Molecular docking and simulation studies of antiviral compounds against to fowl adenovirus type 4 receptor from - Psittacine bird - Melopsittacus undulates.

The adenovirus family of adenoviridae includes mammalian adenoviruses (mastadenoviruses) and avian adenoviruses (avi-adenoviruses), which are known to cause cold or flu and HPS. A wide variety of afflicted birds, including chicken, pigeon, and psittacine species, have been reported to carry aviadenoviruses. Fowl adenovirus, which causes hydropericardium syndrome (FAdV). The disease is highly contagious and quickly spreads from one flock to another and from one farm to another using mechanical and horizontal transmission paths as well as contaminated litter. The drug Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHE

Isolation and distribution of West Nile virus in embryonated chicken eggs.

West Nile virus (WNV) was identified from domestic psittacine birds by inoculating embryonated chicken eggs. Most of the embryos died 5 days postinoculation; flavivirus was detected in some by negative-staining electron microscopy. Immunohistochemistry performed on the embryos and their supporting structures detected the WNV antigen mainly in the chorioallantoic membrane, regardless of the inoculation route or passage number. WNV antigen was also found in the embryonic muscle (both skeletal and smooth muscles) and in multifocal areas of the skin. WNV was not detected in the viscera of the embr

Sudden death in ten psittacine birds associated with the operation of a self-cleaning oven.

Psittacine birds can develop severe and often fatal pneumonitis when exposed to various noxious inhalants. Toxicosis in these birds caused by inhalation of pyrolysis products produced from overheated polytetrafluoroethylene-coated cooking pans on stove tops is well known, but compounds emitted from burned foods and other materials can also be toxic. We present a case of fatal pneumonitis in 10 psittacine birds associated with the operation of an oven in the self-cleaning mode.

Adverse effects of gentamicin in scarlet macaws and galahs.

The adverse effects of administration of gentamicin (5 mg/kg of body weight, IM, q 12 h) for 7 days were studied in healthy scarlet macaws (Ara macao) and galahs (Eolophus roseicapillus; cockatoos). Polydipsia and polyuria developed in each species, but were greater and persisted longer in the cockatoos. Peak water intake in the cockatoos more than quadrupled, and remained increased for 23 days after cessation of gentamicin administration. Plasma aspartate transaminase activity increased significantly (P less than 0.05) after treatment in the macaws, and plasma aspartate transaminase and lacta

Variation in Plumage Coloration of Rosy-Faced Lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis): Links to Sex, Age, Nutritional Condition, Viral Infection, and Habitat Urbanization.

Expression of vibrant plumage color plays important communication roles in many avian clades, ranging from penguins to passerines, but comparatively less is known about color signals in parrots (order Psittaciformes). We measured variation in coloration from three plumage patches (red face, blue rump, red tail) in an introduced population of rosy-faced lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis) in Phoenix, Arizona, USA and examined color differences between the sexes and ages as well as relationships with several indices of quality, including disease presence/absence (infection with beak and feather di

Epidemiologic and laboratory observations of Chlamydia psittaci infection in pet birds.

Psittacosis was diagnosed in 13 (24%) of 55 pet bird submissions in the first 3 months of 1983, compared with 18 (17%) of 103 in 1982, 4 (4.6%) of 87 in 1981, and 3 (8%) of 36 in 1980. The numbers and types of birds in which psittacosis was diagnosed were 2 of 47 budgerigars, 8 of 45 cockatiels , 3 of 11 small parrots ( lovebirds , conures ), 20 of 116 medium-sized parrots (African Grays, Amazons ), 2 of 21 macaws , and 3 of 21 cockatoos . Thirty-nine percent of psittacosis-positive birds were received from pet bird owners, compared with 21% from pet shops, 18% from pet bird breeders and fanci

Recombinant Modified Vaccinia Virus Ankara (MVA) Vaccines Efficiently Protect Cockatiels Against Parrot Bornavirus Infection and Proventricular Dilatation Disease.

