Prosthetic arthroplasties are continuing to increase in the United States. While prosthetic joint infections are a less common adverse event, they can have a devastating impact on the patient as well as have a large economic burden on the health care industry. Prosthetic joint infections can be surgically managed by debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention, 1-stage revisions, 2-stage revisions, resection arthroplasties, arthrodesis, and amputations. Antimicrobial therapy typically includes 4 to 6 weeks of parenteral or highly bioavailable oral agents. Suppressive and chronic oral antimi

Implant supported auricular prosthesis can be retained by several mechanical means, one of them being the Hader bar and clip system. Conventionally two or more rider clips are used. This technique describes a modified Hader bar design to maintain retention while eliminating the requirement of a second clip, significantly bringing down cost.

PURPOSE: Keratoprosthesis offers certain pediatric patients with congenital corneal opacity an alternative for improving vision. Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) combined with Boston keratoprosthesis type 1 (KPro) has demonstrated success in reducing postoperative complications such as retinal detachment (RD) in adults. However, its role and outcomes have yet to be investigated in pediatric patients. This study investigates the outcomes of PPV in KPro pediatric patients, with a focus on prosthesis retention, visual acuity (VA), and postoperative complications.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective

Objectives: To compare prosthesis survival, complication-free survival, and maintenance-free survival between telescopic-crown-retained dentures (TCDs) and root-cap-retained overdentures with ball attachments (RCDs), and to evaluate associated clinical factors. Methods: This retrospective single-center cohort study included 654 unique patients, each contributing one eligible prosthesis (406 TCDs and 248 RCDs). Mean follow-up was 4.15 years for TCD and 2.75 years for RCD. Time-to-event outcomes were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier methods and multivariable Cox regression. Adjusted analyses were res

There is currently limited data to describe managing a urethral stricture identified while attempting penile prosthesis placement. This study reports our management of urethral strictures during penile prosthesis placement and proposes a guideline for this event. A retrospective analysis was performed on patients who underwent penile prosthesis implantation and had incidentally found urethral stricture disease from 2009 to 2023. Cases that proceeded to the placement of penile implant were classified as "completed," while cases that could not proceed were classified as "aborted." Successful man

Overdentures are one of the most sought-after treatment options for patients with few remaining natural teeth. They are desired as they tend to preserve the natural teeth and its intact periodontium. This helps in reducing the residual ridge resorption and preserve proprioception. These characteristics offer better masticatory ability in patients rehabilitated with overdentures when compared to conventional complete dentures. Enhancements such as telescopic denture for better retention prove to be efficient clinically. Telescopic dentures enable frictional type of retention. This is a case rep

This article presents the use of dental implants for the retention of thumb prostheses. Two patients with traumatic amputation of the thumb were rehabilitated with implant-supported digital prostheses. A dental implant was placed in the residual bone of the thumb. After a 3-month osseointegration period, retentive attachment and silicone prostheses were fabricated. Osseointegration of the implant, peri-implant skin health, and prosthesis function were assessed every 6 months. The follow-up period was 18 months for patient 1 and 21 months for patient 2. Osseointegration was achieved, and there

Anaerobes are less frequently described as causative pathogen of prosthetic joint infection (PJI). We report the first case of early PJI after hip arthroplasty due to Clostridium difficile in a diabetic and HIV-1 infected patient with bacteremia. Our patient was successfully treated through surgical debridement and prosthesis retention combined with targeted antibiotic therapy.

A 47-year-old man underwent surgical resection and reconstruction with a fibula osteocutaneous flap. After the surgery, a surgical obturator was placed and adjusted. After flap healing, a conventional obturator was fabricated with polymethyl methacrylate resin and retained by the anatomical undercuts around the reconstructed fibula bone flap and the posterior part of the defect. As the defect shape changed with time, a second conventional obturator was fabricated and fitted. No further recurrence of myoepithelioma was observed for 2 years, and the patient was satisfied with the obturator durin

BACKGROUND: Acute periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) represents a major cause of early failure following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). In selected cases, implant retention strategies such as debridement, antibiotics, and implant retention (DAIR), including modified techniques such as debridement, antibiotic pearls, and retention of the implant (DAPRI), may be considered. However, the success of these approaches is strongly influenced by the condition of the surrounding soft tissues. In the presence of compromised or tenuous wound conditions, soft tissue reconstruction may play a critical ad

BACKGROUND: The increasing numbers of primary total hip and knee replacements have subsequently led to growing rates of periprosthetic fractures. In many cases geriatric patients with osteopenia or osteoporotic bone quality are affected. The goal of treatment is the retention or reconstruction of joint function using open reduction and internal fixation or a revision prosthesis.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is a description of the basic principles of treatment of periprosthetic fractures of the lower extremities.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An exact description of the fracture using current

BACKGROUND: Stenosis of the left main bronchus caused by inflammatory diseases and neoplasms is a serious clinical problem because it can cause obstructive pneumonia and may require pneumonectomy. As an alternative to various treatments currently available, including balloon dilatation, stenting, and bronchoplasty, we propose the use of a prosthesis developed based on the concept of in situ tissue engineering for replacement of the left main bronchus.
METHODS: The main frame of the tissue-engineered prosthesis is a polypropylene mesh tube, 12 to 15 mm in inner diameter and 30 mm in length, wi

Relying on Nissenkorn preliminary report (J. of Urology, July 89), we inserted this intraurethral device in 11 patients. This new urethral prostheses resembles a double Malecot 16 F. catheter, available in 45.55 and 60 mm lengths. It is inserted through a 21 F. cystoscope sheath under local anesthesia. We reserved this prostheses for selected patients who presented a urinary retention due to cervico-prostatic obstruction, with anesthetic contraindications to an operation, or limited life expectancy. The follow-up is from 1 to 4 months. Of the 11 patients, 8 were able to void without incontinen

Congenital absence of permanent teeth, or anodontia, is a rare developmental anomaly, and isolated anodontia with retained deciduous teeth is even more uncommon. This report describes the prosthodontic management of a 16-year-old female diagnosed with nonsyndromic familial anodontia who presented with retained primary teeth and complete absence of permanent tooth buds. A fixed interim prosthesis was planned to restore oral function, improve facial esthetics, and support psychosocial well-being. Full-mouth impressions were made, and a heat-cure acrylic resin prosthesis was fabricated, using the

INTRODUCTION: A resected mandibular edentulous ridge resulting from an ameloblastoma and marginal mandibulectomy is a restorative challenge. To maintain oral hygiene, recurrent examinations, and for long-term maintenance, a removable dental prosthesis is preferred to an implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 28-year-old Asian man was referred for evaluation of a radiolucent area on the right side of the mandible. The right mandibular area had increasingly enlarged over a period of ≥5 months. Marginal resection and inferior alveolar nerve repositioning of the mandible w
