Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important opportunistic pathogen in recreational waters and the primary cause of hot tub folliculitis and otitis externa. The aim of this surveillance study was to determine the background prevalence and antimicrobial resistance profile of P. aeruginosa in swimming pools and hot tubs. A convenience sample of 108 samples was obtained from three hot tubs and eight indoor swimming pools. Water and swab samples were processed using membrane filtration, followed by confirmation with polymerase chain reaction. Twenty-three samples (21%) were positive for P. aeruginosa, a

BACKGROUND: Screening for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) at genital and extragenital sites is needed for most key populations, but molecular diagnostic tests for CT/NG are costly. We aimed to determine the accuracy of pooled samples from multiple anatomic sites from one individual to detect CT/NG using the testing of a single sample from one anatomic site as the reference.
METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched five databases for articles published from January 1, 2000, to February 4, 2021. Studies were included if they contained original

OBJECTIVE: Self-collection methods are regarded as a strategy to promote human papillomavirus (HPV) testing for cervical cancer screening. HPV testing using urine specimens is non-invasive and could eliminate barriers such as embarrassment and discomfort. However, concerns regarding the accuracy of this method persist. Hence, the current meta-analysis aims to verify the accuracy of urine HPV nucleic acid amplification testing.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases to identify studies that evaluated the performance of urine HPV nucl

Group testing protocols physically combine biomaterial from multiple individuals into a single 'pooled' specimen, which is then tested for markers of infection. Group testing offers a cost-effective approach for surveillance of low-prevalence infections because it greatly reduces the number of tests required relative to individual testing protocols. However, group testing poses challenges for detecting spatial clusters of disease because only pooled test results are observed. This article introduces a spatial scan statistic tailored to group testing data with variable pool sizes, using a likel

Screening for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae at the pharyngeal, urogenital, and anorectal sites is recommended for men who have sex with men (MSM). Combining the three individual-site samples into a single pooled sample could result in significant cost savings, provided there is no significant sensitivity reduction. The aim of this study was to examine the sensitivity of pooled samples for detecting chlamydia and gonorrhea in asymptomatic MSM using a nucleic acid amplification test. Asymptomatic MSM who tested positive for chlamydia or gonorrhoea were invited to participate. P

BACKGROUND: Building on our previous work showing that pooled urine testing can rapidly detect Schistosoma haematobium infections but has limited sensitivity in low-intensity settings or with large pool sizes, this study evaluated how urine volume, pool size, infection intensity, and diagnostic method affect the detection and quantification of S. haematobium eggs in pooled samples.
METHODS: Between July 2022 and April 2023, 2,134 urine samples from school-age children living in three regional states of Ethiopia were individually examined by deploying urine filtration microscopy (UFM). Subsequ

The sensitivity of Xpert MTB/RIF (Xpert) pooled testing is limited for diagnosing patients with paucibacillary tuberculosis (TB). We assessed whether pooled testing with Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Ultra) can be a sensitive and effective approach for mass TB screening. Conserved, frozen sputum samples, previously confirmed as positive or negative for Mycobacterium tuberculosis by individual Xpert assays, were mixed in pools of 4, 8, and 16 and then tested using Ultra. Each pool contained a single positive sample with varying mycobacterial loads. We then simulated TB screening at prevalence ranges of

The detection of West Nile virus (WNV) in mosquitoes by real-time RT-PCR provides valuable information on the epidemiology of the virus and identifies mosquito species that are potential vectors. Testing sets of pooled mosquitoes of the same species is logistically the easiest and most cost-effective approach for WNV testing; however, little information is available on how the results of small pooled sets relate to those of testing individual mosquitoes. During the 2002 outbreak, we compared pooled and individual samples of two mosquito species (Culex pipiens and Culex restuans) collected from

BACKGROUND: Interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) are widely used for detecting latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). However, these tests can yield indeterminate results, posing challenges for clinical management. The management of these indeterminate outcomes varies, creating uncertainty in clinical practice. This study systematically evaluates the effectiveness of repeat IGRA testing versus additional tuberculin skin testing (TST) in resolving indeterminate IGRA results during LTBI screening.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, searching PubMed, Embase, Web of Sc

