Born This Way: Individuality Is Seeded Before Birth and Robust to Ecological Stress.

Behavioural individuality is widespread, yet its developmental origins are unclear. We subjected clonal individuals to a critical ecological challenge-the threat of predation-to disentangle the developmental mechanisms of individuality. Predation may erode or amplify among-individual differences, demonstrating that individuality is developmentally plastic. If individuality is instead determined before birth, it should resist environmental influences. We tracked behaviours of genetically identical fish (Amazon mollies), reared with or without predation stress, continuously from birth for 4 week

The nightscape of the Arctic winter shapes the diving behavior of a marine predator.

Predator-prey interactions in marine ecosystems are dynamically influenced by light, as demonstrated by diel vertical migrations of low-trophic level organisms. At high latitudes, the long winter nights can provide foraging opportunities for marine predators targeting vertically migrating prey closer to the surface at night. However, there is limited documentation of such diel patterns in marine predators under extreme light regimes. To address this, we recorded the diving behavior of 17 harbour porpoises just south of the Arctic circle in West Greenland, from summer to winter. Unlike classica

Large sensory volumes enable Southern elephant seals to exploit sparse deep-sea prey.

The ability of echolocating toothed whales to detect and classify prey at long ranges enables efficient searching and stalking of sparse prey in these time-limited dives. However, nonecholocating deep-diving seals such as elephant seals appear to have much less sensory advantage over their prey. Both elephant seals and their prey rely on visual and hydrodynamic cues that may be detectable only at short ranges in the deep ocean, leading us to hypothesize that elephant seals must adopt a less efficient reactive mode of hunting that requires high prey densities. To test that hypothesis, we deploy

Great spotted cuckoo nestlings have no antipredatory effect on magpie or carrion crow host nests in southern Spain.

Host defences against cuckoo parasitism and cuckoo trickeries to overcome them are a classic example of antagonistic coevolution. Recently it has been reported that this relationship may turn to be mutualistic in the case of the carrion crow (Corvus corone) and its brood parasite, the great spotted cuckoo (Clamator glandarius), given that experimentally and naturally parasitized nests were depredated at a lower rate than non-parasitized nests. This result was interpreted as a consequence of the antipredatory properties of a fetid cloacal secretion produced by cuckoo nestlings, which presumably

Feeding ecology informs parasite epidemiology: prey selection modulates encounter rate with Echinococcus multilocularis in urban coyotes.

We investigated the role of urban coyote feeding ecology in the transmission of Echinococcus multilocularis, the causative agent of Alveolar Echinococcosis in humans. As coyotes can play a main role in the maintenance of this zoonotic parasite within North American urban settings, such study can ultimately aid disease risk management. Between June 2012 and June 2013, we collected 251 coyote feces and conducted trapping of small mammals (n = 971) in five parks in the city of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We investigated E. multilocularis epidemiology by assessing seasonal variations of coyote diet

Bony outgrowths on the jaws of an extinct sperm whale support macroraptorial feeding in several stem physeteroids.

Several extinct sperm whales (stem Physeteroidea) were recently proposed to differ markedly in their feeding ecology from the suction-feeding modern sperm whales Kogia and Physeter. Based on cranial, mandibular, and dental morphology, these Miocene forms were tentatively identified as macroraptorial feeders, able to consume proportionally large prey using their massive teeth and robust jaws. However, until now, no corroborating evidence for the use of teeth during predation was available. We report on a new specimen of the stem physeteroid Acrophyseter, from the late middle to early late Mioce

Trophic specialisation in a predatory group: the case of prey-specialised spiders (Araneae).

Predators appear to be less frequently specialised (i.e. adapted to restricted diet) on their prey than herbivores, parasites or parasitoids. Here, we critically evaluate contemporary evolutionary hypotheses that might be used to explain the evolution of specialised foraging in predators. We propose a unifying concept within which we define four types of trophic categories using ecological (diet breadth) and evolutionary (degree of adaptations) contexts. We use data on spiders (Araneae), the most diversified order of terrestrial predators, to assess applicability of frameworks and evolutionary

An experimental evaluation of the influence of water depth and bottom color on the Common kingfisher's foraging performance.

