A method for estimating time since death through analysis of substances deposited on the surface of dental enamel in a body immersed in freshwater.

Estimating the elapsed time after death of a corpse immersed in freshwater is often challenging owing to body temperature changes and the degree of postmortem lividity, and the tissues used for this assessment deteriorate drastically as the postmortem period progresses. In this study, assuming a corpse was immersed in freshwater, we analyzed changes in the amount of deposits on the enamel surface of teeth since the time of immersion using an electron probe microanalyzer. We calculated a regression equation for estimating the time of immersion in water (the time after death). We considered this

Decomposition variability between the scene and autopsy examination and implications for post-mortem interval estimations.

Forensic experts rely on scene and/or autopsy photographs to estimate the post-mortem interval (PMI) when an in-situ assessment of decomposition is unfeasible. The degree of decomposition may vary between the scene and autopsy, which importantly could affect estimations of the unknown PMI in forensic casework. This study aimed to investigate decomposition variability between the scene and autopsy and assess the subsequent effect on the accuracy of PMI estimations. Scene and autopsy photographs from 94 cases with known PMI were used from the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner in Pi

The Netherlands brain bank--a clinico-pathological link in aging and dementia research.

The number of sophisticated neurobiological techniques which can be applied on human brain has rapidly increased and causes an increased demand for post-mortem human brain tissue for research purposes. Brain banks, which collect post-mortem tissue from patients who suffered from neurological and psychiatric disorders, have become an important link between clinicians, scientists and neuropathologists involved in aging and dementia research. Due to the large variability of the material, there are many drawbacks in the use of post-mortem brains. Therefore, collecting human brain tissue for resear

Pressure response of human colon to intraluminal distension.

Pressure response to intraluminal distension was recorded in the ascending and descending colon of six subjects awaiting closure of transverse colostomies to assess and compare compliance in different regions of the human colon. Resistance to distension was significantly greater in the descending colon at intraluminal volumes of 30 ml or greater (P less than 0.01). An equal number of postmortem studies, representing passive connective tissue resistance, demonstrated a similar but more pronounced difference (P less than 0.001), which was maintained after correction for initial intraluminal diam

The influence of putrefactive changes on the determination of Paraquat in autopsy materials.

This paper describes how the putrefactive changes in a cadaver will influence the determination of Paraquat in autopsy material. The carcasses of rats that had been given large doses of Paraquat and subsequently killed by cervical dislocation, were left at room temperature for up to seven days. Samples of stomach, caecum and liver were removed for the colorimetric determination of Paraquat with sodium dithionite following extraction on a Dowex 50W-4 column. Paraquat recovered from the stomach and caecum showed a decrease with time after death with the rate of decrease being greater in the caec

[The significance of the settling of blood into dependent and soft tissues as evidence for death by throttling and choking (author's transl)].

14 fresh cadavers of adult persons were placed with the head or body tilted in atypical positions 3 to 65 hours after death. The persons concerned were neither asphyxiated nor had they suffered cranial trauma. Hypostasis in the head and neck occurred more rapidly and intensively the deeper the cranial parts of the body were placed. In the simulated cadaver positions, artificial ecchymoses were observed in only a few places, mainly in the eyelids, the conjunctiva, the galea and the temporal muscles except when the head was vertically downwards. Just as with the postmortem haematomas, the hypost

[Analysis of expert diagnostics and identification of sharp objects on putrefactively altered corpses in the Republic of Bashkortostan for 2013-2023].

The article presents an analysis of cases of fatal injury with sharp objects in the Republic of Bashkortostan for the period from 2013 to 2023. It has been established that acute trauma accounts for more than 5% of the structure of fatal mechanical injury. Among them, victims with stab wounds prevailed (85.3%). Corpses in a state of pronounced putrefactive changes occur annually and cause significant difficulties in conducting forensic medical examinations of acute trauma. The study of putrefactive corpses necessitates the improvement of existing techniques, as well as the search, development

[On the forensic medical significance of cadaveric imbibition around subcutaneous veins in cases of death from general hypothermia].

This study focuses on an important aspect of forensic medical diagnostics: the identification and interpretation of tissue discoloration around subcutaneous veins that occurs during general hypothermia. We delve into the morphological manifestations of this phenomenon, its mechanisms of development, and its role in differential diagnosis. We particularly emphasize how this feature helps to establish the fact and extent of low-temperature exposure on the body, as well as to rule out other possible causes of death. Drawing on the analysis of scientific literature and our own practical experience

[Forensic aspects of rigor mortis at death from general hypothermia].

Forensic doctors, pathologists and pathophysiologists have long been arguing about the time of the appearance and development of rigor mortis (postmortem contracture of muscle tissue) at death from general hypothermia. There are many theories of the causes and mechanisms of the development of rigor mortis, concepts about the time of its appearance, judgments about the intensity and duration. It is believed that the time of onset, intensity and duration of rigor mortis in the muscles should be influenced by the initial content of muscle glycogen at the time of death. There are a number of opini

"Omics" and Postmortem Interval Estimation: A Systematic Review.