Parrot bornaviruses (PaBVs) are the causative agents of proventricular dilatation disease (PDD), a chronic and often fatal neurologic disorder in Psittaciformes. The disease is widely distributed in private parrot collections and threatens breeding populations of endangered species. Thus, immunoprophylaxis strategies are urgently needed. In previous studies we demonstrated a prime-boost vaccination regime using modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA) and Newcastle disease virus (NDV) constructs expressing the nucleoprotein and phosphoprotein of PaBV-4 (MVA/PaBV-4 and NDV/PaBV-4, respectively) to

Using next-generation sequencing to unravel the diet composition of Burrowing Parrots over the annual cycle.

Understanding the diet of an organism is crucial for disentangling its role in ecosystem function, and to unravel foraging behavior, population dynamics, competitive interactions among species and evolutionary processes. Furthermore, diet studies can be useful to better interpret environmental change and its impact on wildlife. Nevertheless, studying the diet of organisms that forage over large areas can be challenging. In such cases, next-generation sequencing of DNA in fecal samples can be used to identify dietary items consumed. Using this methodology, we investigated the diet composition o

Myelolipomas in exotic pets, research, zoo, and wild animals: description of 52 cases and literature review.

Myelolipomas are benign neoplastic lesions composed of adipose and hematopoietic tissue. Excluding dogs and cats, myelolipomas have been extensively described in the spleen of cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus), the liver of Goeldi's monkeys (Callimico goeldii), and birds in the order Psittaciformes. To better describe the species diversity and the clinical and pathologic relevance of myelolipomas, we conducted a detailed literature review and a retrospective multi-institutional study of myelolipomas, excluding cases diagnosed in dogs and cats. A total of 52 cases from 27 different species were diagn

Molecular Survey of Chlamydial Infections in Three Public Bird Collections in Tehran, Iran.

BACKGROUND: Avian Chlamydia spp. are capable of infecting different avian species and potentially cause the loss of valuable birds in rehabilitation facilities and zoos. They also pose a potential zoonotic risk to visitors and workers at such centres. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the occurrence of chlamydia in two different public aviaries and a rehabilitation centre. METHOD: One hundred and eight samples from 48 different avian species belonging to 11 different orders were collected. These samples were tested for chlamydia infection by detecting the Chlamydia 16s rRNA gene using p

Evaluating the reproductive status of the male budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus).

Limited knowledge about male psittacine reproduction reduces the success of breeding programmes. Within the scope of fecundity assessment, classification of male sexual status is essential for effective conservation of the species. The aim of the present study was to investigate the testes of male budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus), as psittaciform model species to verify their reproductive status by morphological and immunocytochemical examination. Using light microscopy, gonadal samples were categorized resulting in three reproductive states (active, intermediate, non-active). Calculation

Zoonotic diseases of common pet birds: psittacine, passerine, and columbiform species.

Zoonotic transmission of disease from pet birds is uncommon, but there are some recognized dangers. Most notably, Chlamydophila psittaci can be transmitted from pet birds to humans. Allergic responses to pet birds, including pneumonitis and contact dermatitis, have also been documented. Bite wounds from pet birds are rarely reported but can cause trauma and develop infection. The other diseases discussed here are considered potential zoonotic diseases of pet birds because of either isolated reports of suspected but unconfirmed transmission to humans or from reports of wild conspecifics being r

An outbreak of sarcocystosis in psittacines and a pigeon in a zoological collection in Brazil.

This report describes an outbreak of acute pulmonary sarcocystosis in different species of captive psittacines and in a Luzon bleeding-heart pigeon (Gallicolumba luzonica) in a zoological collection in Brazil. A majority of the birds were found dead and had exhibited no previous clinical signs. Grossly, pulmonary congestion and edema were the most-common findings. Enlarged and congested livers and spleens were also frequently observed. Microscopically, there was edema, fibrin exudation, congestion, and perivascular and interstitial lymphoplasmacytic infiltration associated with numerous sinuou

Use of iohexol as a gastrointestinal contrast agent in three dogs, five cats, and one bird.

Barium sulfate suspension is routinely used as contrast medium for upper gastrointestinal procedures. It has been contraindicated for use in cases of suspected perforation. In such instances, water-soluble iodides are recommended for use. Most of the water-soluble iodides available for use in veterinary medicine at this time are hyperosmolar. This results in in transit dilution of the contrast column. The dilution of the contrast agent within the intestines may prevent visualization of a perforation, especially if the perforation is in the distal portion of the small intestine. Iohexol a nonio
