Deficits in information processing speed (IPS) are among the earliest and most prominent cognitive manifestations in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). We investigated the impact of white matter fiber location on IPS outcome in an individual basis assessment. A total of 112 acute mild TBI with all CT negative underwent brain DTI and blood sampling for inflammation cytokines within 7 days postinjury and 72 age- and sex matched healthy controls with same assessments were enrolled. IPS outcome was assessed by the trail making test at 6-12 month postinjury in mild TBI. Fractional anisotropy (FA)

Delayed Information Processing Speed (IPS) often underlies attention deficits and is particularly evident in patients with traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, depression, dementia, and multiple sclerosis. Therefore, it is of interest to determine the brain network that is responsible for such essential cognitive function to understand IPS deficits and to develop effective rehabilitation programs. We assessed brain functional connectivity and effective connectivity during the performance of an adapted version of the Symbol Digit Modalities Test. Using dynamic causal modeling, we focuse

OBJECTIVE: Disturbances in functional connectivity have been suggested to contribute to cognitive and emotion processing deficits observed in bipolar disorder (BD). Functional connectivity between medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and other brain regions may be particularly abnormal. The goal of the present study was to characterize the temporal dynamics of the default mode network (DMN) connectivity in BD and examine its association with cognition.
METHOD: In a preliminary study, euthymic BD (n = 15) and healthy comparison (HC, n = 19) participants underwent resting-state functional MRI, using

The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii (TOXO) infection in schizophrenia (SCZ) is elevated compared to controls (odds ratio=2.73). TOXO infection is associated with psychomotor slowing in rodents and non-psychiatric humans. Latency of the acoustic startle response, an index of neural processing speed, is the time it takes for a startling stimulus to elicit the reflexive response through a three-synapse subcortical circuit. We report a significant slowing of latency in TOXO seropositive SCZ vs. seronegative SCZ, and in TOXO seropositive controls vs. seronegative controls. Latency was likewise slow

BACKGROUND: The Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale-12 (MSWS-12) has been a commonly used patient reported outcome for measuring walking impairment in research involving multiple sclerosis (MS).
OBJECTIVE: We examined the possibility that cognitive processing speed (CPS) influences the association between MSWS-12 scores and other measures of ambulation (i.e., construct validity).
METHODS: 96 MS patients completed the MSWS-12, underwent a neurological examination for generating an Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score, and completed the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), Timed 25-Foot

This study investigated whether the rate at which children with delayed language process auditory stimuli can be increased through a process of shaping with synthesized speech stimuli. Results indicate that stimuli with slowed down critical formant cues were easier for these 24 children with delayed language to discriminate and that training with stimuli of extended duration did generalize to stimuli of normal durations. Implications of these findings and usefulness of this methodology are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Although the neurological sequelae of severe COVID-19 are increasingly recognized, the long-term neural impact of uncomplicated mild SARS-CoV-2 infection remains insufficiently characterized. This study investigated post-infection alterations in piriform cortex activity, a region central to olfactory processing and integrative cognitive-emotional networks, and their associations with cognitive outcomes in adults.
METHODS: Fifty adults with pre- and post-SARS-CoV-2 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical/neuropsychological data were analyzed. A demographically matched control

High-speed flow visualization provides imaging data containing quantitative information about cavitating-flow dynamics. Accurate determination of attached-cavity length is essential for characterizing cavitation regimes and validating mathematical models. In this study, an advanced image-processing algorithm for semi-automated analysis of cavitation patterns near hydrofoils is proposed. High-speed visualization data obtained for cavitating flow around a NACA0012 hydrofoil in a slit channel were used as input to the algorithm. The developed approach includes hydrofoil suppression, Otsu-based im

Subjective mental fatigue (MF) and cognitive dysfunction significantly impair the quality of life in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), particularly impacting information processing speed (IPS) and verbal learning-memory (VL/M). We assessed 66 PwMS and 38 healthy controls (HC) via the oral form of the symbol digit modalities test (SDMT-Of) for IPS, the Greek verbal learning test (GVLT) for VL/M, and the cognitive subscale of the modified fatigue impact scale (MFIS-c) for MF. This aimed at investigating the mediating role of MF in the relationship between IPS and VL/M in PwMS. PwMS performe

BACKGROUND: While cognitive processing and brain volume assessments are commonly used in multiple sclerosis (MS) research, they are not routinely incorporated into clinical care. Advances in neuroimaging software now allow for brain volume measurement to be incorporated into standard practice and guide clinical decision-making.
METHODS: In this single-center, outpatient, cohort study, pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS) patients underwent at least two volumetric brain magnetic resonance imagings (MRIs) and two Symbol Digit Modalities Tests (SDMT) at least 6 months apart. Associations we

It is well established that cerebral white matter lesions (WML), present in the majority of older adults, are associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and also with cognitive decline. However, much less is known about how WML are related to other important individual characteristics and about the generality vs. brain region-specificity of WML. In a longitudinal study of 112 community-dwelling adults (age 50-71 years at study entry), we used a machine learning approach to evaluate the relative strength of 52 variables in association with WML burden. Variables included socio-d

INTRODUCTION: It is unclear whether or to what degree literacy, aging, and other neurologic abnormalities relate to cognitive deficits among people living with HIV/AIDS in the combined antiretroviral therapy (CART) era. The primary aim of this study was to simultaneously examine the association of age, HIV-associated motor abnormalities, major depressive disorder, and reading level with information processing speed, learning, memory, and executive functions, and to determine whether processing speed mediated any of the relationships between cognitive and noncognitive variables.
METHOD: Partic

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to examine the degree to which age-related differences in early or automatic levels of auditory processing and attention-related processes explain age-related differences in auditory temporal processing. We hypothesized that age-related differences in attention and cognition compound age-related differences at automatic levels of processing, contributing to the robust age effects observed during challenging listening tasks.
DESIGN: We examined age-related and individual differences in cortical event-related potential (ERP) amplitudes and latencies, proce

Healthy midlife children of a parent with Alzheimer's disease ([AD] N = 23; 9 male) participated in neuropsychological testing, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain volumetrics were obtained. In all, 35% of the sample were apolipoprotein E (ApoE)-e4 positive (n = 8; 5 male). The ApoE-e4 group exhibited significantly slower performances on an executive function and processing speed measure and had less white matter volume than the non-ApoE-e4 group. Lesser white matter volume was significantly correlated with slower processing speed. Processing speed and changes in white matter volume

Processing speed was assessed at 5, 7, and 12 months in full-term and preterm infants (birth-weight < 1,750 g). Speed was gauged directly in a new task by presenting infants with a series of paired faces, one that remained the same across trials and one that changed; trials continued until infants showed a consistent novelty preference. At all ages, preterms required about 20% more trials and 30% more time than full-terms to reach criterion. Among preterms, slower processing was associated with greater medical risk (e.g., respiratory distress syndrome). Developmental trajectories for speed (an

Although it is established that developmental methylmercury exposure produces severe motor and sensory impairment, the effect on cognitive function is less clear. To explore this issue, monkeys with robust methylmercury-induced deficits in visual, auditory, and somatosensory function were tested on a series of tasks assessing central processing speed, which is highly correlated with intelligence in humans. Five monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were dosed from birth to 7 years of age with 50 micrograms/kg/day of mercury as methylmercuric chloride. Blood mercury levels were stable at 0.8-1.1 microg