OBJECTIVES: The contribution of acute HIV infection (AHI) to transmission is widely recognized, and increasing AHI diagnosis capacity can enhance HIV prevention through subsequent behavior change or intervention. We examined the impact of targeted pooled nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) and social marketing to increase AHI diagnosis among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Vancouver.
DESIGN: Observational study.
METHODS: We implemented pooled NAAT following negative third-generation enzyme immunoassay (EIA) testing for males above 18 years in six clinics accessed by MSM, accompanied

The identification of a case of respiratory tuberculosis in a swimming-baths attendant whose sputum was smear positive was followed by intensive contact tracing of children aged 8-11 years who had visited the baths. An outbreak was discovered that otherwise might not have been detected. Out of 3764 children, 108 (2.9%) had evidence of infection: there were 16 cases of tuberculosis, of which 11 were symptomless but showed lesions on chest radiography, and a further 92 with tine test grade 3 or 4 without clinical or radiological signs. The contact of these children with the index case was appare

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Detecting hepatitis C virus (HCV) reinfection among key populations helps prevent ongoing transmission. This systematic review aims to determine the association between different testing intervals during post-SVR follow-up on the detection of HCV reinfection among highest risk populations.
METHODS: We searched electronic databases between January 2014 and February 2023 for studies that tested individuals at risk for HCV reinfection at discrete testing intervals and reported HCV reinfection incidence among key populations. Pooled estimates of reinfection incidence were calcu

This study describes the relationship between physical activity and intake of trihalomethanes (THMs), namely chloroform (CHCl3), bromodichloromethane (CHCl2Br), dibromochloromethane (CHClBr2) and bromoform (CHBr3), in individuals exposed in two indoor swimming pools which used different disinfection agents, chlorine (Cl-SP) and bromine (Br-SP). CHCl3 and CHBr3 were the dominant compounds in air and water of the Cl-SP and Br-SP, respectively. Physical exercise was assessed from distance swum and energy expenditure. The changes in exhaled breath concentrations of these compounds were measured fr

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used on pooled serum and milk samples to determine whether hypodermosis could be detected where a larger sero-epidemiological survey was required. This study was undertaken to assess the potential of this assay for testing sera on milk samples, pooled from 10 cows, and determining the period of the year when detection was optimal. The sensitivity of the assay was determined by increasingly diluting a positive serum with pooled negative sera, from 1:10 to 1:100. The diagnostic lower limit of the assay requires at least two serological reactors wi

BACKGROUND: Household contact investigation for tuberculosis is limited by reliance on clinic-based testing and sputum-dependent diagnostics. To inform household-level screening strategies, we estimated the diagnostic accuracy of in-home molecular testing using tongue swabs compared with sputum, and quantified linkage to care among household contacts with confirmed tuberculosis.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study at 26 government health clinics in South Africa. We recruited index patients with drug-sensitive pulmonary tuberculosis and their household contacts. Participants aged

BACKGROUND: Despite efforts made to reduce the spread of the human immune-deficiency virus (HIV), its testing coverage remains low in low and middle-income countries (LMIC). Besides, information on factors associated with HIV counseling and testing among reproductive-age women is not sufficiently available. Therefore, this study was aimed to determine the pooled prevalence and factors associated with HIV testing among reproductive-age women in eastern Africa.
METHODS: Secondary data analysis was conducted based on the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) data conducted in East African countri

BACKGROUND: The Hologic Aptima™ TMA SARS-CoV-2 assay was employed to test pooled nasopharyngeal (NP) samples to evaluate the performance of pooled sample testing and characterize variables influencing results.
METHODS: Results on 1033 previously tested NP samples were retrieved to characterize the relative light units (RLU) of SARS-CoV-2-positive samples in the tested population. The pooling strategy of combining 10 SARS-CoV-2 samples into one pool (10/1) was used in this study. The results were compared with neat sample testing using the same Aptima™ TMA SARS-CoV-2 assay and also the CDC RT-

BACKGROUND: Early confirmation of urogenital tuberculosis (UGTB) remains challenging in routine practice because conventional culture is slow and has variable sensitivity. Urine-based molecular testing has emerged as a rapid alternative, but its performance estimates vary across studies. This systematic review evaluated the diagnostic value of urine-based molecular testing, including Xpert Mycobacterium tuberculosis/rifampicin, multiplex polymerase chain reaction and loop-mediated isothermal amplification, for UGTB.
METHODS: Risk of bias was assessed using Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Acc
