Three-dimensional (3D) printing refers to the process by which physical objects are built by depositing materials in layers based on a specific digital design. It was initially used in manufacture industry. Inspired by the technology, clinicians have recently attempted to integrate 3D printing into medical applications. One of the medical specialties that has recently made such attempt is cardiology, especially in the field of structural heart disease (SHD). SHD refers to a group of non-coronary cardiovascular disorders and related interventions. Obvious examples are aortic stenosis, mitral re

The rigid gas permeable contact lens (RGPCL) is an ideal choice to improve the corrective vision of patients with a high degree of refractive error, keratoconus and corneal transplantation. However, RGPCL fitting is not an easy work for those patients with extremely irregular corneal surface. Technicians or doctors often need to try many times to determine the relatively satisfied lens customization parameters. This repeated try-on process not only increases discomfort of patients, but also will increase the risks of corneal epithelial shedding or corneal infection. In order to conduct RGP fit

Artificial teeth have several advantages in preclinical training. The aim of this study is to three-dimensionally (3D) print accurate artificial teeth using scans from X-ray microtomography (XMT). Extracted and artificial teeth were imaged at 90 kV and 40 kV, respectively, to create detailed high contrast scans. The dataset was visualised to produce internal and external meshes subsequently exported to 3D modelling software for modification before finally sending to a slicing program for printing. After appropriate parameter setting, the printer deposited material in specific locations layer b

INTRODUCTION: Surgical correction of frontoethmoidal meningoencephalocele, although rare, is still challenging to neurosurgeons and plastic reconstructive surgeons. It is fundamental to establish reliable and safe surgical techniques. The twenty-first century has brought great advances in medical technology, and the 3D models can mimic the correct tridimensional anatomical relation of a tissue organ or body part. They allow both tactile and spatial understanding of the lesion and organ involved. The 3D printing technology allows the preparation for specific surgery ahead of time, planning the

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is suitable for the fabrication of complex radiotherapy bolus. Although investigated from dosimetric and feasibility standpoints, there are few reports to date of its use for actual patient treatment. This study illustrates the versatile applications of 3D printing in clinical radiation oncology through a selection of patient cases, namely, to create bolus for photon and modulated electron radiotherapy (MERT), as well as applicators for surface high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy. Photon boluses were 3D-printed to treat a recurrent squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) o

The field of tissue engineering is advancing steadily, partly due to advancements in rapid prototyping technology. Even with increasing focus, successful complex tissue regeneration of vascularized bone, cartilage and the osteochondral interface remains largely illusive. This review examines current three-dimensional printing techniques and their application towards bone, cartilage and osteochondral regeneration. The importance of, and benefit to, nanomaterial integration is also highlighted with recent published examples. Early-stage successes and challenges of recent studies are discussed, w

This study investigates the effect of 3D printing speed on the mechanical strength of parts produced with high-speed PLA. Samples were tested according to the ISO 527-1 standard, focusing on tensile strength. The results reveal that increasing the print speed from 30 mm/s to 500 mm/s reduces the mechanical strength of the samples, although the difference is minimal and does not affect the surface quality when the material is appropriately selected. Additionally, the orientation of the samples on the build plate had a significant impact on their strength, with samples printed along the Y-axis e

Regenerating large bone defects remains a significant clinical challenge, motivating increased interest in additive manufacturing and 3D bioprinting to engineer superior bone graft substitutes. 3D bioprinting enables different biomaterials, cell types, and growth factors to be combined to develop patient-specific implants capable of directing functional bone regeneration. Current approaches to bioprinting such implants fall into one of two categories, each with their own advantages and limitations. First are those that can be 3D bioprinted and then directly implanted into the body and second t

Post-printing drying conditions could affect the quality of oral use printlets elaborated by semi-solid extrusion (SSE) 3D printing, yet their systematic characterization as Critical Process Parameters (CPPs) remains limited. This study evaluated the influence of temperature (20-40°C) and relative humidity (20-80%) on acetazolamide printlets drying process using a full factorial design (n = 27). Response variables included weight stabilization time (the time required for the batch to complete drying, operationally defined as achieving constant weight), disintegration time, dissolution profile,

This study aimed to identify the optimal printing orientation (X, Y, or Z axis) and positioning of a mandibular molar presenting an isthmus using PolyJet™ technology. The influence of these parameters on dimensional accuracy and on the behavior of 3D-printed teeth (3DPT) during endodontic preparation with ProTaper Gold® system was evaluated. Six groups (XA, XB, YA, YB, ZA, ZB; n = 10) were printed with different axis orientations and distinct isthmus positions relative to the build platform. All samples underwent micro-computed tomography scanning before and after endodontic preparation. Regar

BACKGROUND: Recently, dentists can utilize three-dimensional printing technology in fabricating dental restoration. However, to date, there is a lack of evidence regarding the effect of printing layer thicknesses and postprinting on the mechanical properties of the 3D-printed temporary restorations with the additive manufacturing technique. So, this study evaluated the mechanical properties of a 3D-printed dental resin material with different printing layer thicknesses and postprinting methods.
METHODS: 210 specimens of a temporary crown material (A2 EVERES TEMPORARY, SISMA, Italy) were 3D-pr

The future of printing cannot be understood as the evolution of another manufacturing tool. Rather, it points to a science-driven paradigm in which functional matter is designed, formed, and integrated through controlled physicochemical events. In this visionary article, we look back to show how advances in nonlinear photochemistry, nanoscale heat transport, capillary flow, electrohydrodynamics, and liquid metal interfacial science have matured into powerful printing platforms, exampling two-photon polymerization, meniscus-guided printing, and liquid metal electronics. These histories reveal t
