Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson's Disease: Epidemiology, Clinical Profile, Protective and Risk Factors.

Cognitive impairment is a common non-motor symptom in Parkinson's Disease (PD) and an important source of patient disability and caregiver burden. The timing, profile and rate of cognitive decline varies widely among individuals with PD and can range from normal cognition to mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) and dementia (PDD). Beta-amyloid and tau brain accumulation, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are reported risk factors for cognitive impairment. Traumatic brain injury and pesticide and tobacco exposure have also been described. Genetic risk factors including genes such as COMT, AP

Factors influencing protective equipment use by mountain bikers: Implications for injury prevention.

AIM: To assess the attitudes of mountain bikers to the use of protective equipment and quantify the use of such equipment. METHOD: This was a prospective cohort study using an online questionnaire, offered to bikers participating in a series of Enduro races. The attitudes towards various factors that might contribute to a rider's choice to use protective equipment were quantified based on their responses to the questions. The actual reported use of various types of protective equipment was the outcome measure. The correlations between the factors and actual use were analysed for statistical s

Risk and Protective Factors in the Lives of Transgender/Gender Nonconforming Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Research suggests that transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) youth may be at greatly increased risk of high-risk health behaviors compared with cisgender youth, but existing studies are limited by convenience samples and small numbers. This study uses a large school-based sample of adolescents to describe the prevalence of TGNC identity, associations with health risk behaviors and protective factors, and differences across birth-assigned sex. METHODS: This study analyzes existing surveillance data provided by 9th and 11th grade students in Minnesota in 2016 (N = 81,885). Studen

Risk and Protective Factors for Middle- and Long-Distance Running-Related Injury.

BACKGROUND: Despite a rapidly growing body of research, a systematic evidence compilation of the risk and protective factors for middle- and long-distance running-related injury (RRI) was lacking. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to compile the evidence about modifiable and non-modifiable training-related and behavioral risk and protective factors for middle- and long-distance RRI. METHODS: We searched five databases (PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, and PsycINFO) for the dates 1 January 1970 to 31 December 2015, inclusive, for original peer-reviewed articles. The eligible designs were cro

In Search of Modifiable Risk and Protective Factors for Teen Dating Violence.

The present research explores the additive and interactive effects of anger or hostility (A/H), acceptance of violence (AoV), and constructive conflict resolution strategies (CRS) on the perpetration of physical and sexual teen dating violence (TDV). Adolescents completed surveys assessing physical and sexual TDV perpetration, A/H, AoV, and positive CRS. While the findings require replication with longitudinal data, the results suggest that developing interventions to modify AoV and A/H may have the potential to prevent instances of TDV perpetration among both boys and girls. The results for C

Childhood asthma: causes, risks, and protective factors; a role of innate immunity.

Childhood asthma is an umbrella of multifactorial diseases with similar clinical features such as mast cell and eosinophil infiltration causing airway hyper responsiveness, inflammation, and airway obstruction. There are various factors that are implicated in childhood asthma pathogenesis. A combined contribution of genetic predisposition, environmental insults, and epigenetic changes account for polarisation of the immune system towards T helper (Th) type 2 cell responses that include production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, IgE, and eosinophil infiltrates, shown to associate with asthma. Mechano-covalent protection of coagulation factor VIII by von Willebrand factor.

von Willebrand factor (VWF) is the protective carrier of procoagulant factor VIII (FVIII) in the shear forces of the circulation, prolonging its half-life and delivering it to the developing thrombus. Using force spectroscopy, VWF-FVIII complex formation is characterized by catch-bond behavior in which force first decelerates then accelerates bond dissociation. Patients with mutations in VWF at the FVIII binding site phenocopies hemophilia A and the most common mutations are of cysteine residues involving multiple disulfide bonds. From differential cysteine alkylation and mass spectrometry exp

Growth differentiation factor 11 is a protective factor for osteoblastogenesis by targeting PPARgamma.

Growth and differentiation factor 11 (GDF11) is a TGF-β family member that is expressed widely and plays multiple roles, including regulating axial skeletal patterning during development. However, the function of GDF11 in the bone is barely understood. Here we identify GDF11 as a potent regulator of bone homeostasis. GDF11 level is significantly decreased in the plasma and bone marrow of aging mice and mice with osteoporosis. Pharmacologic GDF11 gain of function leads to a striking increase in osteoblastogenesis and inhibits adipogenesis from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells by altering the

Helicobacter pylori virulence dupA gene: risk factor or protective factor?

Helicobacter pylori is the etiological agent of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer. The duodenal ulcer-promoting gene dupA, which is located in the plasticity region of the H. pylori genome, is homologous to the virB gene which encodes a type IV secretion protein in Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Studies have shown associations between H. pylori dupA-positive strains and gastroduodenal diseases. However, whether dupA acts as a risk factor or protective factor in these diseases remains unclear. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to verify the presence of the dupA gene in infectious

[Sun protection factor 50+ : Pro and contra].

The use of sunscreens with sun protection factors beyond 50 is controversial. In order to avoid misleading the consumer, several countries have already decided not to declare SPF beyond 50 on sunscreen products. Arguments against high SPF include the following: the risk of imbalanced protection, which could increase the risk of damage caused by longer-wave ultraviolet radiation; imparting a false sense of safety, which could lead to the extension of sun exposure times; health risks from higher concentrations of filter substances; and the only marginally higher blockade provided by high SPF sun

Arsenicosis: Is it a Protective or Predisposing Factor for Mental Illness?

OBJECTIVE: Chronic arsenic poisoning (Arsenicosis) is a global health risk, and it has been reported to improve the fitness, especially in altitudinal sickness in therapeutic dose. Scarcity of systematic study on psychiatric co-morbidities in Arsenicosis motivated us to conduct this research. The aim of this study was to estimate the co-morbid psychiatric disorders in patients with arsenicosis and to examine whether natural arsenic exposure and toxicity is protective or detrimental for mental health. METHOD: Out of 1477 arsenicosis patients aged 18 to 65 years, 1169 were finally assessed afte

Caffeine as a protective factor in dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Caffeine has well-known short-term stimulating effects on central nervous system, but the long-term impacts on cognition have been less clear. Dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are rapidly increasing public health problems in ageing populations and at the moment curative treatment is lacking. Thus, the putative protective effects of caffeine against dementia/AD are of great interest. Here, we discuss findings from the longitudinal epidemiological studies about caffeine/coffee/tea and dementia/AD/cognitive functioning with a special emphasis on our recent results from the Cardiovascular Ris
