[Proteus syndrome in the practice of an otorhinolaryngologist: a clinical case].

Described a rare clinical observation of a patient aged 18 years with chronic left-sided otitis media against Proteus syndrome. By this age, the patient underwent a large number of operations regarding the removal of lymphangiomas, hemlimfangiomas, angiokeratitis of the body, as well as several sanitizing surgery on the left ear. A review of domestic and foreign literature showed that this case can be considered unique.

Hypertrichotic patches as a mosaic manifestation of Proteus syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Proteus syndrome is an overgrowth disorder caused by a mosaic activating AKT1 variant. Hair abnormalities in Proteus syndrome have rarely been reported, and frequencies of such findings have not been elucidated. OBJECTIVE: To define the types and frequencies of hair findings in individuals with Proteus syndrome. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted of individuals with clinical features of Proteus syndrome and a confirmed pathogenic variant in AKT1 evaluated between November 1996 and June 2019 at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center. Medical records were rev

Proteus syndrome: report of a case with developmental glaucoma.

The purpose of this study was to report developmental glaucoma and pseudopapilledema in a patient with Proteus syndrome. We defined the presence of developmental glaucoma, right pseudopapilledema and myopia in a 4.5-year-old patient with Proteus syndrome. Marked right hemihypertrophy, lipoma, macrodactyly, and asymmetry of the limbs were observed on systemic examination. A cavernoma was also detected in magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. The patient underwent bilateral goniotomy surgery due to glaucoma. The surgical outcomes were satisfactory in both eyes. In conclusions developmental gl

Proteus Syndrome: a difficult diagnosis and management plan.

RATIONALE: Proteus Syndrome (PS) is an extremely rare congenital pathology that causes overgrowth of multiple tissues, in particular bone and fat, following a mosaic pattern. The estimated incidence is of less than 1 per 1,000.000 live births and represents a significant challenge to the pediatric and orthopedic surgeons in order to establish a diagnosis and to elaborate a management plan. OBJECTIVES: We had the opportunity of treating many children who were afflicted by overgrowth syndromes and have been previously misdiagnosed as Proteus Syndrome in our department of pediatric and orthopedi

[The Proteus syndrome: a rare cause of pulmonary emphysema].

INTRODUCTION: The Proteus syndrome is a rare genetic disease which is characterized by the overgrowth of tissues, especially bone, connective and adipose tissue. This condition is related to a somatic mosaic activating mutation in the AKT1 oncogene. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 25-year-old man, diagnosed with the Proteus syndrome at the age of 6 months. He exhibited an asymmetric overgrowth of the extremities leading to bilateral amputation of the legs at the age of 10 years. He was hospitalized for acute respiratory failure due to a bronchopulmonary infection. Severe bullous pulmonar

Approach in an adolescent Proteus male patient with megafoot.

Proteus syndrome is a rare overgrowth syndrome characterized by hemihypertrophy, lower limb asymmetry, hyperpigmentations, lipomas, and vascular malformation. In this paper, we present a new adolescent Proteus syndrome patient with bilateral megafoot. He was very successful in playing football and was very popular among his friends. We present this case for the psychological and surgical aspects of this very interesting entity. We also review the recent literature related with Proteus syndrome.

"Craniofacial and dental manifestations of a case of Proteus syndrome".

Proteus syndrome, which is a reference to the ancient Greek god Proteus, the Polymorphous, was called to the attention of pediatricians. Recognition of this syndrome has been difficult because of the variability of the syndrome's manifestations and because of its rarity. We describe a rare case of Proteus syndrome and we discuss its differential diagnosis. Our case presents with hemi facial hypertrophy, scrotal tongue, enamel hyperplasia as well as differential in the size of the dentition on both sides of the arch.

Proteus syndrome: a case with clonal chromosome aberration.

Proteus syndrome is a disorder characterized by overgrowth of multiple tissues, connective tissue nevi, epidermal nevi and hyperostoses with asymmetric involvement. The clinical expression of the disorder is extremely variable. Molecular pathogenesis of the syndrome is unknown but it is hypothesized that it resulted from a somatic alteration of a gene leading to mosaic effects that would be lethal if the mutation was carried in nonmosaic fashion, and this may explain the variability among patients. We report a new case who presented at birth with asymmetric hypertrophy of the bones and soft ti

Regional Proteus syndrome: report of an autopsy case.

