Poultry-adapted H9N2 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) are commonly found in many countries in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, and although classified as low pathogenic viruses, they are an economically important disease. Besides the importance of the disease in the poultry industry, some H9N2 AIVs are also known to be zoonotic. The disease in humans appears to cause primarily a mild upper respiratory disease, and doesn't cause or only rarely causes the severe pneumonia often seen with other zoonotic AIVs like H5N1 or H7N9. Serologic studies in humans, particularly in occupationally ex

C. difficile has been recognized as a potential zoonotic agent encouraging investigations of C. difficile prevalence and ribotypes in animals. Here we report the prevalence and diversity of Egyptian C. difficile in I) samples from healthy poultry (n = 50), II) samples from diseased poultry (n = 54), and III) poultry meat (n = 150). Thirteen isolates were obtained from seven healthy and five diseased animals, but no C. difficile was cultured from poultry meat. The isolated C. difficile strains belonged to 3 different PCR-ribotypes (039/2, 205 and 001/FLI01). The detection of strains related to

The poultry sector is crucial to global food security, but it faces increasing challenges from heat stress, viral diseases, and restrictions on antibiotic use. These stressors highlight immunometabolism, the junction of immune function and metabolic pathways, as a crucial factor in determining the productivity and health of poultry. There is growing evidence that the gut microbiota is a dynamic metabolic organ that produces a diverse range of bioactive metabolites in addition to its function in nutritional digestion. The immunometabolism of poultry is significantly influenced by these microbio

The widespread use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) in livestock production has contributed to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in pathogens. Furthermore, improper dosing and insufficient withdrawal periods lead to the presence of antibiotic residues in meat, posing significant risks to human health. Consequently, regulatory bans on AGP use in poultry and livestock have increased the susceptibility of poultry to previously controlled infectious diseases, highlighting the need for effective and safe alternatives. Postbiotics, defined as preparations of inanimate microorganis

Autogenous vaccines, also known as "custom" vaccines, have become an essential instrument in the production veterinarian's toolbox for the control of emerging and evolving diseases. Autogenous vaccines require a reduced burden of U.S. Department of Agriculture licensing, making them rapidly accessible. Autogenous vaccines have made significant advancements in the ability to reduce disease within the poultry industry from a combination of several different advancements in regulation requirements, rapid and accurate diagnostic assessments, and improvements in manufacturing. The use of autogenous

Integrated surveillance of infectious multi-source diseases using a combination of epidemiology, ecology, genetics and evolution can provide a valuable risk-based approach for the control of important human pathogens. This includes a better understanding of transmission routes and the impact of human activities on the emergence of zoonoses. Until recently New Zealand had extraordinarily high and increasing rates of notified human campylobacteriosis, and our limited understanding of the source of these infections was hindering efforts to control this disease. Genetic and epidemiological modelin

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is a transboundary disease of birds with zoonotic potential. Since 2021, H5 HPAI virus variants have spread globally, with migratory waterfowl playing a key role in transcontinental dissemination. Kazakhstan lies at the intersection of major flyways, creating a persistent risk of virus introduction into domestic poultry. While HPAI risk in wild birds has been explored in Kazakhstan, the spatial risk for poultry has remained underassessed. Here, we present a risk map for HPAI in poultry across 174 administrative districts of Kazakhstan, using a multi-cri

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC), a most common bacterial pathogen of poultry, causes multiple extra-intestinal diseases in poultry which results in significant economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide. In addition, APEC are a subgroup of extra-intestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC), and APEC contaminated poultry products are a potential source of foodborne ExPEC infections to humans and transfer of antimicrobial resistant genes. The emergence of multi-drug resistant APEC strains and the limited efficacy of vaccines necessitate novel APEC control approaches. Here, we screened a

Huge productivity loss due to infectious diseases in chickens is a major problem and, hence, robust development of the poultry industry requires control of poultry health. Immunization using vaccines is routine practice; however, to combat infectious diseases, conventional vaccines as well as new-generation recombinant vaccines alone, due to relatively weak immunogenicity, may not be effective enough to provide optimum immunity. With this in mind, there is a need to incorporate better and more suitable adjuvants in the vaccines to elicit the elevated immune response in the host. Over last few

The history of pullorum disease is closely intertwined with the history of avian health research and that of the poultry industry. The seriousness of the disease galvanized the attention and brought together, for the first time, the pioneers of poultry health research to work cooperatively on different aspects of the disease. Control of the disease made it possible for intensive poultry production to develop as the basis for the modern poultry industry. During the early 1900s, bacillary white diarrhea (BWD) was a devastating disease of young chickens threatening the developing poultry industry

Aspergillus is among a growing list of allergens that aggravate asthmatic responses. Significant pulmonary pathology is associated with Aspergillus-induced allergic and asthmatic lung disease. Environments with high levels of exposure to fungi are found in animal production facilities such as for swine and poultry, and farmers working with these are at increased risk for occupational respiratory diseases. Seven Portuguese poultry and seven swine farms were analyzed in order to estimate the prevalence, amount, and distribution of Aspergillus species, as well as to determine the presence of clin

Mites act as the vectors of zoonotic vector-borne disease scrub typhus caused by the rickettsial pathogen Orientia tsutsugamushi. In India, scrub typhus is transmitted by the mite Leptotrombidium deliense. Rodents are the reservoirs and support the spread of this disease. Sarcoptes scabiei or the itch mite is causing scabies which is a common skin infection in India. Dermatitis, trombiculosis, and mite dust allergy are common mite-borne diseases transmitted by Pyemotidae family. D. brevis folliculorum and Demodex brevis are two major mite species found on humans also causing a disease; "Demodi

Infectious bronchitis (IB) continues to be a global threat to poultry producers. The chicken major histocompatibility complex (MHC) or chicken B complex is compact, restricted to a single chromosome, and approximately 20-fold smaller than the mammalian MHC. Abundant evidence indicates that the B complex is strongly associated with resistance to various infectious agents in chickens. While an association between different B haplotypes and resistance against several bacterial and viral diseases has been established, additional work needs to be performed on the association between the B complex a

The avian immunosuppressive and neoplastic diseases caused by Marek's disease virus (MDV), avian leucosis virus (ALV), and reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) are seriously harmful to the global poultry industry. In recent years, particularly in 2020-2022, outbreaks of such diseases in chicken flocks frequently occurred in China. Herein, we collected live diseased birds from 30 poultry farms, out of 42 farms with tumour-bearing chicken flocks distributed in central China, to investigate the current epidemiology and co-infections of these viruses. The results showed that in individual diseased bi

Campylobacter is one of the most common foodborne diseases worldwide with increasing rates of antibiotic resistance. Most cases of campylobacteriosis can be traced back to the consumption of poultry meat. Despite many efforts to reduce contamination in farms and in slaughterhouses, the persistence of this pathogen in poultry products remains a problem. This study aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity and antibiotic resistance of 542 C. jejuni and C. coli in Italian poultry, in the framework of two National Monitoring Programs. Genomes were screened for antibiotic resistance, virulence determ