Postmortem interval (PMI) estimation is a challenge of utmost importance in forensic daily practice. Traditional methods face limitations in accuracy and reliability, particularly for advanced decomposition stages. Recent advances in "omics" sciences, providing a holistic view of postmortem biochemical changes, offer promising avenues for overcoming these challenges. This systematic review aims at investigating the role of mass-spectrometry-based "omics" approaches in PMI estimation to elucidate molecular mechanisms underlying predictable time-dependent biochemical alterations occurring after

50 Years of postmortem redistribution research: What have we learned?

Interpretation of postmortem (PM) drug concentrations is challenging as these concentrations do not necessarily reflect drug concentrations at the time of death, due to PM changes in drug concentrations primarily caused by PM redistribution (PMR). In this review article, we discuss the advantages and limitations of different study designs historically utilized to investigate PMR and their most important findings. PM administration studies in cadavers suggest time dependent redistribution by diffusion from a single high concentration reservoir to surrounding fluids and tissues. In animal studie

Research Progress on Estimation of Postmortem Interval Based on Ocular Tissues Structure.

Estimation of postmortem interval (PMI) is one of the important research contents in forensic pathology, and it has always been the focus and hot spot of research work. In recent years, scholars at home and abroad have made some research progress in estimating PMI by using ocular tissue. After death, the changes of cornea, aqueous humor, iris, lens, vitreous humor and retina all show time sequence change rule highly related to PMI. This paper reviews the research progress of PMI estimation based on the morphological, biochemical, molecular and genetic material changes of different ocular tissu

A Suggested Mechanism for Green Discoloration of the Postmortem Brain.

In the putrefied brain, the cortex and basal ganglia show dark-grayish to green discoloration due to sulfhemoglobin formed from hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) produced by endogenous bacteria and hemoglobin. In this study, we propose and demonstrate another mechanism of green discoloration in the brain. The formalin-fixed brain of a cadaver donated for medical education with no putrefaction was used. Half of the brain was immersed in sodium hydrosulfide solution, to imitate the H 2 S produced by bacteria. This half showed greenish discoloration, mainly in the basal ganglia and cortex. The other half

Post-mortem changes of the vascular system-a thanatological study using multidetector computed tomography.

Forensic pathologists have to deal with post-mortem changes of the human body. Those post-mortem phenomena are familiar and largely described in thanatology. However, knowledge about the influence of post-mortem phenomena on the vascular system is more limited, except for the apparition and development of cadaveric lividity. The introduction of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the forensic field and the expansion of their usage in medico-legal routine, allow for exploring the inside of corpses differently and may play a part in the understanding

Effects on oral tissues of asphyxiation caused by cervical compression: The pink teeth phenomenon in Kato's studies (1941).

The effects on oral tissues of asphyxiation caused by cervical compression were investigated in 203 rabbits by Kiyotoshi Kato, who published four papers in classical Japanese in Kokubyo Gakkai Zasshi (now The Journal of the Stomatological Society, Japan) in 1941. The aim of this review is to summarize and disseminate the enormous amount of experimental data (reprint permission in English has been obtained from the journal). Based on the experimental models of hanging, strangulation with an external force equal to body weight, and strangulation with an external force equal to 1/10th body weight

Emerging issues in the approach to submerged bodies: Water-related deaths in Friuli, northeastern Italy (1993-2020). Analysis of post-mortem reports and some unusual cases.

When analysing bodies recovered from a watery environment, all manners of death, a variety of causes of death and the possibility of body disposal have to be considered. Unclear circumstances of death, unidentified victims and body decomposition may hamper a forensic investigation. The lack of specific and sensitive drowning-related autopsy findings and post-mortem blood alcohol levels (blood alcohol concentrations (BACs)) may also lead to erroneous conclusions. We reviewed the autopsy records for all bodies recovered from water in Friuli, northeastern Italy, over a 28-year period, focusing on

Microbial community analyses provide a differential diagnosis for the antemortem and postmortem injury of decayed cadaver: An animal model.

Differentiating antemortem injury from postmortem injury of decayed cadavers is one of the difficult issues in forensic science. Forensic pathologists identify antemortem injury according to the macroscopic and microscopic vital reactions taken place after being injured. However, the decomposition would render those vital reactions ineffective. Microbiomes have been widely used in forensic science due to their succession with time and sensitivity to vary of environment. In this study, microbiomes were introduced to determine whether the bacterial communities can be used to distinguish between

Prism - A novel approach to dead body cooling and its parameters.

In temperature based death time estimation, the mathematical description by Marshall and Hoare is combined with the parameters defined and additional correction factors introduced by Henssge in the Nomogram method (summarized as MHH). Parameters and correction factors however leave room for subjectivity and disagreement. Elevation of rectal temperature at the time of death has been acknowledged as problematic for death time estimation in several studies, but has neither been solved nor systematically integrated into death time estimation methodology. Ambient temperature, when non-constant and/

Significant postmortem diffusion of ethanol: A case report.

In the realm of forensic pathology, ethanol is one of the most frequently encountered xenobiotics. The determination of ethanol concentration in blood after death is of great interest in forensic settings. It is important to be able to determine the level of intoxication of the deceased at the time of death, which is directly correlated to the ability to act prior to death, especially when a suicide is suspected. This estimation is not always easy to establish owing to various artifacts that are important to know for a proper ethanol blood level interpretation, among them postmortem (PM) diffu

Postmortem Drug Redistribution: A Compilation of Postmortem/Antemortem Drug Concentration Ratios.

Postmortem drug redistribution (PMR) is a well-known phenomenon in forensic toxicology with implications for medico-legal death investigations. Paired antemortem (AM) specimen and postmortem (PM) mortuary admission femoral blood drug concentrations from 811 coronial cases were used to construct a retrospective compilation of PM/AM drug concentration ratios for 42 parent drugs and metabolites. The median PM/AM ratios for all antidepressants were > 1 and consistent with PMR In contrast, the median PM/AM ratios of most benzodiazepines were < 1. The antipsychotics were varied (0.63-3.3) and sugges
