This experimental study was designed to identify the etiology of pressure ulcers in a surgical sample and to evaluate a special OR mattress overlay in preventing pressure ulcer development. Surgical patients (N = 413) were randomized to receive "usual perioperative care" or the new mattress overlay. Over six postoperative days, 89 patients (21.5%) developed pressure ulcers, primarily stage I. Only 2% developed stage II or IV ulcers. Patients with ulcers were statistically older, had diabetes, were smaller in body mass, had lower Braden Scale scores on admission, and used the new mattress overl

A questionnaire mailed to all 2,295 members of the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association measured 45 potential risk factors for pressure ulcers. Logistic-regression analysis and Cox proportional-hazards analyses were used to identify the variables that were independently associated with pressure ulcers. The survey response rate was 42.2%. Among 15 risk factors from a previously published scale by the authors, 7 were independent predictors of pressure ulcer development: level of activity, level of mobility, complete spinal cord injury, urine incontinence or moisture, autonomic dysreflexia, pul

Pressure ulcer development is a serious problem occurring predominately among elderly persons, who are confined to bed or chair. Factors associated with pressure ulcer development include: cerebrovascular accident, impaired nutritional intake, fecal incontinence, lymphocytopenia and a high comorbidity score. Implementation of preventative measures, such as: in-depth assessment for mobility, a pressure relieving device combined with adequate repositioning, thorough evaluation for nutritional status and urinary incontinence, significantly reduce pressure ulcer incidence. If the pressure ulcer is

Using a multi-wire surface electrode, oxygen pressure fields were determined in leg ulcers of 11 patients with chronic venous insufficiency (cvi). In three of them, cvi was combined with arterial occlusive disease. The histograms of all patients with very low PO2 values revealed microcirculatory disturbances of the ulcer tissue. The influence of leg position is reflected in the histograms. Patients with cvi showed higher PO2 values when the leg was raised in comparison with when it was in the hanging position. The patients with mixed ulcerations showed a significant increase in tissue PO2 when

Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a rare X-linked disease that affects the metabolism of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs), leading to cognitive deterioration, progressive spastic paraplegia, sensory disturbance, adrenocortical insufficiency, and bladder and bowel abnormalities. Although the symptoms of ALD correspond to the risk of developing pressure ulcers, a pressure ulcer has never been listed as a complication of ALD. We present two cases of ALD with severe pressure ulcers in the pelvic region and feet. The first case was a 27-year-old male patient with adolescent cerebral-type ALD who ha

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers (also known as pressure injuries, pressure sores, decubitus ulcers and bed sores) are localised injuries to the skin or underlying soft tissue, or both, caused by unrelieved pressure, shear or friction. Beds, overlays or mattresses are widely used with the aim of treating pressure ulcers.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of beds, overlays and mattresses on pressure ulcer healing in people with pressure ulcers of any stage, in any setting.
SEARCH METHODS: In November 2019, we searched the Cochrane Wounds Specialised Register; the Cochrane Central Register of Contr

The aim of this study was to identify and characterise the association between the prevalence of pressure ulcers, spasticity levels, and advanced dementia in disable elderly patients. Data were obtained from the patient medical files. Patients were hospitalised in the geriatric skilled nursing department. A total of 40 frail elderly patients, bedbound and suffering from advanced chronic diseases, advanced dementia, and high-grade pressure ulcers, were examined. Pressure ulcer grades and spasticity in advanced dementia versus non-dementia patients were evaluated. Logistic regression indicated t

The current theoretical investigation aimed to explore common pathophysiological mechanisms underlying dementia and pressure ulcers (PU). Along with the increased longevity, especially in frail elderly patients, there is a higher rate of functional and cognitive impairment with dementia coinciding with immobility, which results in a higher rate of PU. Understanding common etiological paths resulting in pressure ulcers and dementia is likely to produce new treatment strategies that could lead to the prevention of comorbid complications. Data collected from elderly dementia patients indicate a d

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, decubitus ulcers and pressure injuries, are localised areas of injury to the skin or the underlying tissue, or both. Dressings are widely used to treat pressure ulcers and promote healing, and there are many options to choose from including alginate, hydrocolloid and protease-modulating dressings. Topical agents have also been used as alternatives to dressings in order to promote healing.A clear and current overview of all the evidence is required to facilitate decision-making regarding the use of dressings or topical agents for the treatmen

There are many remedies that have been recommended for the treatment of foul odor associated with pressure ulcers. This article seeks to review the literature surrounding the use of metronidazole as a safe and effective solution to an oftentimes stubborn and frustrating problem. Other tools used to control odor include bleach-based solutions and charcoal dressings. Metronidazole, with its antianaerobic properties, appears to have a useful role in therapy when applied topically to a pressure ulcer. Commercially available products include 0.75% and 1% creams, gels, lotions, and intravenous solut

Undernutrition has been associated with pressure ulcers in epidemiological studies over several decades. Accumulating evidence from recent systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials has shown that nutrition therapy has only modest effects on prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers. Since undernutrition should be responsive to the provision of adequate nutrients, the poor response suggests a different nutrition construct is required. Weight loss and changes in acute inflammatory reactants may reflect the syndrome of cachexia rather than simple undernutrition. Nutrition prescription

Atypical pressure ulcers (APU) are distinguished from common pressure ulcers (PU) with both unusual location and different aetiology. The occurrence and attempts to characterise APU remain unrecognised. The purpose of this cohort study was to analyse the occurrence of atypical location and the circumstances of the causation, and draw attention to the prevention and treatment by a multidisciplinary team. The cohort study spanned three and a half years totalling 174 patients. The unit incorporates two weekly combined staff meetings. One concentrates on wound assessment with treatment decisions m

Risk and incidence of pressure ulcers (PUs) in the burn population remain poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to determine the timing and incidence of PUs at our regional burn center and to identify early risk factors for PU development in burn patients. A retrospective review of 40 charts was performed from among the 1489 patients admitted to our regional burn center between January 2008 and December 2009. Twenty patients acquired PUs during their admission and were identified on the basis of International Classification of Diseases, ninth revision, designation, hospital stay >7
