Onychomycosis in special populations.

Onychomycosis, a common fungal nail infection, can present unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in special populations including the elderly, children, individuals with diabetes, immunocompromised patients, and those with compromised organ function or psoriasis. These groups face increased susceptibility due to factors such as impaired immunity, vascular insufficiency, comorbidities, and altered nail morphology. Despite its often-benign perception, untreated onychomycosis in these populations can lead to complications, including secondary infection, ulceration, and systemic spread. Acc

Dysphagia in the Aging Population.

Older adults are projected to outnumber children aged under 18 years for the first time in United States history by 2034, according to Census Bureau projections. This will lead to significant increase in age-related disorders. One of the most important disorders that will increase in prevalence is dysphagia, as it leads to malnutrition, dehydration, aspiration pneumonia, and death. In this article, the physiology of dysphagia in the elderly, as well as the management options is discussed.

[The mortality of children population].

The article presents comprehensive medical statistical analysis of indicators and causes of mortality of children population of the Russian Federation in 2017-2021. It is emphasized that in Russia, in conditions of extremely unfavorable demographic situation, the hyper actual task is to preserve life of every child. It is demonstrated that crucial role in mortality of children population is played by not only infant mortality and mortality of children aged 1-4 years, but also by mortality of children of older ages. The children population mortality still keeps gender and residence differences.

Anaphylaxis in Risky Populations.

Anaphylaxis should be clinically diagnosed with immediate recognition, whereas, despite advances in the field of allergy, the symptoms of anaphylaxis remain to be under-recognized, diagnosis is often missed, and treatment is often delayed. Anaphylaxis presents with symptoms in a spectrum of severity, ranging from mild objective breathing problems to circulatory shock and/or collapse. Indeed, anaphylaxis management frequently relies on a 'one-size-fits-all approach' rather than a precision medicine care model, despite the evidence that anaphylaxis is a heterogeneous condition with differences i

Psoriasis in the transplant population.

Solid organ and stem cell transplants are increasingly common, and dermatologists will more frequently encounter and need to manage common skin diseases, such as psoriasis, in transplant patients. This review explores psoriasis remission and occurrence in recipients of solid organ and stem cell transplants. Hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cell transplants may show potential for treating psoriasis in patients with leukemia or who have other medical conditions requiring stem cell transplant. The effects of solid organ transplant are less clear, partly due to limitations in the breadth of the

Special Circumstances and Populations.

Venous thromboembolism is a condition that includes both deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Venous thromboembolism disease can result because of a combination of risk factors, including patient-related, treatment-related, and, more specifically, cancer-related factors. It is not disease-specific or a population-specific disorder, but it is more prevalent in certain specialty populations. This article will cover those specialty populations including cancer, pregnancy, and athletes.

[Vaccination in the elderly population].

It is known that the immune systems tend to weaken over time, putting elderly patients at higher risk for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular (CV) diseases, diabetes, chronic renal disorders and their complication as well as infectious disease leading to an increased mortality and morbidity rates in patients over 65 years old. Vaccination, a prophylactic treatment strategy, means that immunogenic materials from pathogens (or tumours) are administered to generate an adequate immune response specifically to these antigens. Vaccine-preventable diseases which can affect the elderly population

Trismus in the paediatric population.

Trismus is a rare presentation affecting neonates, children, and adults. In newborns there are serious implications, with potential to affect feeding, cause airway problems, and make intubation difficult. Causes of trismus seen in the paediatric patient are discussed in this review article; they are divided into intra- and extra-articular types. The extra-articular group consists of congenital and acquired disorders. The acquired group includes infective causes such as tetanus, iatrogenic causes related to drugs, cancer or dental treatment, and trauma causing articulation difficulty or trigger

Contraception for specific populations.

Almost half of the pregnancies in the United States each year are unintended. Although there are multiple contraceptive options available, providers often struggle with meeting the special requirements of adolescent, postpartum, and perimenopausal patients. Adolescents often have trouble adhering to a contraceptive regimen; postmenopausal women face an increasing risk of medical comorbidities. With postpartum women, the risks and benefits of the method must be considered for both the woman and the infant. The contraceptive needs of these populations are specifically addressed in this article.

Itch in ethnic populations.

Racial and ethnic differences in the prevalence and clinical characteristics of itch have rarely been studied. The aim of this review is to highlight possible associations between ethnicity and different forms of chronic itch. We provide a current review of the prevalence of different types of itch in ethnic populations. Genetic variation may significantly affect receptors for itch as well as response to anti-pruritic therapies. Primary cutaneous amyloidosis, a type of pruritic dermatosis, is particularly common in Asians and rare in Caucasians and African Americans, and this may relate to a g

Prophylaxis in the haemophilia population.

Prophylaxis is recommended as preventive therapy for young boys with severe haemophilia in countries where safe factor concentrates are available. This recommendation is supported by results from a randomized, controlled study that compared on-demand therapy with full-dose prophylaxis (Manco-Johnson MJ, Abshire TC, Shapiro AD et al. N Engl J Med 2007;357:535). It is important to distinguish primary vs. secondary prophylaxis. Primary prophylaxis refers to preventive treatment started before the onset of joint damage, whereas secondary prophylaxis refers to treatment started after joint damage h
