Jails, prisons, and the health of urban populations: a review of the impact of the correctional system on community health.

This review examined the interactions between the correctional system and the health of urban populations. Cities have more poor people, more people of color, and higher crime rates than suburban and rural areas; thus, urban populations are overrepresented in the nation's jails and prisons. As a result, US incarceration policies and programs have a disproportionate impact on urban communities, especially black and Latino ones. Health conditions that are overrepresented in incarcerated populations include substance abuse, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other infectious diseases, perpetr

The impacts on population health by China's regional health data centers and the potential mechanism of influence.

BACKGROUND: China recently established a series of pilot regional health data centers with a mandate to acquire, consolidate, analyze, and translate data into evidence for health policy decision-making. This experiment with "big data" has the potential to influence population health and is the focus of this study. METHODS: This study used national longitudinal survey data from the China Family Panel Studies over the period 2014-2020 to empirically assess the impact of China's establishment of pilot regional health data centers on population health and health inequality. A difference-in-differ

Public Health Microbiome Curriculum: Looking Below the Tip of the Iceberg for Approaches to Population Health.

We discuss the opportunity for public health microbiome curricula to bridge the gaps in knowledge that exist between microbiome researchers and the lay public. We propose equipping public health professionals, important facilitators of public outreach and behaviour change, with three public health curriculum modules focused on breastfeeding, antibiotics and diet. These modules shift the focus from microbes as pathogens to potential partners in promoting health across the life course. Current public health messages cover only the 'tip of the iceberg' in exploring mechanisms, and this microbiome

[Racial inequalities in oral health in the Brazilian population: an analysis of the 2019 National Health Survey].

The scope of this study was to identify racial inequalities in oral health among the Brazilian population. This cross-sectional study used data from 64,830 Brazilians aged between 18 and 59 who participated in the 2019 National Health Survey. The outcomes evaluated were: self-assessment of oral health, loss of 13 or more teeth, use of prostheses, and recent use of dental services. The explanatory variables included race, gender, age, income, education, and area of residence. Poisson regression was used to obtain prevalence ratios (PR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Of the total, 41.8% we

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of the general population and health care workers.

The Health Sciences Foundation has assembled a multidisciplinary group around a series of questions about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of the general population and specific groups within that population, particularly healthcare workers. In the general population, the most prevalent mental disorders have been anxiety, sleep disorders and affective disorders, primarily depression. There has been a considerable increase in suicidal behavior, especially in young women and men over 70 years of age. There has been an increase in alcohol abuse and nicotine, cannabis and c

MicroEnv: A microsimulation model for quantifying the impacts of environmental policies on population health and health inequalities.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognise the critical need to improve population health and environmental sustainability. This paper describes the development of a microsimulation model, MicroEnv, aimed at quantifying the impact of environmental exposures on health as an aid to selecting policies likely to have greatest benefit. Its methods allow the integration of morbidity and mortality outcomes and the generation of results at high spatial resolution. We illustrate its application to the assessment of the impact of air pollution on health in London. Simulations are performed at Lo

Supporting Population Mental Health in the Wake of Mass Tragedies.

The Bondi Beach terrorist attack has caused widespread community distress resulting in complex psychosocial challenges that require urgent attention to protect population mental health. Acute reactions including shock, fear and anger are normative, while the psychological responses unfolding over time may vary from adaptive to dysfunctional. A range of mental health and psychosocial services have been mobilised to address acute needs; however, to ensure a sustained and coherent framework of care, interventions should be guided by a set of principles that accurately respond to the unique nature

Vitamin K status and vascular health in a general population.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Vitamin K has been proposed to have a preventive effect against arterial calcification through activation of the vitamin K dependent proteins and potentially protect against progression of atherosclerosis. Our aim was to assess the association between vitamin K status and vascular health in a general elderly population. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a cross-sectional study, the vitamin status was measured using the inverse biomarker, dephospho-uncarboxylated Matrix Gla Protein (dp-ucMGP). Vascular health was reflected by total coronary artery calcification (CAC) score and corona

Estrogen exposure and skeletal health: Special populations and considerations.

UNLABELLED: Estrogen is critical for bone health from puberty onwards. Various clinical scenarios in adolescence can impact skeletal exposure to estrogen during this vulnerable time. Primary ovarian insufficiency, premature menopause, and anorexia nervosa necessitate prompt evaluation, treatment, and replacement of estrogen in order to optimize accrual of peak bone mass. We have much still to learn about the skeletal impact of delaying puberty and gender affirming hormones in gender diverse individuals. While the choice of hormonal contraception in adolescence is often driven by patient prefer

[Public health recommendations as microaggressions: monkeypox and LGBTQIA+ populations].

The article aims to analyze public health recommendations of the World Health Organization and the manifestations of its Director-General during the mpox epidemic addressed to men who have sex with men (MSM) in the light of microaggression as a category of analysis. The stigmatizing potential of statistical disclosure to a broad public that 98% of those infected were among MSM is questioned, as well as the use of the MSM category itself and the suggestion of partial or total sexual abstinence as a way to stop viral dissemination. The following are suggested as alternatives capable of simultane

Weight Gain and Mental Health in the Canadian Prison Population.

Most inmates gain excessive bodyweight during incarceration in Canadian federal penitentiaries. It is currently unknown if the weight gain is related to participants' higher prevalence of mental illness and/or psychotropic medication use. This study examined how weight change (kg) and body mass index (BMI) change (kg/m2) of 1,420 participants were associated with mental health status and psychotropic medication use. Participants who took psychotropic medications did not gain more weight during incarceration compared to their counterparts who were not taking psychotropic medications (6.5 kg vs.
