"If I Die Tomorrow, Have a Party": Bereaved Parents' Coping with the Emotional Mandate in Soldiers' Letters.

This phenomenological study examines 20 bereaved couples from the "Iron Swords" War in Israel (who received letters from fallen sons instructing them to "celebrate life" instead of mourning. Through in-depth dyadic interviews, the "Emotional Mandate" was analyzed-a process where the deceased's request becomes a rigid moral obligation divesting parents of emotional autonomy and creating "conditional mourning". Findings reveal a "forced joy paradox" generating somatic dissonance between required external actions and internal silenced pain. The "dyadic effect" highlights a gender gap: fathers int

Suicide bereavement and complicated grief.

Losing a loved to suicide is one is one of life's most painful experiences. The feelings of loss, sadness, and loneliness experienced after any death of a loved one are often magnified in suicide survivors by feelings of quilt, confusion, rejection, shame, anger, and the effects of stigma and trauma. Furthermore, survivors of suicide loss are at higher risk of developing major depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicidal behaviors, as well as a prolonged form of grief called complicated grief. Added to the burden is the substantial stigma, which can keep survivors away from much ne

Men's mourning experiences for the death of a loved one: An integrative review.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the current state of knowledge regarding men's mourning experiences following the death of a loved one. METHOD: An integrative review was conducted using quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies published in English or Spanish between 2017 and 2022 that investigated men's mourning experiences. Studies focused on grief in participants with different sexes or gender identities, maladaptive grief, persistent complex bereavement disorder, prolonged grief disorder, bereavement over pets, or losses other than a human death were excluded. Additionally, reviews, book

A prospective examination of catastrophic misinterpretations and experiential avoidance in emotional distress following loss.

This prospective study examined the role of experiential avoidance and catastrophic misinterpretations of grief reactions in emotional distress following the death of a loved one. Eighty-two bereaved individuals completed measures of experiential avoidance, catastrophic misinterpretations, and symptom of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and depression within the first half year of bereavement, and again completed measures assessing PGD and depression severity 1 year later. The findings showed that experiential avoidance was significantly correlated with endorsement of catastrophic misinterpretat

Peer-led Group Support for Grief Distress.

Despite the wide availability of peer-led grief support groups, there has been limited study of their methodology or outcomes. This pilot study examined a nonclinical sample of 99 adults who self-referred to a peer-led group. This group involved a time-limited, manualized, closed group intervention (Restorative Retelling) that was co-facilitated by peer volunteers. The study documented a low dropout rate from this free service with preimprovement/postimprovement in scores of grief distress as measured by the Prolonged Grief Disorder (PG-13) scale. The peer volunteers were preselected and train

Latent classes of acute grief reactions in the shadow of collective trauma and its predictors in bereaved adults.

The current study explored grief reaction profiles after the October 7th, 2023, Israeli massacre regarding the loss of significant others. It investigated factors worsening pre-existing grief in 2,028 adult civilians, with 1,263 reporting pre- or post-massacre loss. Participants completed self-reports on prolonged grief disorder (PGD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD (CPTSD), cognitive emotional regulation (CER), and assumptive worldviews. Latent class analysis identified four classes of probable PGD among those with lifetime loss: "high PGD-both core and emotional pain" (3

Death notification in clinical practice: protocols, clinician impact and family outcomes.

Death notification (DN) is a critical clinical task that initiates and influences the bereavement trajectory and carries profound implications for clinician well-being. Evidence links DN quality to cognitive-emotional processing of loss, attachment reorganisation and mobilisation of social support. A diverse ecosystem of DN protocols offers stepwise guidance, but outcome data, cultural adaptation and notifier support remain limited. Drawing on DN protocol methodology, DN and prolonged grief disorder mechanisms and contemporary grief theory, this State of the Science article argues that DN shou

Study protocol for a randomized trial examining a peer grief support approach for people grieving drug overdose deaths.

BACKGROUND: People bereaved by drug overdose experience a “special grief” that includes guilt, shame, and blame for their loved one’s death, which often compounds suffering and interferes with help-seeking. This population is vulnerable to poor health outcomes including prolonged grief disorder, risky substance use, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Peer grief support may reduce risks in people bereaved by overdose by buffering grievers from the negative effects of increased stigma and isolation. Peer Support Community Partners has developed the RIVER peer grief support model for bereavemen

Profiles of grief, post-traumatic stress, and post-traumatic growth among people bereaved due to COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 deaths elevate the prevalence of prolonged grief and post-traumatic stress symptoms among the bereaved, yet few studies have examined potential positive outcomes. Moreover, how COVID-19 bereavement affects individual-level mental health outcomes is under-researched. OBJECTIVE: This is the first study to use latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify heterogeneous profiles of prolonged grief, post-traumatic stress and post-traumatic growth among people bereaved due to COVID-19 and to identify predictors of latent class membership. METHODS: Four hundred and twenty-two Chine

Traumatized Syrian Refugees with Ambiguous Loss: Predictors of Mental Distress.

