both fibulae, which despite being well preserved have yet to be subject to a quantitative comparative analysis with other hominids. A new distal fragment of a fibula has also been recovered from the H. floresiensis-bearing sediments at Liang Bua (Flores, Indonesia). In this study, we used 3D geometric morphometrics (3DGM) to quantify detailed aspects of the external shape and articular facet morphology of the proximal and distal ends of these H. floresiensis fibulae. The comparative sample incl

Onchocerciasis in southwestern Sudan: parasitological and clinical characteristics.

Parasitological and clinical observations were made on residents of Pongo Nuer, a village in the province of Bahr El Ghazal, southwestern Sudan. Of 202 skin biopsies, 189 (94%) were positive for microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus. Nodules were most common around the pelvic girdle and rare on the limbs or head. Microfilarial intensities, ranging up to 1,094 mf/mg of skin, were highest at the iliac crest and shoulder; they increased rapidly in childhood but then appeared to reach a plateau maintained through adult life. Nodule presence and number, especially at multiple sites, was significantl
