Does the Flipped Classroom Improve Learning in Graduate Medical Education?

BACKGROUND: The flipped classroom model for didactic education has recently gained popularity in medical education; however, there is a paucity of performance data showing its effectiveness for knowledge gain in graduate medical education. OBJECTIVE: We assessed whether a flipped classroom module improves knowledge gain compared with a standard lecture. METHODS: We conducted a randomized crossover study in 3 emergency medicine residency programs. Participants were randomized to receive a 50-minute lecture from an expert educator on one subject and a flipped classroom module on the other. The

Efficient artificial intelligence-based assessment of the gastroesophageal valve with Hill classification through active learning.

Standardized assessment of the gastroesophageal valve during endoscopy, attainable via the Hill classification, is important for clinical assessment and therapeutic decision making. The Hill classification is associated with the presence of hiatal hernia (HH), a common endoscopic finding connected to gastro-esophageal reflux disease. A novel efficient medical artificial intelligence (AI) training pipeline using active learning (AL) is designed. We identified 21,970 gastroscopic images as training data and used our AL to train a model for predicting the Hill classification and detecting HH. Per

Capturing learning from public involvement with people experiencing homelessness to help shape new physiotherapy research: Utilizing a reflective model with an under-served, vulnerable population.

INTRODUCTION: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) have poorer health than housed people but face barriers accessing care and being involved in research. As an often-ignored group, their contribution to help shape research that is for and about them is essential, as it can strengthen the research proposal, in turn facilitating research and outcomes that are relevant to this vulnerable group. METHODS: Six people with experience of homelessness attended a PPI consultation aided by Pathway, a UK homeless peer advocacy charity, which coordinates an 'Experts by Experience' group. The patient with acute paraplegia: a problem-based review.

Acute paraplegia is an emergency requiring immediate assessment by the acute medical team because of the need to rule out compressive lesions of the cord. Early intervention may preserve neurological spinal function and limit persistent disability. In addition, acute paraplegia may be complicated by life-threatening problems. These require prompt recognition and treatment. The following clinical scenario, based on a real case of acute paraplegia managed by the authors is aimed at providing a problem-based approach to the management of patients presenting with acute paraplegic weakness.

Student critical thinking is enhanced by developing exercise prescriptions using online learning modules.

Developing the ability to think critically is an important element of undergraduate physiology education and is influenced by many factors, including the learning environment, the social context of the learning environment, and the instructor's approach to teaching. In this work, we describe online learning modules (OLM) that were designed to promote higher-order critical thinking skills in students enrolled in an upper-division Exercise Testing and Prescription course. The OLM provided students with an online learning environment in which to review clinical physiological details from authenti

Variation in Students' Experiences and Approaches to Learning During Early Clinical Immersion.

INTRODUCTION: Emphasis is being placed on producing intern-ready graduates who can navigate complex clinical environments. Early clinical immersion seeks to enable this through experiential learning and supported participation in authentic workplaces; however, its educational value remains intangible. Studies have evaluated placement objectives but not other effects in detail. We explored novice students' experiences and approaches to learning during early clinical immersion and factors that enhanced or hindered them. METHODS: Medical students at the beginning of their second year undertook 8

Feedback produces divergence from prospect theory in descriptive choice.

A recent study demonstrated that individuals making experience-based choices underweight small probabilities, in contrast to the overweighting observed in a typical descriptive paradigm. We tested whether trial-by-trial feedback in a repeated descriptive paradigm would engender choices more correspondent with experiential or descriptive paradigms. The results of a repeated gambling task indicated that individuals receiving feedback underweighted small probabilities, relative to their no-feedback counterparts. These results implicate feedback as a critical component during the decision-making p

Enhancing higher-order thinking in a pharmacy physiology course through game-based, collaborative instructional workshop.

Active learning strategies are increasingly recognized for their role in improving long-term retention and higher-order thinking in health professions education. In this study, we evaluated the impact of replacing a traditional labeling lab with a team-based, game-oriented instructional workshop (IW) session on student learning in a first-year pharmacy physiology course, specifically focused on the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The intervention was grounded in three core physiological concepts: structure-function relationships, cell-cell communication, and interdependence. The 2-h IW session

Online case-based learning to enhance pediatric endocrinology resident education.

BACKGROUND: While much of medical resident trainee exposure to pediatric endocrinology is geared towards hospital-based management of hyperglycemic urgencies and emergencies, the American Board of Pediatrics certification exam and trends within pediatric endocrinology referrals require an understanding of more nuanced aspects of the endocrine system that include abnormalities of growth, puberty, sexual differentiation, and the thyroid gland, which are less often encountered in emergency, inpatient, and critical care settings. Challenges in medical education include increased direct faculty sup
