Chronic high temperature exposure, brain structure, and mental health: Cross-sectional and prospective studies.

To investigate the association between chronic high temperature exposure and brain structure and how the association influences mental health, we conducted cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies within a sample of 41,552 UK Biobank participants. Chronic temperature exposure was assessed for each participant based on their residential histories and gridded reanalysis temperature data and defined as the percentage of days with a maximum temperature exceeding 27 °C over the last 20 years. Generalized additive models and difference-in-differences approaches were used to estimate the associ

Role of macrophages in aortic dissection pathogenesis: insights from preclinical studies to translational prospective.

Aortic dissection is a critical vascular disease that is characterized by a high mortality rate and inflammation significantly influences its onset and progression. Recent studies highlight the integral role of macrophages, key players in the immune system, in the pathological landscape of aortic dissection. These cells are involved in crucial processes, such as the remodeling of the extracellular matrix, immunocyte infiltration, and phenotypic switching of smooth muscle cells, which are essential for the structural integrity and functional dynamics of the aortic wall. Despite these insights,

Direct Oral Anticoagulants in Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension: First Meta-Analysis of Prospective Studies.

Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are becoming increasingly popular clinically, but their safety and effectiveness profile in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is not well-established. Literature from the PubMed and EMBASE databases was systematically screened up to February 2024 to identify relevant studies on the use of DOACs in CTEPH patients. The bias risk of RCTs was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2.0. The quality of observational prospective cohorts was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale tool. Data pooled from different studies wer

Clinical outcomes in prospective versus retrospective studies on arthroscopic Bankart repair: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The majority of the current literature on arthroscopic Bankart repair is retrospective, and discrepancies exist regarding clinical outcomes including recurrent instability and return to play among studies of different levels of evidence. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to perform a systematic review of the literature to compare the outcomes of prospective and retrospective studies on arthroscopic Bankart repair. METHODS: A search was performed using the PubMed/Medline database for all studies that reported clinical outcomes on Bankart repair for anterior shoulder instabilit

Effects of BCG vaccination on donor unrestricted T cells in two prospective cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Non-protein antigen classes can be presented to T cells by near-monomorphic antigen-presenting molecules such as CD1, MR1, and butyrophilin 3A1. Such T cells, referred to as donor unrestricted T (DURT) cells, typically express stereotypic T cell receptors. The near-unrestricted nature of DURT cell antigen recognition is of particular interest for vaccine development, and we sought to define the roles of DURT cells, including MR1-restricted MAIT cells, CD1b-restricted glucose monomycolate (GMM)-specific T cells, CD1d-restricted NKT cells, and γδ T cells, in vaccination against Mycob

Oral Microbiome Analysis in Prospective Genome Cohort Studies of the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project.

A baseline oral microbiome study of the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization (TMM) was planned to characterize the profile of the oral microbiome in the Japanese population. The study also aimed to clarify risk factors for multifactorial diseases by integrated analysis of the oral microbiome and host genome/omics information. From 2013 to 2016, we collected three types of oral biospecimens, saliva, supragingival plaque, and tongue swab, from a total of 25,101 participants who had a dental examination in TMM. In this study, we used two independent cohorts; the Community-Based Cohort and Birth a

Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in Iran (the PERSIAN Cohort Study): Rationale, Objectives, and Design.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) account for 76% of deaths in Iran, and this number is on the rise, in parallel with global rates. Many risk factors associated with NCDs are preventable; however, it is first necessary to conduct observational studies to identify relevant risk factors and the most appropriate approach to controlling them. Iran is a multiethnic country; therefore, in 2014 the Ministry of Health and Medical Education launched a nationwide cohort study-Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in Iran (PERSIAN)-in order to identify the most prevalent NCDs among Iran's ethnic gro

Abdominal obesity and gastroesophageal cancer risk: systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.

