Association of neutrophil to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio with overactive bladder: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is involved in the progression of overactive bladder (OAB). This study aimed to investigate the association between the neutrophil to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHR) and OAB. METHODS: Data from seven cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2018 were analyzed to examine the relationship between NHR and OAB. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to estimate the association between NHR and OAB, along with restricted cubic spline regression to assess the dose-response relationship. Additionally, subg

Utilization of Quantitative Ultrasound Methods for Bone Mass Density Measurement in General Population - An Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Although osteoporosis can be diagnosed by many methods like quantitative ultrasound (QUS), peripheral dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), hand X-rays, or clinical examinations but the diseases remain undertreated mainly due to a lack of mechanism to identify individuals who may be at high risk of fracture and might get benefit from the timey interventions. The availability of central DEXA is not uniform in many countries; hence, a reliable, cheap, portable handy equipment is needed. Role of QUS as an alternative to DEXA has been studied for selective population but a very fe

Correlation of muscle mass and bone mineral density in the NHANES US general population, 2017-2018.

The appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) is commonly used to evaluate human skeletal muscle mass. Muscle, an adjacent tissue of bone, is closely related to bone growth and development. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between the ASMI and lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) to identify potential risk factors for osteoporosis. We analyzed the data collected by the NHANES from 2017 to 2018, and finally included 948 participants aged 40 to 59 years. We evaluated the correlation between the ASMI and lumbar spine BMD using univariate and multiple linear regression mo

Ambient air pollution, bone mineral density and osteoporosis: Results from a national population-based cohort study.

Evidence concerning the associations of ambient air pollution exposure with bone mineral density and osteoporosis has been mixed. We conducted cross-sectional and prospective analysis of the associations between air pollution exposure and osteoporosis using data from UK Biobank study. Estimated bone mineral density (eBMD) of each participant at baseline survey was calculated using quantitative ultrasound data, and incident osteoporosis cases were identified during the follow-up period according to health-related records. Air pollution concentrations were assessed using land use regression mode

Evaluation of Hair Density and Hair Diameter in the Adult Thai Population Using Quantitative Trichoscopic Analysis.

The data of hair density and hair diameter in the Asian population, especially in Thais, are limited. We aimed to evaluate hair density and hair diameter of members of the Thai population at different scalp sites and to determine the effect of sex and aging as well as to compare the results with those in groups of other ethnicities. Healthy Thais whose hair examination findings were normal were evaluated. Two hundred and thirty-nine subjects participated in this study, of whom 79 were male and 160 were female. Hair density and hair diameter were analyzed at four different scalp sites using qua

Decreasing trend of bone mineral density in US multiethnic population: analysis of continuous NHANES 2005-2014.

UNLABELLED: Studies examining recent bone mineral density (BMD) trends in the US population are limited. In our study, we found that age-adjusted mean BMD among US men and women was stable from 2005 to 2010, but then declined in 2013-2014. We also explored factors associated with decreasing BMD in recent years. INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis prevalence in the USA declined between 1988 and 2006, while the declining trend in hip fracture may have plateaued in 2013-2014. We aimed to examine whether there has been a corresponding change in BMD trajectory for the US population. METHODS: Continuous Na

Low mineral density of a weight-bearing bone among adult women in a high fertility population.

Evolutionary theories of aging posit that greater reproductive effort causes somatic decline given a fundamental trade-off between investing energy in reproduction and repair. Few studies in high fertility human populations support this hypothesis, and problems of phenotypic correlation can obscure the expected trade-off between reproduction and somatic condition. This cross-sectional study investigates whether greater reproductive effort is associated with reduced calcaneal bone mineral density (BMD) among female Tsimane forager-farmers of lowland Bolivia. We also investigate whether female T

A population-based tissue probability map-driven level set method for fully automated mammographic density estimations.

PURPOSE: A major challenge when distinguishing glandular tissues on mammograms, especially for area-based estimations, lies in determining a boundary on a hazy transition zone from adipose to glandular tissues. This stems from the nature of mammography, which is a projection of superimposed tissues consisting of different structures. In this paper, the authors present a novel segmentation scheme which incorporates the learned prior knowledge of experts into a level set framework for fully automated mammographic density estimations. METHODS: The authors modeled the learned knowledge as a popul

Fragility fractures and bone mineral density in HIV positive women: a case-control population-based study.

UNLABELLED: This Canadian study of bone health showed that HIV+ women were more likely to have had fragility fractures (OR 1.7) but had BMD values that were not different than women from a national population-based cohort. INTRODUCTION: Given that 17.5 million women globally are HIV-infected and living longer on anti-retroviral therapy (ART+), it is essential to determine whether they are at risk for osteoporosis as is currently assumed. METHODS: Assessment of osteoporosis risk factors and lifetime low-trauma (fragility) fracture history used a common interviewer-administered questionnaire a

Bone mineral density and risk factors for osteoporosis--a population-based study of 1600 perimenopausal women.

Population-based epidemiological studies on osteoporosis are few. Our study evaluated the effects of menopause and certain putative behavioural risk factors on bone mineral density (BMD). Spinal and femoral neck BMD were measured with dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) from 1600 perimenopausal women aged 48-59 years (mean 53.2 years) with no diseases or medications known to affect bone metabolism. These women were a selected sample of the Kuopio Osteoporosis Risk Factor and Prevention Study population (n = 14,220). There was a wide variation of BMD among perimenopausal women. Menopause had a majo

Remnant cholesterol associates with hypertension beyond low-density lipoprotein cholesterol among the general US adult population.

BACKGROUND: Previous findings have indicated that elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and remnant cholesterol (RC) are associated with hypertension. We aim to explore whether higher RC levels may be associated with hypertension beyond LDL-C in the general US adult population. METHODS: This study included 10,842 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2018. Weighted multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) of hypertension for LDL-C and RC. We also performed analyses examining the association bet

The impact of breast density notification on rescreening rates within a population-based mammographic screening program.

BACKGROUND: High participation in mammographic screening is essential for its effectiveness to detect breast cancers early and thereby, improve breast cancer outcomes. Breast density is a strong predictor of breast cancer risk and significantly reduces the sensitivity of mammography to detect the disease. There are increasing mandates for routine breast density notification within mammographic screening programs. It is unknown if breast density notification impacts the likelihood of women returning to screening when next due (i.e. rescreening rates). This study investigates the association bet

Association analyses of FGFR2 gene polymorphisms with femoral neck bone mineral density in Chinese Han population.

Femoral neck (FN) bone mineral density (BMD) is the most important risk phenotype for osteoporosis and has been used as a reference standard for describing osteoporosis. Identification of genetic variations associated with FN BMD may provide potential targets for therapeutic studies. Given the important biological role of FGFR2 gene involved in bone, we tested the associations between FGFR2 polymorphisms and FN BMD in 1,300 Chinese Han subjects. Of the 28 total SNPs, 2 SNPs, namely rs11200014 and rs1078806, were significantly associated with FN BMD under dominant model (P = 0.0014 and 0.0012,