Refugees from war zones often have missing significant others. A loss without confirmation is described as an ambiguous loss. This physical absence with simultaneous mental persistence can be accompanied by economic, social or legal problems, boundary ambiguity (i.e., uncertainty about who belongs to the family system), and can have a negative impact on mental health. The aim of this study was to identify sociodemographic and loss-related predictors for prolonged grief, anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and somatization in treatment-seeking Syrian refugees with post-tr

Transitional objects of grief.

BACKGROUND: Transitional objects provide security and symbolic connection with valued others when separated from them. Bereaved parents often keep, cherish and visit saved objects of their deceased child. This research examined the hypothesis that these objects behave as transitional objects of grief in bereaved mothers during three years following their infants' deaths from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. METHODS: Questionnaires were administered asking about the presence of kept objects and momentos from their deceased infant, and the frequency, location and emotions experienced during visits

Loss plus adversity: posttraumatic stress and prolonged grief three years after the 2023 Türkiye earthquakes.

Most mental health research following the 6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes has focused on community samples assessed within the first two years, leaving longer-term trauma- and loss-related psychopathology less well characterized. In this cross-sectional study, 149 adults who directly experienced the earthquakes were assessed at a psychiatry outpatient clinic in the affected region approximately three years after the disaster. Posttraumatic stress, prolonged grief, meaning attributed to loss, and rumination were assessed by self-report, while depression was clinician-rated using the H

Grief and grief support needs in Canada: A mixed methods protocol.

BACKGROUND: In their lifetime, every person will experience the loss of someone they care about. In Canada, the COVID-19 pandemic, the ongoing opioid crisis, and the discovery of unmarked graves at residential schools have brought this into particular focus. Research and theory in the area of grief have evolved over the years. Grief literacy challenges us to better understand and support grief in all aspects of our society. The Public Health Model of Bereavement Support was theorized and tested in Australia. The supports people seek are explored and the model identifies low, medium, and high c

Effects and User-Reported Experiences of a Self-Management Mobile Health App for Grieving Adolescents: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents who experience the loss of a family member are at increased risk of adverse mental health outcomes, yet many face barriers or may be reluctant to access in-person or group-based support. mHealth (mobile health) interventions can help address these barriers by offering flexible, accessible, and low-threshold support. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the short- and long-term mental health effects of Alba - Youth in Grief, a preventive self-management mobile app for bereaved adolescents. The primary outcome was symptoms of prolonged grief, while secondary outcomes included

The burden of grief and moral injury in neurosurgery residency compared with other high-risk specialties.

OBJECTIVE: Residents in specialties with frequent exposure to patient death, catastrophic outcomes, and morally complex decisions may be more vulnerable to emotional distress. While burnout is well described in residency training, grief and moral injury remain less explored. This study aimed to examine grief symptoms, moral injury, coping strategies, psychological distress, and perceived program support across neurosurgery and other surgical and acute-care medical specialties. METHODS: A cross-sectional, anonymous, web-based survey of resident physicians and fellows in neurosurgery, general s

Psilocybin-Assisted suppoRtive psychoTherapy IN the treatment of prolonged Grief (PARTING) trial: protocol for an open-label pilot trial for cancer-related bereavement.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) represents a substantial public health issue, especially in oncology settings where it affects up to 30% of bereaved carers. Current best-practice treatments are lengthy, and up to 50% of participants have persistent PGD. Building on encouraging recent research with psychedelic-assisted therapies, the Psilocybin-Assisted suppoRtive psychoTherapy IN the treatment of prolonged Grief (PARTING) trial is the first study to consider psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy as a potential treatment for prolonged grief. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: PARTING is an open-la

Prolonged Grief, Depression and Loneliness Among Chinese Bereaved College Students: A Latent Class Analysis.

Bereavement may trigger a variety of psychological reactions, including prolonged grief disorder (PGD), depression, and loneliness. This study aimed to explore the co-occurrence patterns of these symptoms among Chinese bereaved university students. Using latent class analysis (LCA), four distinct classes were identified: a high symptom class (22.2%), a predominantly grief class (21.9%), a moderate symptom with prominent anhedonia class (23.3%), and a low symptom class (32.6%). Individuals with poorer physical condition, rural residence, unexpected loss, or lack of opportunity to say goodbye we

Measurement and assessment of grief in a large international sample.

BACKGROUND: In 2022, the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and an update of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5 TR) were released for implementation worldwide and now include the new Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). The newest definition of PGD is based on robust clinical research from the Global North yet until now has not been tested for global applicability. METHODS: The current study assesses the new PGD ICD-11 criteria in a large international sample of 1393 bereaved adults. The majority of the sample was included from the USΑ. Additionally, we con

Grief as a psychiatric disorder.

The revisions DSM-5 and ICD-11 are attempting to describe psychopathological reactions to bereavement. The delineation between depressive disorder and normal bereavement-related depressed state lacks sufficient data to guide diagnostic development. In contrast, there is strong evidence for a diagnosis of prolonged grief that is distinguished from depression and involves marked impairment.
