Lipid profile changes through nurse-led cardiac rehabilitation: evidence from a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) continue to be the leading cause of death worldwide, with dyslipidemia as one of their main risk factors. Nurse-led cardiac rehabilitation (NLCR) has been shown to improve the quality of life of cardiac patients. We aim to measure its effect on lipid levels. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials comparing NLCR with usual care. Major electronic databases and grey literature sources were searched through July 31, 2025. Eligible studies reported at least one lipid outcome, including triglycerides (TG), total chol

Congruence between perceived and theoretical knowledge before and after an internet-based continuing education program about venous leg ulcer nursing care.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has revealed nurses' knowledge gaps in venous leg ulcer (VLU) nursing care, and continuing education is needed. The closer nurses' perceived knowledge is to their evidence-based theoretical knowledge, the better possibilities they have to conduct evidence-based VLU nursing care. OBJECTIVES: To assess the congruence between nurses' perceived and theoretical knowledge about VLU nursing care before and after an internet-based education about VLU nursing care (eVLU). DESIGN: Quasi-experimental study with intervention and comparison groups and pre- and post-measureme

Labor Intervention and Outcomes in Women Who Are Nulliparous and Obese: Comparison of Nurse-Midwife to Obstetrician Intrapartum Care.

BACKGROUND: Women who are obese have slower labors than women of normal weight, and show reduced response to interventions designed to speed labor progress like oxytocin augmentation and artificial rupture of membranes. The optimal labor management for these women has not been described. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study compared 2 propensity score-matched groups of women (N = 360) who were healthy, nulliparous, spontaneously laboring, and obese (body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2 ). Labors were managed by either a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) or an obstetrician at one hospital from 2005 thro

Effectiveness of nurse-led clinics on service delivery and clinical outcomes in adults with chronic ear, nose and throat complaints: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Ear, nose and throat complaints are very common and can cause significant disruption to patients' lives. Many conditions are of a chronic nature and are not currently managed in a timely manner by general practitioners in the community. This may be due to a lack of specialized knowledge, necessary diagnostic equipment or time for lengthy patient education on management of their condition. A nurse-led model of care may be an effective alternative. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of nurse-led clinics on adults with chronic ear, nose and throat complaints. INCLUSION CRITERIA

Medication absorption for patients with an ileostomy.

The Association of Stoma Care Nurses UK (2013) has stressed that it is the role of the stoma care nurse to provide education to patients, carers, prescribers and other nurses. This includes the area of medication management. Ensuring patients with an ileostomy receive their medication in a form they can absorb is of importance to every stoma care nurse. Prescribing for patients with a stoma calls for special care. Each patient with an ileostomy requires assessment of their medication regimen for the purpose of identifying potential medical absorption issues. However, from an extensive literatu

Continence advice by telehealth for young people.

Children and young people operate in an advanced technological world where new, exciting opportunities exist for remote interactions. To engage with these service users, we set up a nurse-led telehealth facility that enabled young people with spina bifida to access specialist continence service from home. This article describes efforts to embed this innovation into practice and offer insight to some of the challenges we faced in the process. It offers practical guidance on setting up similar services.

Nurse practitioner-led hospital vascular access service: A quality improvement initiative.

INTRODUCTION: Internal quantitative assessments demonstrated that existing vascular access services (VASs) for the insertion of peripherally inserted central catheters were associated with delays in therapy initiation and hospital discharge, as well as heterogeneous complication rates. OBJECTIVES: Evidence suggests that more structured services may improve these outcomes. The aim of this quality improvement initiative was to implement and evaluate a nurse practitioner (NP)-led, hospital-wide VAS to standardise the insertion of peripherally inserted central venous catheters. METHODS: After co

School Nurse Practices Related to Blood Pressure Screening, and Identification and Monitoring of High Blood Pressures in Youth.

Despite rising prevalence of high blood pressure among youth, literature on school nurses' practices related to youth blood pressure is limited. We aimed to describe school nurses' current practices related to blood pressure screening and identification and monitoring of high blood pressures. We conducted a web-based national survey of currently practicing school nurses and received 195 responses across 37 states. All participants reported having a blood pressure cuff, nearly all (98%) reported confidence measuring children's blood pressure, and 82% reported interest in doing more to support c

An exploratory cost-effectiveness analysis: Comparison between a midwife-led birth unit and a standard obstetric unit within the same hospital in Belgium.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare midwife-led and consultant-led obstetrical care for women with uncomplicated low-risk pregnancies. We estimated costs and maternal outcomes in both units to achieve a cost-effectiveness ratio. DESIGN: The cost-analysis was made according to the "intention to treat" concept in order to minimize bias associated with the non-randomization of participants. At the obstetric-led unit, women received care from both midwives and medical staff while those in the alternative structure called 'Le Cocon' only received care from midwives. SETTING: The

Medical Abortion in Midwifery Scope of Practice: A Qualitative Exploration of the Attitudes of Registered Midwives in British Columbia.

INTRODUCTION: Across Canada and internationally, access to abortion remains challenging, particularly for those living in rural and remote communities. International research and policy call for the training of advanced practice clinicians, including midwives, to provide abortion services to fill the ever-increasing access gap. Research in other jurisdictions has examined the attitudes of midwives toward this potential expansion of scope of practice, but such studies have not been undertaken in British Columbia. This qualitative research study explored the attitudes of registered midwives towa

Recruiting and retaining men in nursing: a review of the literature.

A review of literature published primarily since 1980 was conducted to identify (1) historical events that have influenced the sex imbalance in the nursing workforce, (2) the existence and types of barriers affecting the recruitment of male nurses, and (3) feasible strategies that might form the basis of intervention studies in the future. Nursing continues to be undervalued as an end-point career by some, and most potential candidates lack exposure to male nurses and nursing in general. Family resistance and salary remain concerns, but they may be as important a deterrent for some women as fo
