Cognitive findings after transient global amnesia: role of prefrontal cortex.

The aim of this study is to verify, after recovery, the presence of specific patterns of cognitive dysfunctions in Transient Global Amnesia (TGA). Fourteen patients with the diagnosis of TGA were submitted to a battery of neuropsychological tests and compared to a matched control group. We found significant qualitative and quantitative differences between TGA patients and controls in the California Verbal Learning Test (CLVT) and Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test. Our data support the presence of selective cognitive dysfunctions after the clinical recovery. Moreover, for Verbal Fluency, Digit

Synchronized activity in prefrontal cortex during anticipation of visuomotor processing.

It is commonly presumed, though not well established, that the prefrontal cortex exerts top-down control of sensory processing. One aspect of this control is thought to be a facilitation of sensory pathways in anticipation of such processing. To investigate the possible involvement of prefrontal cortex in anticipatory top-down control, we studied the statistical relations between prefrontal activity, recorded while a macaque monkey waited for presentation of a visual stimulus, and subsequent sensory and motor events. Local field potentials were simultaneously recorded from prefrontal, motor, o

Subthreshold prefrontal repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation reduces motor cortex excitability.

The prefrontal cortex plays an important role in central motor control. We have examined whether prefrontal repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) induces changes of motor cortex excitability determined by motor evoked potentials (MEPs) following single-pulse TMS. We studied 18 healthy volunteers stimulated at 5 Hz with 10% subthreshold prefrontal vs. occipital rTMS for 12 s. MEPs from the flexor carpi radialis muscle after single-pulse vertex stimulation were recorded during rTMS at 0, 4, 8, and 12 s. MEP areas decreased significantly after 8 s of prefrontal rTMS (P < 0. 05) but

Prefrontal cortex dysfunction in Borna disease virus (BDV)--infected rats.

Viruses have been proposed to play a role in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia; however, the mechanisms by which infection could cause the affective, cognitive, and movement disorders of schizophrenia are not understood. The neurotropic RNA virus, Borna disease (BD) virus, linked to schizophrenia by serologic studies, causes movement and behavior disorders in a wide variety of mammalian and bird hosts. BD rats have hyperactivity and stereotyped behaviors similar to those that follow neurotoxic or electrolytic lesions in frontal cortex or its catecholamine afferents in rats. BD rats have high l

Lower cerebrovascular reactivity in prefrontal cortex and weaker negative functional connectivity between prefrontal cortex and insula contribute to white matter hyperintensity-related anxiety or depression.

BACKGROUND: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are associated with higher anxiety or depression (A/D) incidence. We investigated associations of WMHs with A/D, cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR), and functional connectivity (FC) to identify potential pathomechanisms. METHODS: Participants with WMH (n = 239) and normal controls (NCs, n = 327) were assessed for A/D using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD). The CVR and FC maps were constructed from resting-state functional MRI. Two-way analysis of covariance with fixed factors A/D and WMH was per

Activation of the prefrontal cortex and posterior parietal cortex increases the recognition of semantic violations in action representation.

BACKGROUND: The correct outcome of transitive actions depends on an object's use, considering both the instrumental and functional features. Indeed, the representation of transitive action includes the correct/incorrect instrumental use and the congruous/incongruous functional use of the object. OBJECTIVES: The contribution of frontal (experiment 1) and posterior parietal (experiment 2) areas to process semantic violations in instrumental vs. functional action representation was explored. METHODS: These cortical areas were appositely modulated by anodal tDCS (transcranial direct current stim

Distinct Causal Influences of Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex and Posterior Parietal Cortex in Multiple-Option Decision Making.

Our knowledge about neural mechanisms underlying decision making is largely based on experiments that involved few options. However, it is more common in daily life to choose between many options, in which processing choice information selectively is particularly important. The current study examined whether the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC) are of particular importance to multiple-option decision making. Sixty-eight participants received anodal high definition-transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) to focally enhance dlPFC or PPC in a do

Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation increases alpha absolute power in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and superior parietal cortex.

The physiotherapist's clinical practice includes proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), which is a treatment concept that accelerates the response of neuromuscular mechanisms through spiral and diagonal movements. The adaptations that occur in the nervous system following PNF are still poorly described in the literature. Thus, this study had a goal to investigate the electrophysiological changes in the fronto-parietal circuit during PNF and movement in sagittal and diagonal patterns. This study included 30 female participants, who were divided into three groups (control, PNF, and fle

From Cortex to Cardiac Response: tDCS of the Prefrontal Cortex Improves Autonomic Markers of Emotion Regulation.

Background: Emotion regulation (ER) plays a vital role in mental health, spanning mood, anxiety, and personality disorders. Cognitive reappraisal (CR) is one of the most common ER strategies and depends on prefrontal brain areas, but its success varies, and its neural basis is not fully clear. Interest is growing in using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to support ER, yet most studies have focused only on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and used simple tasks. Objective: This study explored whether tDCS applied to either the dlPFC or the ventromedial prefrontal cortex

Muscle and timing-specific functional connectivity between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the primary motor cortex.

The pFC has a crucial role in cognitive control, executive function, and sensory processing. Functional imaging, neurophysiological, and animal studies provide evidence for a functional connectivity between the dorsolateral pFC (DLPFC) and the primary motor cortex (M1) during free choice but not instructed choice selection tasks. In this study, twin coil, neuronavigated TMS was used to examine the precise timing of the functional interaction between human left DLPFC and ipsilateral M1 during the execution of a free/specified choice selection task involving the digits of the right hand. In a th

Bilateral lesions of the insular cortex or of the prefrontal cortex block the association between taste and odor in the rat.

