BACKGROUND: Magnesium deficiency is a common symptom of chlorosis in macadamia plantations in southern China, particularly in Yunnan, which restricts their sustainable production and processing quality. This study clarified its negative effects on leaf physiology and fruit quality.
RESULTS: Magnesium-deficient plants exhibited interveinal chlorosis in lower leaves, disordered mesophyll cells, weakened chlorophyll autofluorescence, and 45.52-70.08% lower leaf magnesium content (P < 0.05), hindering chlorophyll biosynthesis. Chloroplasts were fewer in number, and ultrastructurally exhibited red

Potassium (K) is a key nutrient for increasing yield, improving quality, and enhancing stress resistance in wax gourd (Benincasa hispida). However, the phenotypic, physiological, ecological, and molecular adaptation mechanisms of wax gourd under different K levels remain poorly understood. In this study, a field experiment was conducted with three treatments, i.e., K deficiency (K0), moderate K (300 kg K2O hm-2, K300), and excessive K (500 kg K2O hm-2, K500), to evaluate the effects of K fertilization on the morphology, physiology, and transcriptomics of wax gourd. Results showed that compared

Alligator weed is reported to have a strong ability to adapt to potassium deficiency (LK) stress. Leaves are the primary organs responsible for photosynthesis of plants. However, quantitative proteomic changes in alligator weed leaves in response to LK stress are largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the physiological and proteomic changes in leaves of alligator weed under LK stress. We found that chloroplast and mesophyll cell contents in palisade tissue increased, and that the total chlorophyll content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and net photosynthetic rate (PN) increased

Thiazides and loop diuretics facilitate the loss of K and Mg through the kidneys leading to deficiencies that may require treatment with supplements. These losses may be overlooked, however, because serum concentrations may remain normal even when the muscle concentrations are appreciably reduced. In 76 patients who had received diuretics for 1-17 years, the mean concentrations of K, Mg and Na,K-pumps in skeletal muscle biopsies were significantly lower than in those from an age- and sexmatched control group, and muscle Mg and K concentrations were significantly correlated. The serum concentra

The antagonism between potassium (K+) and magnesium (Mg2+) is the primary cause of Mg2+ deficiency worldwide. Recent studies have demonstrated that the suppressive effect of K+ on Mg2+ uptake is significantly reduced as the K+/Mg2+ ratio increases, as both cations share non-specific cation channels. Concomitantly, the relative root/shoot translocation of Mg2+ increased. In contrast, there are indications that elevated tissue [K+] impedes the primary physiological functions of Mg2+. In this study on Zea mays L., the involvement of the only known specific Mg2+ uptake transporter ZmMGT10 and that

Iodine-rich herbs such as seaweed, kelp, and sea tangle were widely used to treat various types of goiter with good effect and without any adverse side effects in China. When compared with potassium iodate (PI), iodine-rich herbs had a positive effect on the recovery of goiter resulting from iodine deficiency without any obvious harmful effects. In NOD.H-2h4 mice, an autoimmune thyroiditis-prone model, iodine excess can increase infiltration of lymphocytes and structural damage of the thyroid follicles, hence resulting in thyroiditis. Until now, there has been little research on the comparativ

The effect of severe zinc deficiency on the distribution of nine elements (potassium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese) in brain regions (olfactory lobes, right and left hippocampi, cerebellum and the rest of the brain) has been studied. After male rats (30 days old) were fed a zinc-deficient diet for 28 days, the zinc concentration of most brain parts was similar to zinc-adequate control values. Olfactory lobe zinc, on the other hand, was slightly depressed. However, the levels of other metals were dependent on zinc nutriture. Zinc deficiency caused an

Type II Bartter's syndrome is a hereditary hypokalemic renal salt-wasting disorder caused by mutations in the ROMK channel (Kir1.1; Kcnj1), mediating potassium recycling in the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop (TAL) and potassium secretion in the distal tubule and cortical collecting duct (CCT). Newborns with Type II Bartter are transiently hyperkalemic, consistent with loss of ROMK channel function in potassium secretion in distal convoluted tubule and CCT. Yet, these infants rapidly develop persistent hypokalemia owing to increased renal potassium excretion mediated by unknown mechanisms