To investigate how depth and bottom color affect prey selectivity in Common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), we developed several experimental procedures using captive birds. We used 20 young kingfishers to test depth (25 or 50cm) and color (natural gravel or white) effects on foraging behavior. Live freshwater fish were used as target prey. To assess differences resulting from the natural behavior of different fish, we chose bottom-dwelling [Ebro barbel (Barbus graellsii)] and open-water benthopelagic species [Ebro nase (Parachondrostoma miegii) and Pyrenean minnow (Phoxinus bigerri)]. The number

Is the red spotted green frog Hypsiboas punctatus (Anura: Hylidae) selecting its preys? The importance of prey availability.

The study of the feeding ecology of amphibians is an old issue in herpetology. Notwithstanding, the lack of food resources data in many studies of amphibians feeding has lead to partial understanding of frog feeding strategies. In this study we evaluate the trophic selectivity of a red spotted green frog (Hypsiboas punctatus) population from a Middle Paraná River floodplain pond in Argentina, and discuss the importance of prey availability data when interpreting results from diet analysis. We analyzed the gut contents of 47 H. punctatus adults and compared frog's diet with the environmental fo

Why does the yellow-eyed Ensatina have yellow eyes? Batesian mimicry of Pacific newts (genus Taricha) by the salamander Ensatina eschscholtzii xanthoptica.

Color patterns commonly vary geographically within species, but it is rare that such variation corresponds with divergent antipredator strategies. The polymorphic salamander Ensatina eschscholtzii, however, may represent such a case. In this species, most subspecies are cryptically colored, whereas E. e. xanthoptica, the Yellow eyed ensatina, is hypothesized to be an aposematic mimic of highly toxic Pacific newts (genus Taricha). To test the mimicry hypothesis, we conducted feeding trials using Western Scrub-Jays, Aphelocoma californica. In every feeding trial, we found that jays, following pr

Biological control of Biomphalaria tenagophila (Mollusca, Planorbidae), a schistosomiasis vector, using the fish Geophagus brasiliensis (Pisces, Cichlidae) in the laboratory or in a seminatural environment.

In order to investigate a possible method of biological control of schistosomiasis, we used the fish Geophagus brasiliensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) which is widely distributed throughout Brazil, to interrupt the life cycle of the snail Biomphalaria tenagophila (Orbigny, 1835), an intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni. In the laboratory, predation eliminated 97.6% of the smaller snails (3-8 mm shell diameter) and 9.2% of the larger ones (12-14 mm shell diameter). Very promising results were also obtained in a seminatural environment. Studies of this fish in natural snail habitats should be fu

Reef fish escape responses selectively match predator attack speeds.

Animals must continually balance foraging with the risk of predation. In complex natural environments, this means quickly distinguishing between threats and harmless situations. We investigated how site-associated coral reef fishes escape in response to visual cues mimicking predator attacks, using controlled underwater presentations of looming stimuli at varying speeds. We measured escape responses across species and social contexts, and compared them to predator attack speeds observed in the same habitat. Escape probability increased sharply with the speed of the looming stimulus, with no re

Do insect food-derived ecdysteroids appear in the blood of waterfowl, predatory birds, carnivorous mammals and primates?

