Prehabilitation: Who can benefit?

Prehabilitation is an intervention that occurs between cancer diagnosis and the start of an acute treatment. It involves physical, nutritional, and psychological assessments to establish a baseline functional level and provide targeted interventions to improve a person's health and prevent future impairments. Prehabilitation has been applied to surgical oncology and has shown positive results at improving functional capacity, reducing hospital stay, decreasing complications, and enhancing health-related quality of life. The importance of collaboration between various healthcare professionals a

Cardiopulmonary effects of closed repair of pectus excavatum.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Increasing numbers of patients with pectus excavatum defects are presenting for operative repair. Studies that follow-up with patients after open repair have found a decrease in pulmonary function with some improvement in cardiac output and exercise tolerance; however, these effects have not been examined systematically after closed or Nuss repair of pectus excavatum. This study examined the early postoperative effects of closed repair of pectus on pulmonary function, exercise tolerance, and cardiac function. METHODS: Patients were followed up prospectively after initial e

Prehabilitation for muscle wasting in cancer: do definitions matter?

Frailty in older patients with cancer has been associated with functional impairments, decline in quality of life, and increased risk of mortality. There is growing interest in prehabilitation interventions designed to optimize function prior to cancer treatment to mitigate functional decline and to optimize post-treatment outcomes. This review aims to describe the heterogeneity in muscle wasting definitions, modalities used for body composition analysis, and functional outcomes investigated in exercise prehabilitation trials in cancer patients. Defining muscle loss among patients with cancer

A single preoperative pain neuroscience education: Is it an effective strategy for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome?

Patients undergoing carpal tunnel release surgery may continue to experience pain despite the intervention. This symptom may be modulated by psychosocial factors including depression, catastrophic thinking, and kinesiophobia. Pain neuroscience education (PNE) has been found to be effective when combined with therapeutic exercise in patients with chronic pain, but this strategy has not been evaluated in patients with persistent hand pain. The findings of this study indicate that a single preoperative PNE session in combination with therapeutic exercise does not provide added benefits in compari

Rest and exercise hemodynamics before and after valve replacement--a combined Doppler/catheter study.

BACKGROUND: Hemodynamic improvement is a common finding following valve replacement. However, despite a normally functioning prosthesis and normal left ventricular ejection fraction, some patients may show an abnormal hemodynamic response to exercise. METHODS: In a combined catheter/Doppler study, rest and exercise hemodynamics were evaluated in 23 patients following aortic (n = 12) (Group 1) or mitral valve (n = 11) (Group 2) replacement and compared with preoperative findings. Patient selection was based on absence of coronary artery disease and left ventricular failure as shown by preopera

Exercise-induced immune response in breast cancer patients during prehabilitation, neoadjuvant or adjuvant treatment: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adjuvant and neoadjuvant treatment for breast cancer (BC) such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy can lead to immune system impairment. Exercise is hypothesized to mitigate these effects by modulating immune responses and reducing chronic inflammation. This review aims to summarize the existing evidence on the impact of physical exercise on inflammatory markers and cellular immune function in patients with BC during prehabilitation, adjuvant or neoadjuvant treatment. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus and Embase to identify random
