Although potassium permanganate (KMnO4) flushing is commonly used to destroy chlorinated solvents in groundwater, many of the problems associated with this treatment scheme have not been examined in detail. We conducted a KMnO4 flushing experiment in a large sand-filled flow tank (L x W x D = 180 cm x 60 cm x 90 cm) to remove TCE emplaced as a DNAPL in a source zone. In an earlier report, a modification of the Attwood's stain was used to study sections of decalcified bone and the procedure aided in the distinction between lamellar and woven bone. Lamellar bone showed preferential affinity for phloxine (red) yet resisted differentiation with tartrazine (yellow), while woven bone stained well with tartrazine. In addition, osteoid seams were identified by their affinity for tartrazine. Differential staining was abolished by pretreatment with periodic acid. Comparative studies were carried out with 8 antibiotics, furazolidon, and 9 disinfection agents with regard to the sensitivity of a total of 14 strains of Listeria monocytogenes. The agents used were the most commonly employed ones in the practice in routinely applied concentrations. It was found that L. monocytogenes strains isolated from sheep had good sensitivity to the action of erythromycin, and penicillin, and were more slightly sensitive to chloramphenicol, gentamycin, tetracycline, and furazolidon. Liver biopsies from 18 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and from 25 patients with chronic active hepatitis (CAH) were stained by orcein after oxidation of the tissue sections with potassium permanganate. In 15 out of the 18 cases which could be classified on clinical, biochemical and immunological basis as PBC, the hepatocytes, usually periportally, contained cytoplasmic stainable material. 5 out of the 25 CAH patients contained the same material, but four of these patients were clinically atypical and showed features of cholestatic form of CAH and features crosslinking with PBC.

The authors describe a colorimetric immunoassay for the model nalyte aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). It is based on the just-in-time generation of an MnO2 nanocatalyst. Unlike previously developed immunoassay, the chromogenic reaction relies on the just-in-time formation of an oxidase mimic without the aid of the substrate. Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is converted into manganese dioxide (MnO2) which acts as an oxidase mimic that catalyzes the oxidation 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by oxygen to give a blue colored product. In the presence of ascorbic acid (AA), KMnO4 is reduced to Mn(II) ions.