Wistar rats were fed a low magnesium diet for 8 or 12 weeks, resulting in reduced levels of magnesium in plasma, heart, and skeletal muscle, as compared with pair-fed control rats. The magnesium-deficient rats also had reduced tissue levels of potassium. Coronary arteries and thoracic aorta from magnesium-deficient rats and control rats were incubated in tissue baths and the contractile responses to potassium, 5-hydroxy-tryptamine, and prostaglandin F2 alpha were investigated using a sensitive in vitro system. The concentration-contraction curve, for all agents was shifted to the left in coron

Magnesium deficiency is frequently associated with hypokalemia. Concomitant magnesium deficiency aggravates hypokalemia and renders it refractory to treatment by potassium. Herein is reviewed literature suggesting that magnesium deficiency exacerbates potassium wasting by increasing distal potassium secretion. A decrease in intracellular magnesium, caused by magnesium deficiency, releases the magnesium-mediated inhibition of ROMK channels and increases potassium secretion. Magnesium deficiency alone, however, does not necessarily cause hypokalemia. An increase in distal sodium delivery or elev

We investigated the possible role of potassium deficiency, a recognized cause of myopathy, in the pathogenesis of experimental acute alcoholic myopathy (EAM) in the rat. Alcohol-treated animals receiving the same dietary potassium as controls developed mild hypokalemia; however, muscle potassium was preserved or elevated even in the presence of scattered muscle fiber necrosis. Increasing dietary potassium raised serum potassium but did not prevent EAM. These data indicate that hypokalemia in EAM is due to potassium redistribution between intra- and extracellular compartments rather than potass

Diuretic therapy is the most common cause of potassium deficiency. Although the extent of potassium deficiency usually does not exceed 200 or 300 mEq, under appropriate circumstances such modest deficiency may have important consequences. Factors that tend to increase the incidence or severity of potassium deficiency in patients who take diuretics include high salt diets, large urine volumes, metabolic alkalosis, increased aldosterone production, and the simultaneous use of two diuretics that act on different sites in the renal tubule. There are many serious complications of potassium deficien

Hypokalemia poses a common diagnostic challenge with many potential etiologies. Multiple factors may contribute to this electrolyte deficiency in any given patient. Gastrointestinal potassium wasting usually is identifiable by an associated increase in fluid losses via biliary tract or bowel. A urinary potassium excretion of 20 mEq or more per day in the presence of a low serum potassium (less than 3.5 mEq/L) suggests inappropriate potassium wasting. Although diuretic therapy (loop diuretics, thiazides) undoubtedly is the most common cause of a potassium deficit, one also must consider abnorma

Metabolic balance studies were performed in two groups of 6 rats each, pair-fed a diet deficient in potassium. While one group was injected with desoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) for 11 days, the other group, used as a control, was injected with oil. The administration of DOCA suppressed or reversed the thirst, natriuresis, diuresis, calciuria and magnesiuria that developed in the potassium-deficient control group. Potassium-depleted DOCA-treated rats had a more positive water and sodium balance, experienced a significant expansion in plasma volume, had a more negative potassium balance and

This paper is intended to give a review of the etiology and symptoms of potassium deficiency in man, as an introduction to the section on potassium and cardiac arrhythmias of this symposium. A review is given of different conditions where hypokalemia and/or total potassium deficiency is or might be part of the clinical picture, such as conditions with insufficient dietary intake, gastrointestinal potassium losses (e.g. vomiting, fistulas, malabsorption, abuse of laxatives and diarrhea), and renal potassium losses (e.g. primary and secondary hyperaldosteronism, Cushing's syndrome, intake of lic

Magnesium ion (Mg) directly inhibits aldosterone production in rat adrenal glomerulosa cells, while potassium ion directly stimulates aldosterone production. It is reported that Mg shows antihypertensive effect in patients with essential hypertension. Secondary hyperaldosteronism induced by diuretic treatment in patients with congestive heart failure accelerates potassium and magnesium ions' excretion in urine. Diuretic-induced falls in potassium and magnesium ions and aldosterone-induced cardiac fibrosis and remodelling are associated with fatal ventricular arrhythmia. Aldosterone antagonists

Magnesium may influence the incidence of cardiac arrhythmias by 1) a direct effect 2) an effect on potassium metabolism 3) an effect as a calcium blocking agent. In the event of a magnesium deficiency the cell cannot attract potassium against the transmembrane concentration gradient. The reason may be that a magnesium deficiency interferes with the function of membrane ATPase, and thus the pumping of sodium out from the cell and potassium into the cell is impaired. The interference from a magnesium deficiency on the equilibrium of potassium between the intra- and extracellular spaces may resul
