Distinction between vaginal and cervical microbiota in high-risk human papilloma virus-infected women in China.

BACKGROUND: High-risk human papilloma virus (hrHPV) is the main causal factor of cervical precancer and cancer when persistent infection is left untreated. Previous studies have confirmed the vaginal microbiota is associated with HPV infection and the development of cervical lesions. The microbiota at different parts of the female genital tract is closely related but different from each other. To analyze the distinction between the vaginal and cervical microbiota of hrHPV(+) women in China, one hundred subjects were recruited, including 10 patients with HPV16/18(+) and cervical carcinoma, 38 p

Difference between kwashiorkor and marasmus: Comparative meta-analysis of pathogenic characteristics and implications for treatment.

Kwashiorkor and marasmus are two clinical syndromes observed in severe acute malnutrition. In this review, we highlighted the differences between these two syndromes by reviewing the data comparing kwashiorkor and marasmus in literature, combined with recent microbiological findings and meta-analysis. Depletion of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals were more severe in kwashiorkor than marasmus. This was consistent with the severe and uncontrolled oxidative stress associated with the depletion of gut anaerobes and the relative proliferation of aerotolerant gut pathogens. This relative prolifer

IL-17 signalling restructures the nasal microbiome and drives dynamic changes following Streptococcus pneumoniae colonization.

BACKGROUND: The bacterial pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae colonizes the nasopharynx prior to causing disease, necessitating successful competition with the resident microflora. Cytokines of the IL-17 family are important in host defence against this pathogen but their effect on the nasopharyngeal microbiome is unknown. Here we analyse the influence of IL-17 on the composition and interactions of the nasopharyngeal microbiome before and after pneumococcal colonization. RESULTS: Using a murine model and 16S rRNA profiling, we found that a lack of IL-17 signalling led to profound alterations i

[Tropical animal and human rickettsial infections].

Advances in molecular biology have provided tools that have greatly clarified our knowledge of rickettsial diseases. Most rickettsias have been reclassified in the alpha subgroup of proteobacteria. Four groups of rickettsias have been identified: the spotted fever group, the typhus group, Ehrlichia, and Bartonella. Although still considered as a rickettsia, Coxiella burnetti, the agent causing Q fever, has been reclassified separately in the gamma subdivision of proteobacteria. Recognition of rickettsial disease is still based mainly on clinical manifestations (rash, eschar, and scratching sor

Microbial community shift in a suspended stuffing biological reactor with pre-attached aerobic denitrifier.

Bioaugmentation is substantially determined by pre-attached communities in biological stuffing systems. However, the inevitable changes of microbial community shift occurred between pre-attached microorganisms on stuffing material and other existing communities in wastewater. Targeting at nitrogen removal in aerobic denitrification reactors, biological augmentation was built by polyurethane supporting material and aerobic denitrification bacteria of Pseudomonas stutzeri strains were primarily colonized. The total nitrogen removal reached a high efficiency of 77 ± 6%, resulting from a relative

Glycine betaine as a cryoprotectant for prokaryotes.

Osmoprotectants are low molecular weight, hydrophilic, nontoxic molecules that assist a cell under osmotic stress to stabilize its concentration of internal solutes. These properties are similar to compounds used as cryoprotectants for the preservation of prokaryotic cells during freezing. This study tested the ability of a common compatible solute, glycine betaine (GB), to act as a cryoprotectant. In a series of freeze-drying studies using a variety of prokaryotes, GB performed as well, or better than, two commonly used cryoprotectants, sucrose/bovine serum albumin (S/BSA) and trehalose/dextr

The global potential of freshwater microbes for plastic degradation.

Plastic pollution is becoming increasingly severe on a global scale, and the potential for biodegradation as a treatment method that is environmentally friendly merits greater attention. A significant number of genes that associated the degradation of plastic (PDAGs) have been identified, however, the distribution of these genes among microorganisms in global inland waters remains to be elucidated. A global-scale meta-analysis was conducted, incorporating approximately 1000 metagenome datasets of inland waters across seven continents. A total of 13,109 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) were

Intratumoral microbiota associates with systemic immune inflammation state in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The nasopharynx serves as a crucial niche for the microbiome of the upper respiratory tract. However, the association between the intratumoral microbiota and host systemic inflammation and immune status in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) remain uncertain. METHODS: We performed 5R 16S rDNA sequencing on NPC tissue samples, followed by diversity analysis, LEfSe differential analysis, and KEGG functional prediction. The analyses were based on indices such as AISI, SIRI, PAR, PLR, and NAR. Correlation analyses between microbes and these indices were performed to identify microbes assoc

Intratumour microbiota modulates adrenocortical cancer responsiveness to mitotane.

The infiltrating microbiota represents a novel cellular component of the solid tumour microenvironment that can influence tumour progression and response to therapy. Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare and aggressive endocrine malignancy for which mitotane (MTT) treatment represents the first-line therapy, though its efficacy is limited to a therapeutic window level (14-20 mg/L). Novel markers able to predict those patients who would benefit from MTT therapy are urgently needed to improve patient's management. The aim of our study was to evaluate the presence of intratumoural bacterial mi

[Microbial community of municipal discharges in a sewage treatment plant].

There are numerous microorganisms, especial pathogens, in the discharges. Those microorganisms are discharged into the river and sea through sewage outfalls, which results in possible health risks to coastal populations. And more attention should be paid to municipal discharges in developing countries. This study investigated the microbial community in the discharges by constructing 16S rDNA clones library and using the PCR-RFLP technology. Phylogenetic analysis of bacteria in municipal discharges showed that there were 59 species, which were divided into 11 classes. Proteobacteria accounted f

Methanotrophic bacteria.

Methane-utilizing bacteria (methanotrophs) are a diverse group of gram-negative bacteria that are related to other members of the Proteobacteria. These bacteria are classified into three groups based on the pathways used for assimilation of formaldehyde, the major source of cell carbon, and other physiological and morphological features. The type I and type X methanotrophs are found within the gamma subdivision of the Proteobacteria and employ the ribulose monophosphate pathway for formaldehyde assimilation, whereas type II methanotrophs, which employ the serine pathway for formaldehyde assimi

Differences in gut microbiota composition between ischemic stroke patients and healthy individuals.

OBJECTIVES: Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiota, acting through the gut-brain axis, may play a critical role in stroke pathophysiology. Dysbiosis, an imbalance of gut microbiota, has been associated with neuroinflammation and poor stroke outcomes. This study aimed to compare gut microbiota composition in ischemic stroke patients versus healthy controls to explore potential microbial changes linked to stroke. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted on 30 ischemic stroke patients and 30 healthy age- and