Arthropod molting hormones, the so-called ecdysteroids were experimentally shown to have anabolic effects in higher vertebrates, promoting energy supply, protein synthesis, and tissue growth. Insectivorous songbirds (Aves: Passeriformes) and bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) were demonstrated to have naturally acquired ecdysteroids in their blood. However, it is not known if partly insectivorous or artificially insect-fed vertebrates would also have ecdysteroids in their circulation. The aim of this screening study was to clarify this, by collecting blood samples of mammals, birds and reptiles that

Smilodon sabertooth bite marks, new perspectives on prey-predator models in South American Pleistocene.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, saber-toothed cats, particularly species of the genus Smilodon, were considered unable to bite through bones due to the apparent fragility of their teeth. We analyze here megafauna fossil remains of Salto de Piedra palaeontological site (Humid Pampas), one of the few extensively radiometrically dated Pleistocene sites in Argentina and systematically excavated. Salto de Piedra is located near contemporary human occupation sites that have yielded megafauna remains. This spatial and chronological proximity provides an exceptional scenario to compare the prey ranges hunt

Quantifying the success of prey crypsis, aposematism, and evasiveness in avoiding predator attack.

Antipredator defenses typically act at distinct stages of the predation sequence-encounter, identification, approach, and subjugation. However, their effectiveness has rarely been quantified and compared simultaneously in wild predator-prey systems. We conducted a study in Peru, where we installed aviaries at two localities and recorded the responses of wild avian predators to three types of antipredator defenses-crypsis, aposematism, and evasiveness-expressed by three butterfly prey types. The study included both immature and adult birds from forest and urban environments, representing the pr

Sound production by hawkmoth larvae and pupae through abdominal spiracles.

Some insect species produce defensive sounds across developmental stages. To test whether the characteristics, organs and mechanisms of sound production differ across stages within a single species, we examined how larvae and pupae of Phyllosphingia dissimilis (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) produce sounds in response to simulated predator attacks via tactile stimulation. Laboratory experiments showed that final-instar larvae produce sound pulses (dominant frequency: 9.2-12.9 kHz; sound pressure level: 50.2-62.4 dB SPL) by expelling air through the pair of eighth abdominal (A8) spiracles, whereas pu

From the distributions of times of interactions to preys and predators dynamical systems.

We consider a stochastic individual based model where each predator searches and then manipulates its prey or rests during random times. The time distributions may be non-exponential and density dependent. An age structure allows to describe these interactions and get a Markovian setting. The process is characterized by a measure-valued stochastic differential equation. We prove averaging results in this infinite dimensional setting and get the convergence of the slow-fast macroscopic prey predator process to a two dimensional dynamical system. We recover classical functional responses. We als

Comparative and experimental studies on the relationship between body size and countershading in caterpillars.

Countershading is a gradient of colouration in which the illuminated dorsal surfaces are darker than the unilluminated ventral surface. It is widespread in the animal kingdom and endows the body with a more uniform colour to decrease the chance of detection by predators. Although recent empirical studies support the theory of survival advantage conferred by countershading, this camouflage strategy has evolved only in some of the cryptic animals, and our understanding of the factors that affect the evolution of countershading is limited. This study examined the association between body size and

Malformed trilobites from the Cambrian, Ordovician, and Silurian of Australia.

Biomineralised remains of trilobites provide important insight into the evolutionary history of a diverse, extinct group of arthropods. Their exoskeletons are also ideal for recording malformations, including evidence of post-injury repair. Re-examination of historic collections and the study of new specimens is important for enhancing knowledge on trilobite malformations across this diverse clade. To expand the records of these abnormalities and present explanations for their formation, we document eight malformed trilobite specimens, as well as one carcass, housed within the Commonwealth Pal

Biocontrol of snail-borne parasites with the glossiphoniid leech, Helobdella austinensis.

Parasites in which freshwater snails are intermediate hosts pose a serious threat to human health worldwide. We show here that freshwater snails can potentially be controlled by leech predation; in principle, this approach could significantly reduce snail-borne parasitic diseases (SBPDs). Specifically, glossiphoniid leeches, Helobdella austinensis and congener species, consume freshwater snails indiscriminately, while other common leeches do not. A single adult H. austenensis, for example, can consume up to its weight in snails, e.g. Physella acuta, per day. Our predator-prey models suggest th
