Visual and proprioceptive interaction in patients with bilateral vestibular loss.

Following bilateral vestibular loss (BVL) patients gradually adapt to the loss of vestibular input and rely more on other sensory inputs. Here we examine changes in the way proprioceptive and visual inputs interact. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate visual responses in the context of varying levels of proprioceptive input in 12 BVL subjects and 15 normal controls. A novel metal-free vibrator was developed to allow vibrotactile neck proprioceptive input to be delivered in the MRI system. A high level (100 Hz) and low level (30 Hz) control stimulus was applied o

Selective proprioceptive loss from a thalamic lacunar stroke.

In an elderly woman a small thalamic infarct, documented by computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, caused proprioceptive loss contralaterally without impairment of other sensory modalities. This patient, the first so reported, demonstrates the anatomic separation of spinothalamic and dorsal column/medial lemniscus sensory modalities in the human thalamus.

Ankle Proprioception, Dual-Task Balance Performance, and Ageing: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Balance is reliant on key sensory information to maintain postural control. Proprioception is one of the key sensory inputs that influence postural control during static balance tasks. Poor proprioception can lead to impaired balance, which may be amplified under dual-task balance conditions. This study investigates this relationship between proprioception and dual-task balance performance and how it may be affected by age. Proprioception was measured for each ankle using Active Movement Extent Discrimination Assessment (AMEDA), a protocol which determines ankle kinaesthesia acuity through act

The sensible senseless person: a theoretical framework for clinical assessment of proprioception.

Position-matching is a common task used to assess the sense of position, a sub-modality of proprioception. The 'sensible senseless person' (SSP), a theoretical construct that lacks sensory perception but is capable of logical inference, was developed to critically evaluate common outcome measures in such tasks. This framework reveals that traditional measures are influenced by task structure, strategic responses and the prior beliefs of the SSP. To address these limitations, we propose the Guess Index (GI), an outcome measure designed to ensure that the SSP receives the same score regardless o

Assessment of Elbow Proprioception with Inertial Measurement Units-Validity and Reliability Study.

BACKGROUND: Inertial measurement units (IMUs) represent a relatively new and promising method for motion analysis. Their main advantages include small size and portability, combined with the use of advanced technologies. To date, few studies have investigated the application of these devices for proprioception assessment, and none have focused specifically on the elbow joint. Therefore, the aim of our study was to assess reliability and validate the protocol of elbow proprioception evaluation using inertial motion sensors. METHODS: Twenty healthy participants underwent active and passive prop

EEG Markers of Improved Proprioception and Posture in Older Women With Osteoporosis.

The age-related decline in proprioception contributes to poor balance and motor coordination, increasing the risk of falls. Ten female participants (>65 years) with osteoporosis underwent the Mini Balance Evaluation System test before (T0) and after (T1) a three-week programme involving the application of neuro-muscular taping to the lumbar, rhomboid and gastrocnemius muscles, alongside 15 minutes of simple physical exercises each day to improve proprioception. High-density electroencephalography (EEG) data were collected during the sensory orientation tasks, i.e., standing with eyes open or c

Impaired cervical proprioception in patients with lateral epicondylitis: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Lateral elbow epicondylitis (LE) is one of the most common upper-limb overuse injuries. Several studies have reported an association between LE and proprioceptive impairments in upper-limb joints, including the wrist, elbow, and shoulder. The current study aimed to assess cervical proprioception in individuals with LE. METHODS: Thirty patients with LE and 30 asymptomatic participants (control group) were enrolled in this study. Cervical proprioception was evaluated in both groups through assessments of joint position sense (JPS), sense of movement (SOM), and sensation of force (SO

Correlation between proprioception, functionality, patient-reported knee condition and joint acoustic emissions.

Non-invasive assessment of joint status using acoustic emissions (AE) is a growing research area that has the potential to translate into clinical practice. The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation of the knee's AE with measures of proprioception, self-assessment, and performance, as it can be hypothesised that, AE parameters will correlate with joint function metrics due to AE being recorded during interaction of the articular surfaces. Threshold to detect passive motion (TTDPM), Knee Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores (KOOS) and 5 times sit-to-stand test (5STS) were collected f

Effects of active fatiguing movement versus passive repetitive movement on knee proprioception.

BACKGROUND: Proprioception can be affected by many factors such as age, gender, injury, disease, exercise, and fatigue. To date, the mechanisms or pathways by which fatigue influences proprioception have not been elucidated. Generally, it is accepted that local muscular effects occurred during fatigue state may negatively affect proprioception. Research has indicated that metabolic acidosis resulting from active muscle activities, along with tissue stretching and joint laxity resulting from repetitive joint movements, are likely related to proprioceptive deterioration. So far, little direct ev

Egocentric visual target position and velocity coding: role of ocular muscle proprioception.

Limited knowledge is available regarding the processes by which the brain codes the velocity of visual targets with respect to the observer. Two models have been previously proposed to describe the visual target localization mechanism. Both assume that the necessary information is derived from the coding of the position of the eye in the orbit, either through a copy of the muscular activation (out flow model) or through eye muscle proprioception (in flow model). Eye velocity coding might be derived from velocity sensitive ocular muscle proprioceptors or from position coding signals through dif

Reproducibility of corticokinematic coherence for proprioceptive stimulation of the ankle joint.

Corticokinematic coherence (CKC) between cortical oscillations and limb kinematics reflects the cortical processing of proprioceptive afference. However, it remains unknown whether CKC to lower-limb proprioceptive stimulation is reproducible. Here we examined the reproducibility of CKC for the ankle joint in ∼one-year follow-up study. Twenty-seven healthy volunteers participated in two magnetoencephalography (MEG) sessions separated by 13.2 ± 1.4 months. Continuous passive ankle-joint rotations were elicited at 2 Hz (4 min for each ankle) using MEG-compatible pneumatic actuators. Coherence was

Proprioceptive endings at muscle spindles as a possible target of autoantibodies.

Autoimmune nodopathies are characterized by autoantibodies targeting proteins of the nodes of Ranvier of peripheral nerves. Anti-Contactin-1 (CNTN1) autoantibodies are associated with sensorimotor neuropathy and severe sensory ataxia. While damage to the nodal architecture due to axoglial disjunction is considered the primary pathogenic mechanism of autoimmune nodopathies, the reason for the severe sensory ataxia, accompanied by proprioceptive impairment, remains unclear. We therefore aimed to investigate the expression of CNTN1 in muscle spindles and the binding of IgG from patients with anti

Proprioceptive engagement of the human cerebellum studied with 7T-fMRI.

Proprioception, the process of perceiving our bodies in space, is a key aspect of self-perception. The cerebellar cortex is believed to play a critical role in proprioception. However, our understanding of the functional involvement of the cerebellum in proprioception remains limited due to the intricate, thin, and highly folded structure of the human cerebellar cortex, which is more challenging to resolve using in-vivo MRI compared to the cerebral cortex. In this study, we employed high-resolution, B1-shimmed, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at 7T to investigate proprioceptive in
