[Evaluating the usefulness of a breast screening program in Bogotá, Colombia].

OBJECTIVE: Using a simulation model for evaluating the usefulness of an organized breast cancer screening program in Bogotá, Colombia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Markov model was used for designing a cost-effectiveness analysis; this was compared to a biennial breast cancer screening for women aged 50 to 69 years old. The disease's natural history, breast screening studies and publications concerning breast cancer were used as input for the model; the number of diagnosed cancer cases, stage distribution and mortality, survival, costs and increased effectiveness rate were also analyzed. Evaluation of perinatal care management programs: an integrated review.

Nursing care management has become a popular method to integrate health care systems with goals of decreasing costs and improving quality. As high-risk pregnancies and newborn intensive care unit (NBICU) costs generate some of the highest costs in health care, care management has been a strategy introduced in perinatal medicine to accomplish the same goals. Consistent with other areas of nursing, perinatal care management currently has no agreed upon model of practice or method of evaluating how and whether the goals have been achieved. The purpose of this project was to evaluate various perin

Recommendations for monitoring and evaluating vitamin A programs: outcome indicators.

Monitoring and evaluation are essential components of vitamin A intervention programs. They enable program managers to track progress in achieving their goals. Recommendations for outcome indicators are based on suggestions from the International Vitamin A Consultative Group Meeting (IVACG) workshop in late October 2000 in Annecy, France, followed by a pre-XX IVACG meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam. In areas with detectable xerophthalmia or eye signs, a fall in the prevalence of Bitot's spots to <0.5% and a decrease in night blindness during pregnancy to <5% indicates that vitamin A deficiency (VAD) i

Factors limiting evaluation of health care programs for the homeless.

The problem of homelessness and the need for health care by homeless people does not seem to be subsiding. All indications are that current legislation to implement dramatic welfare reform will eventually increase the number of homeless persons. Evaluation to guide, monitor, and select the most effective approaches in the provision of health care will remain a key element in health care delivery. Although barriers regarding evaluation of homeless health care have been reported by previous researchers as similar, the results in this study document findings elicited from administrators in the fi

Economic evaluation of the one-dose HPV vaccination program in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: This study retrospectively examines the cost-effectiveness of the national HPV vaccination program using the program cost and coverage data in Nigeria. METHODS: We conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of the HPV vaccination program compared with no vaccination in Nigeria, adopting both health system and societal perspectives. A static Markov model simulating HPV infection and cervical cancer outcomes was developed for a cohort of girls aged 9-14 years, followed until age 100. The model comprised primarily the following health states: susceptible, cervical cancer, and death. It

CONTEXT: Reiki is a biofield therapy from Japan currently used in many US hospitals. Evidence supports Reiki's effectiveness for addressing cancer and treatment-related symptoms such as pain and anxiety. However, no study to date has assessed changes in nausea following Reiki received during infusion treatments or assessed patients from multiple healthcare locations. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate a Reiki program for outpatients with cancer and other chronic illnesses receiving infusion treatments (e.g., chemotherapy) at two University Hospitals infusion centers. Safety evaluation of a stepwise tracheostomy decannulation program in pediatric patients.

PURPOSE: In the event of failed tracheostomy decannulation, patients might have a tragic course of events. We retrospectively evaluated our stepwise tracheostomy decannulation program and examined its safety. METHODS: A 12-year retrospective study of pediatric patients was conducted. The decannulation program was performed on patients who had airway patency by laryngobronchoscopy and whose cannula could be capped during the day. A stepwise decannulation program was performed: continuous 48-h capping trial during hospitalization (Phase 1), removal of the tracheostomy tube for 48 h during hospi

An Early Evaluation of Remote Site Visits for ACGME Program Applications.

BACKGROUND: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, accreditation site visit interviews occurred in-person. In response to the pandemic, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) developed a remote site visit protocol. OBJECTIVE: To perform an early assessment of the remote accreditation site visits for programs applying for initial ACGME accreditation. METHODS: A cohort of residency and fellowship programs that had remote site visits was evaluated from June to August 2020. Surveys were sent to program personnel, ACGME accreditation field representatives, and executive directo

Cognitive Stimulation Therapy in a Veteran Sample: A Program Evaluation Study.

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive stimulation therapy (CST) is an evidence-based intervention for dementia. This program evaluation examined the outcomes of a modified CST program in a veteran sample. METHODS: Twenty-five veterans who participated in a once-weekly, 7-week CST program and completed pre/post-group assessments were selected for inclusion in this chart review study. In this diverse sample (Mage = 74.40; 44% White, 44% Hispanic/Latinx, 8% Black, 4% multiracial), most had a suspected neurodegenerative etiology. Paired-samples t-test examined QoL and cognitive pre/post-intervention scores. RES

The program consisted of four modules based on Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), covering motivation to change, logging gambling behaviors, planning and implementing gambling-free activities, and managing risk situations. Gambling expenditures were also logged in the program, and their development over time were anal

Evaluation of a Chronic Pain Screening Program Implemented in Primary Care.

IMPORTANCE: Although pain is among the most common symptoms reported by patients, primary care practitioners (PCPs) face substantial challenges identifying and assessing pain. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a 2-step process for chronic pain screening and follow-up in primary care. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A cross-sectional study of patients with a primary care visit between July 2, 2018, and June 1, 2019, was conducted at a statewide, multisite federally qualified health center. [Evaluation of a basic educational program for patients with rheumatoid arthritis].

BACKGROUND: A new conceptual framework has enabled the flexible development of rheumatological patient educational programs for different healthcare settings. On this basis, a 5‑h basic training program for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was developed to be used in specialized centers. Rheumatologists and psychologists were first trained and then the efficacy of the patient training program was evaluated based on the causal model of patient education. METHODS: The externally randomized waiting control group study with 249 RA patients included 3 measurement points. The impact of the 5
