BACKGROUND: Mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes increase the lifetime risk of developing breast cancer to 68-72% by the age of 80. One of the modalities to manage the risk is a prophylactic mastectomy. Bilateral nipple-sparing mastectomy specifically offers the most favorable esthetic outcomes but the evidence for its oncological safety remains limited. Thus, we aimed to compare the occurrence of breast cancer between nipple-sparing mastectomy and surveillance groups of BRCA1 or BRCA 2 mutations carriers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: BRCA1 or BRCA2-positive patients undergoing bilateral prophylac

OBJECTIVES: Contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) reduces the risk of contralateral breast cancer (BC) following unilateral BC, but may not increase survival in BRCA1/2 mutation negative women. Despite this, and the risk for adverse physical and psychological impact, uptake is increasing in BRCA1/2 mutation negative women. We aimed to quantify the degree of reduction in lifetime contralateral BC risk women required to justify CPM, and to explore demographic, disease and psychosocial predictors of preferences using Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) as a theoretical framework. PURPOSE: Bilateral prophylactic mastectomy (BPM) is effective in reducing the risk of breast cancer in women with a well-defined family history of breast cancer or in women with BRCA 1 or 2 mutations. Evaluating patient-reported outcomes following BPM are thus essential for evaluating success of BPM from patient's perspective. Our systematic review aimed to: (1) identify studies describing health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients following BPM with or without reconstruction; (2) assess the effect of BPM with or without reconstruction on HRQOL; and (3) identify predictors of HRQOL pos

BACKGROUND: Rates of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) have increased in the United States, with younger women with breast cancer the most likely to have CPM.
METHODS: As part of an ongoing cohort study of young women diagnosed with breast cancer at age ≤40 years, we conducted multinomial logistic regression of data from 560 women with unilateral Stage I-III disease to identify factors associated with: (1) CPM versus unilateral mastectomy (UM); (2) CPM versus breast-conserving surgery (BCS).
RESULTS: Median age at diagnosis was 37 years; 66 % of women indicated that their doctor sa

OBJECTIVES: Surgical therapy for invasive breast cancer includes breast conservation therapy (BCT), unilateral mastectomy (UM), or bilateral mastectomy, including contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) with or without reconstruction (± R). The goal of this study was to determine factors associated with CPM.
METHODS: A breast cancer database collected from 2000 through 2008 was retrospectively reviewed. Treatment groups analyzed included BCT, UM ± R, and CPM ± R. Variables were compared using ANOVA F-tests and chi-square tests. Multivariate analysis was performed using logistic regression

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether the American Society of Breast Surgeons' (ASBrS) guideline to offer genetic testing (GT) to all patients with breast cancer (BC) impacted contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) rates. We sought to describe the trends of GT and CPM rates and to determine predictors of CPM uptake.
METHODS: After retrospective review of two prospectively maintained institutional databases, we identified patients with unilateral stage 0-III BC who underwent surgery between January 2016 and July 2020. Trends in GT and CPM rates were described and multivariable logistic regres

INTRODUCTION: In 2016, an American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) statement discouraged contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) in average-risk women with unilateral breast cancer. Despite evidence of no oncologic benefit and related attempts to discourage the practice, CPM remains prevalent. This study aims to assess CPM trends post-ASBrS statement and factors associated with these trends.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of patients with primary unilateral breast cancer undergoing complete mastectomy at a single-tertiary center between January 2014 and December 2020 was perform

Many germline mutations have been implicated in breast cancer pathogenesis and despite several studies on occult atypical lesions in prophylactic mastectomy specimens from patients with BRCA1/2 mutations, there are very limited data on other genes associated with increased breast cancer risk and the distribution of lesions in patients with hereditary breast cancer. We identified 207 patients who underwent bilateral prophylactic mastectomy due to germline mutations in BRCA1/2, PALB2, CHEK2, ATM, CDH1, PTEN, BARD1, or strong family history between 2015 and 2023. Patients with biopsy-proven past

OBJECTIVES: Prophylactic contralateral/bilateral mastectomy (PCM/PBM), as a risk-reducing mastectomy procedure, has a few evidence-based indica- tions; however, there is an increasing trend in the total number of operations globally. Worldwide famous actress Angelina Jolie was detected to have BRCA-1 mutation and underwent a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy in 2013. The procedure was perceived as 'lifesaving' worldwide, which eventually led to a significant increase in BRCA gene mutation analysis and PCM/PBM. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate our risk-reducing PCM/PBM results.

Background: Preoperative genetic testing affects the surgical decision-making among women with breast cancer. To avoid breast-conserving surgery and to offer the possibility of mastectomy with immediate reconstruction in high-risk patients, genetic testing for pathogenic variants in BRCA1 or BRCA2 and a pedigree-based familial breast cancer risk assessment was offered to younger women with breast cancer in Denmark. We evaluated the impact of the risk stratification through genetic counseling on the uptake of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM).Material and methods: The prospective coho

BACKGROUND: Studies have reported that breast cancer patients have limited understanding about the oncologic outcomes following contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM). We hypothesized that an in-visit decision aid (DA) would be associated with higher patient knowledge about the anticipated short and long term outcomes of CPM.
METHODS: We piloted a DA which used the SCOPED: (Situation, Choices, Objectives, People, Evaluation and Decision) framework. Knowledge, dichotomized as "low" (≤3 correct) versus "high" (≥4 correct), was assessed immediately after the visit by a 5 item survey. There

INTRODUCTION: Patients with unilateral breast cancer have an increased risk of developing contralateral breast cancer. A recent population-based study demonstrated that the proportion of patients with unilateral breast cancer in the United States who underwent contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) has increased by 150% in recent years. The current study evaluated patients who underwent breast cancer surgery in a metropolitan-based hospital system to determine factors associated with CPM.
METHODS: We reviewed the records of all patients who underwent surgical treatment for breast cancer

BACKGROUND: The past two decades have witnessed the increasing application of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) for women with breast cancer in the western countries. Over 30% of young patients choose to underwent CPM up to 2015. However, the adoption rate of CPM has not shown a remarkably increasing in Asian countries. In China, only a few centers have introduced CPM, and no relevant literature has been published. In this study, we look forward to identify the clinical features and prognostic factors of women who underwent CPM in our hospital, to inform decision-making processes for

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Over the last decade, researchers have noted an increase in the rate of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) across the United States despite the limited evidence on survival improvement associated with this surgery. Due to a lack of information on CPM in South Carolina, the authors of this study proposed to evaluate trends of different breast cancer surgery types with an emphasis on CPM rates.
METHODS: A descriptive analysis was conducted regarding CPM in South Carolina among females who underwent surgery for breast cancer cases diagnosed from 2005-2013. The

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis for North American and Western European women. Increased knowledge in availability of genetic testing has helped to identify those women at high risk of eventually developing breast cancer. This has resulted in more women considering bilateral prophylactic mastectomy as a viable preventative option. Although the efficacy of the procedure has been established, much less is known about the psychological impact of undergoing this procedure. In order to assess these factors, we reviewed what is currently known about the psychological impact of unde

BACKGROUND: Women from families with breast and/or ovarian cancers seek advice and counselling for risk assessment, but they also want information about preventive measures that might reduce their risk of developing these neoplasms.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was undertaken in order to assess 15 women's experience with the decision-making process prior to undergoing prophylactic bilateral mastectomy (PM) and immediate breast reconstruction (IBR). It was also designed to determine the degree of the women's satisfaction with the information delivered by the different caregivers, and wheth