The neural basis for the association between taste and odor was investigated in the rat. First, behavioral procedures to study the mechanisms underlying the association between qualitative aspects of the odor and taste in rats were developed. Rats were presented with several pairings of the 0.3 mol/L NaCl solution and a flavor, and pairings of distilled water and another flavor. Then the rats received an IP injection of a furosemide to develop sodium deficiency. On the next day, the rats were presented with either of two types of odor-flavored water: water in which the flavor had been paired w

Transitive inference reasoning is impaired by focal lesions in parietal cortex rather than rostrolateral prefrontal cortex.

Transitive inference reasoning involves the examination and comparison of a given number of relational pairs in order to understand overall group hierarchy (e.g., A>B, B>C, C>D; therefore is A>D?). A number of imaging studies have demonstrated the role of the parietal cortex for resolving transitive inferences. Some studies also identify the rostrolateral prefrontal cortex as being critical for "relational integration" processes supporting transitive reasoning. To clarify this issue, we carried out a transitive inference study involving neurological patients with focal lesions to the rostrolat

The prefrontal cortex outputs to the amygdala facilitate threat-discrimination learning.

The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) plays a significant role in modulating the threat response, particularly in ambiguous circumstances. The mPFC performs this role through its connectivity with multiple brain regions, including the amygdala, long regarded as the central hub for threat responses. However, the roles of specific prefrontal projections to the amygdala in contextual threat discrimination are not yet fully understood, particularly regarding more complex learning tasks and when disentangling the functionally distinct prelimbic (PL) subunit of the mPFC. Here, we challenged mice with

Impairment of the GABAergic system in the prefrontal cortex of male heroin addicts.

Opioid addiction is a global concern and the largest health burden among drug use disorders. Prefrontal cortex (PFC) regions play a key multifaceted role in behavioural regulation, and GABAergic interneurons regulate the output of the PFC, whose dysfunction has been linked to the behavioural abnormalities observed in opioid-addicted individuals. In these neurons, glutamate decarboxylase (GAD), with its isoforms GAD 65 and 67, is a key enzyme in the synthesis of GABA. Our study, which was performed on paraffin-embedded brains from the Magdeburg Brain Bank, aimed to investigate abnormalities in

A cognitive map for value-guided choice in ventromedial prefrontal cortex.

The prefrontal cortex is crucial for economic decision-making and representing the value of options. However, how such representations facilitate flexible decisions remains unknown. We reframe economic decision-making in prefrontal cortex in line with representations of structure within the medial temporal lobe because such cognitive map representations are known to facilitate flexible behaviour. Specifically, we framed choice between different options as a navigation process in value space. Here we show that choices in a 2D value space defined by reward magnitude and probability were represen

Amygdala subfield and prefrontal cortex abnormalities in patients with functional seizures.

BACKGROUND: Functional seizures (FS) are paroxysmal episodes, resembling epileptic seizures, but without underlying epileptic abnormality. The aetiology and neuroanatomic associations are incompletely understood. Recent brain imaging data indicate cerebral changes, however, without clarifying possible pathophysiology. In the present study, we specifically investigated the neuroanatomic changes in subregions of the amygdala and hippocampus in FS. METHODS: T1 MRI scans of 37 female patients with FS and 37 age-matched female seizure naïve controls (SNC) were analyzed retrospectively in FreeSurfe

Implicit threat learning involves the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the cerebellum.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Most studies investigating the neural correlates of threat learning were carried out using an explicit Pavlovian conditioning paradigm where declarative knowledge on contingencies between conditioned (CS) and unconditioned stimuli (US) is acquired. The current study aimed at understanding the neural correlates of threat conditioning when contingency awareness is limited or even absent. METHOD: We conducted an fMRI report of threat learning in an implicit associative learning paradigm called multi-CS conditioning, in which a number of faces were associated with aversive s

The Role of Medial Prefrontal Cortex in Acupuncture Treatment for Functional Dyspepsia.

Acupuncture is an effective therapy for functional dyspepsia (FD). However, the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of FD varies among individuals in clinical practice. This study aimed to reveal the brain response patterns in acupuncture higher response/lower response FD patients. Firstly, we performed a within-group comparison of brain function activity before and after acupuncture treatment in 115 FD patients and analyzed the correlation between brain function activity changes and clinical improvements. Secondly, 115 subjects were divided into the acupuncture higher response group or t

Memantine Attenuates Cocaine and neuroHIV Neurotoxicity in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex.

Individuals with substance use disorder are at a higher risk of contracting HIV and progress more rapidly to AIDS as drugs of abuse, such as cocaine, potentiate the neurotoxic effects of HIV-associated proteins including, but not limited to, HIV-1 trans-activator of transcription (Tat) and the envelope protein Gp120. Neurotoxicity and neurodegeneration are hallmarks of HIV-1-associated neurocognitive disorders (HANDs), which are hypothesized to occur secondary to excitotoxicity from NMDA-induced neuronal calcium dysregulation, which could be targeted with NMDA antagonist drugs. The role of dorsolateral and ventromedial prefrontal cortex in the processing of emotional dimensions.

The ventromedial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex are two major prefrontal regions that usually interact in serving different cognitive functions. On the other hand, these regions are also involved in cognitive processing of emotions but their contribution to emotional processing is not well-studied. In the present study, we investigated the role of these regions in three dimensions (valence, arousal and dominance) of emotional processing of stimuli via ratings of visual stimuli performed by the study participants on these dimensions. Twenty- two healthy adult participants (mean age 25.21 ±
