OBJECTIVE: Low incidence of Pott's Puffy tumor (PPT) has caused studying risk factors and recurrences of the disease to be difficult. We used the comparatively increased incidence at our institution to evaluate potential risk factors for the disease process itself and prognostic factors for recurrence of the disease.
METHODS: Single institutional retrospective chart review identified 31 patients from 2010 to 2022 with PPT compared with a control group of 20 patients with either chronic rhinosinusitis or recurrent sinusitis. Patient mean age of PPT was 42 (range of 5 to 90) with the majority o

Orbital subperiosteal abscess (SPA) and Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) are the major extracranial complications of acute sinusitis. These complications are aggravated by the close anatomic relationships between the nasal sinuses and the orbits and frontal bone. Furthermore, the rich diploic venous drainage of the region enhances the spread of the infection. Between 1992 and 1997, 16 patients (mean age 12 years, range 2-15, 10 of them males), 11 of them with SPA and 4 with PPT were operated on by the senior author by means of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Indications for operation included: CT find

Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is a disease common among adolescents in the United States. Frequently, symptoms include sore throat, malaise, fevers, lymphadenopathy, and abdominal pain. Severe complications have been reported such as splenic rupture, acute upper airway obstruction, hepatitis, acute renal failure, and hematological and neurological complications. The mainstay of treatment is supportive care. Steroids are recommended for impending airway obstruction and hematological complications. However, steroids are commonly used in uncomplicated cases of IM, with insufficient evidence on th

Pott's puffy tumour (PPT) is characterised by a subperiosteal abscess associated with osteomyelitis of the frontal bone-a rare complication of frontal sinusitis, more common in the paediatric population. We describe a case mimicking PPT, where abscess extension was facilitated by previous surgery. Usually patients with PPT would be systemically unwell, but our patient, a 63-year-old Caucasian man, was systemically well with a large swelling of his forehead. A CT was performed to evaluate possible intracranial and intracerebral complications such as epidural, subdural and brain abscesses. Emerg

Pott's puffy tumour (PPT) is a rare complication of frontal sinusitis involving subperiosteal abscess and frontal bone osteomyelitis, often leading to serious intracranial sequelae. We report a case of a man in his 50s who presented with progressive, painless forehead swelling despite multiple antibiotic courses. Imaging confirmed bilateral subperiosteal collections and a right-sided epidural empyema. Initial management included broad-spectrum antibiotics, endoscopic sinus surgery and external drainage. Due to persistent collections, a second-stage osteoplastic approach was performed, resultin

BACKGROUND: Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the frontal sinus is extremely rare. In addition, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been reported to play a role in the development of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related malignant lymphomas. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report for the HIV-associated, EBV-positive primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) in the frontal sinus.
CASE SUMMARY: We present a unique case of HIV-associated, EBV-positive DLBCL in the frontal sinus in a 46-year-old man. Computed tomography of paranasal sinuses revealed dense opacification of the right fr

BACKGROUND: Massive subgaleal hematoma is defined as profuse bleeding in the subgaleal layer of the scalp, causing excessive accumulation of hematoma, thus progressively increasing the size of head circumference. If not immediately diagnosed and managed carefully, continuous bleeding will lead to hematoma enlargement, impairing the functions of surrounding organ(s) and general homeostasis. In severe cases, subgaleal hematoma could lead to severe morbidity or even death.
CASE REPORT: We describe the case of an 11-year-old girl with a history of microcephaly and intellectual disability, present

OBJECTIVE: Review costs for pediatric patients with complicated acute sinusitis.
METHODS: A retrospective case series of patients in a pediatric hospital was created to determine hospital costs using a standardized activity-based accounting system for inpatient treatment between November 2010 and December 2014. Children less than 18 years of age who were admitted for complicated acute sinusitis were included in the study. Demographics, length of stay, type of complication and cost of care were determined for these patients.
RESULTS: The study included 64 patients with a mean age of 10 years.

BACKGROUND: The Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG, S. anginosus, S. intermedius and S. constellatus) are often associated with severe disease and abscess formation. In our institution, we observed an apparent increase in frequency of intraorbital and intracranial infections resulting from SAG at Texas Children's Hospital. We undertook a retrospective review to describe the frequency and clinical features of these infections.
METHODS: We reviewed the database of the microbiology laboratory at Texas Children's Hospital from 2011 to 2018 for SAG-positive cultures. Cases included were those asso

Pott's puffy tumour (PPT) is a known complication of frontal sinusitis. It is defined as subperiosteal abscess formation due to osteomyelitis of the frontal bone presenting as a forehead swelling. It is a life-threatening condition that can lead to intracranial and intraorbital complications. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI and contrast CT scan are the best modalities to localise and define the collection, in addition to confirming disease extension. Once confirmed by imaging and depending on disease extension, management of PPT requires a multidisciplinary team approach and depends on the local provi

OBJECTIVE: To provide an up-to-date review summarizing the pathophysiology and management of the most common orbital and intracranial complications of acute rhinosinusitis (ARS).
METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted using the following search criteria in the PubMed database: "sinusitis" AND "complications" AND ("orbital" OR "intracranial" OR "osseous" OR "Pott's puffy tumor"). Titles and abstracts were screened for relevance. Additional articles were found by hand-searching references. Articles were chosen for inclusion based upon relevance, quality, full-text availability, an

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Management of frontal sinus disease may require drill-out of bone in the frontal recess for access, ventilation, and drainage of the sinus cavity; removal of osteitic foci; or resection of neoplastic tissue. Technological advances, particularly burrs with angles of 70 degrees and stereotactic navigational imaging, offer new opportunities to provide access and minimize trauma. The preliminary study evaluates the safety and efficacy of such minimally invasive approaches.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.
METHODS: The authors describe the use of a 70-degree diamond burr

BACKGROUND: Frontal sinus obliteration (FSO) traditionally has represented the final stage in the algorithm for difficult to manage frontal sinus disease. In addition, FSO has been used in selected cases of frontal sinus trauma. However, this procedure has been associated with failure in 5-10% of cases. Advances in surgical instrumentation and image-guided surgical navigation have permitted endoscopic management of these failures.
METHODS: Eleven patients presenting with failure of a previously performed FSO were managed endoscopically with the assistance of image-guided surgical navigation.

INTRODUCTION: A Pott's puffy tumour is a subperiosteal abscess and osteomyelitis of the frontal bone secondary to frontal sinusitis. Intracranial complications are seen in approximately 40 per cent of cases and are potentially life-threatening; such complications have not previously been reported in pregnancy.
CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old woman at 35 weeks' gestation presented with a history of frontal headaches and swelling, periorbital oedema, pain and chemosis. Imaging confirmed Pott's puffy tumour with right-sided epidural empyema and periorbital cellulitis. A multidisciplinary team was inv