An uncommon autopsy case involving Proteus syndrome with multiple hamartomatous lesions in a 52 year old woman is reported. At birth, hemihypertrophy was noted on the right side of the face. Leiomyoma of the urinary bladder was extirpated at 37 years of age. She died of sepsis due to a brain abscess. At autopsy, diffuse asymmetrical lipomatosis was noted on the right side of the face, scalp, lip, oral mucosa, tongue and on the left side of the cerebellar peduncle. Multiple meningiomas, cavernous hemangiomas and osseous hypertrophy overlapped in the intracranial regions. The present case is con

Myopathy of the Proteus syndrome: hypothesis of muscular dysgenesis.

The Proteus syndrome is a congenital disorder of growth regulation affecting tissues of mesodermal and ectodermal origin. It is expressed as hemihypertrophy, hemimegalencephaly, muscular overgrowth, verrucous epidermal nevi, haemangiomas and bony dysplasias. Muscle biopsies were examined at 7 and 10 yr of age from a girl with this disease. Several cytoarchitectural alterations of myofibres, proliferation of sarcolemmal nuclei, and other myopathic changes were demonstrated in regions adjacent to other with normal myofibres; the boundaries did not correspond to fascicular margins. A perinuclear

Pathology of osseous and genitourinary lesions of Proteus syndrome.

A male patient followed from the age of 3 to 25 years was eventually diagnosed as having Proteus syndrome. He was born with linear epidermal nevi of the neck and forearm and presented with macrodactyly of the right hand and progressive hemihypertrophy of the right lower limb recurring after multiple reduction operations. The bone ends showed disorderly overgrowth of hyaline and fibrocartilage mixed with collagen and bone, and early differential diagnoses included Ollier's disease. The child also had vertebral anomalies, scoliosis, a bony protrusion of the cranial vertex, and strabismus. In the

Specificity of the proteus antibody response in rheumatoid arthritis.

Antibodies to proteus were determined by indirect immunofluorescence in 146 serum samples from patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). An autoantibody screen was performed in the same samples and in 52 of these antibody titres to the viruses influenza A, adenovirus, rubella, and parvovirus were determined. There was no significant correlation between proteus antibodies and any of the other antibodies tested. Dividing the samples into those from patients with active (C reactive protein > 10 mg/l) and inactive RA showed that the only antibodies to be significantly increased in active RA were th

Comparison of serological reactions of Rickettsiae-infected patients and rabbit anti-Proteus OX antibodies with Proteus OX2, OX19 and OXK lipopolysaccharides.

The reactivity of anti-Rickettsiae human antibodies with Proteus OX cells is used as a presumptive rickettsial diseases diagnostic test Weil-Felix reaction. In presented studies we compare the reactivity of human anti-Rickettsiae and rabbit anti-Proteus antibodies with series of Proteus OX2, OX19 and OXK lipopolysaccharides (LPS). Polyclonal rabbit anti-OX2, anti-OX19 and anti-OXK sera reacted only with the homologous LPS--OX2, OX19 and OXK, respectively. The antibodies of Japanese spotted fever patients were less specific and reacted with OX2 as well as OX19 LPS. The antibodies of scrub typhu

[Serodiagnosis and immunological aspects of Proteus infection. III. Immunological, bacteriological and pathomorphological parallels in experimental Proteus intestinal infections, mono- and mixed].

The intraintestinal infection of 76 rabbits with P. mirabilis in a dose of 10(9) cells/kg, alone or in combination with Sh. sonnei, by the method modified by the authors caused a pathological process in the intestine, which was indicative of Proteus playing an independent role in the etiology of diarrheas. The process had its pronounced clinical, microbiological and immunological characteristics. Specific immunoglobulins, mainly H-antibodies, could be detected in different serological tests with the corresponding antigens, their pattern, level and avidity objectively reflecting the development

Proteus mirabilis abscess involving the entire neural axis.

Intramedullary spinal cord abscesses are rare and potentially devastating lesions usually associated with other infective processes such as bacterial endocarditis, or pulmonary or urogenital infection. We describe a 2-year-old girl who presented with an infected dermal sinus leading to an intraspinal abscess. This abscess eventually spread and involved the entire neural axis leaving her quadriparetic. Drainage of the abscess resulted in recovery and the child regained normal function of her limbs. To our knowledge this is the first documented case of an intramedullary abscess involving the ent