To systematically and quantitatively review the relation of abdominal obesity, as measured by waist circumference (WC) and waist to hip ratio (WHR), to total gastroesophageal cancer, gastric cancer (GC), and esophageal cancer. PubMed and Web of Science databases were searched for studies assessing the association between abdominal obesity and gastroesophageal cancer (GC and/or esophageal cancer) up to August 2016. A random-effect model was used to calculate the summary relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Seven prospective cohort studies - one publication included two separ

Azacitidine in Lower-Risk Myelodysplastic Syndromes: A Meta-Analysis of Data from Prospective Studies.

BACKGROUND: After erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) failure, lenalidomide and hypomethylating agents are the only remaining treatment options for most patients with lower-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (LR-MDS). Optimal choice of these agents as front-line therapy in non-del(5q) LR-MDS is unclear. Because azacitidine clinical data mainly describe experience in higher-risk MDS, we performed a meta-analysis of patient-level data to evaluate azacitidine in patients with red blood cell (RBC) transfusion-dependent LR-MDS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched English-language articles for prospe

Vitamin B₁₂ status, cognitive decline and dementia: a systematic review of prospective cohort studies.

Poor vitamin B₁₂ status may lead to the development of cognitive decline and dementia but there is a large variation in the quality, design of and results reported from these investigations. We have undertaken a systematic review of the evidence for the association between vitamin B₁₂ status and cognitive decline in older adults. A database search of the literature to 2011 was undertaken, using keywords related to vitamin B₁₂ and cognition. All prospective cohort studies assessing the association of serum vitamin B₁₂ or biomarkers were included. Quality assessment and extraction of the data we

Migraine headaches in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS): comparison of two prospective cross-sectional studies.

BACKGROUND: Headaches are more frequent in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) than healthy control (HC) subjects. The 2004 International Headache Society (IHS) criteria were used to define CFS headache phenotypes. METHODS: Subjects in Cohort 1 (HC = 368; CFS = 203) completed questionnaires about many diverse symptoms by giving nominal (yes/no) answers. Cohort 2 (HC = 21; CFS = 67) had more focused evaluations. They scored symptom severities on 0 to 4 anchored ordinal scales, and had structured headache evaluations. All subjects had history and physical examinations; assessments for exclusion crit

Mental health and hostility as predictors of temporary employment: evidence from two prospective studies.

We used two studies to examine whether mental health and hostility predicted temporary employment. Study 1 involved a cohort of 970 Finnish hospital employees (102 men, 868 women) who had temporary job contracts at baseline. After adjustment for demographics, organisational tenure and part-time work status, doctor-diagnosed psychiatric disorder predicted continuing in temporary employment instead of receiving a permanent job by the end of the 2-year follow-up. A higher level of hostility was also associated with temporary employment, but only among employees in low socioeconomic positions. In

Prospective hospital-wide studies of 505 patients with nosocomial bacteraemia in 1997 and 2002.

We conducted surveys in 1997 and 2002 to determine the rate, underlying sources and outcome of nosocomial bacteraemia. Blood culture results were reviewed daily. All patients with positive cultures drawn >or=48 h after hospitalization were included in the study and their charts were reviewed. The underlying source of infection was determined by pre-defined clinical and/or microbiological criteria. Patients were followed until discharge or death. In 1997 and 2002, 851 and 857 patient-unique cases of bacteraemia were diagnosed, respectively, excluding contaminants; of these, 228 (27%) and 277 (3

Dissociation and post-traumatic stress disorder: two prospective studies of road traffic accident survivors.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative symptoms during trauma predict post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but they are often transient. It is controversial whether they predict chronic PTSD over and above what can be predicted from other post-trauma symptoms. AIMS: To investigate prospectively the relationship between dissociative symptoms before, during and after a trauma and other psychological predictors, and chronic PTSD. METHOD: Two samples of 27 and 176 road traffic accident survivors were recruited. Patients were assessed shortly after the accident and followed at intervals over the next 6 month
