Interposition of the colon between the kidney and the psoas muscle: a normal anatomic variation studied by CT.

The position of the bowel in the pararenal space was examined in relation to the kidney and the psoas muscle in 1203 abdominal computed tomographic (CT) examinations. The ascending colon was found between the lower kidney pole and the psoas muscle in 1.7% and the descending colon in 0.7% of the patients. This variation appeared more frequently in women, young adults, and individuals with less intrabdominal fat. Lateral displacement of the lower kidney pole was observed in 40% of the patients with this normal variation. These findings may be of value when interpreting urographic and abdominal C

Potential of whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to predict muscle size of psoas major, gluteus maximus and back muscles.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of trunk muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) using axial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered clinically meaningful for understanding several spinal pathologies, such as low back pain and spinal sagittal imbalance. However, it remains unclear whether trunk muscle mass (TMM) measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) can predict the trunk muscle CSA. The aim of this study is to determine if DXA-derived TMM is associated and predicts with CSA of paraspinal muscles and gluteus maximus measured using MRI in healthy volunteers. METHODS: A total of 48 heal

Decrease in Psoas Muscle Mass and Density Following Liver Transplantation Is Greatest in Patients With the Highest Muscle Quantity and Density Pre-Transplant.

Sarcopenia is a known predictor of morbidity and mortality after liver transplantation (LT); it has been assessed with computed tomography (CT) derived Psoas Area Index (PAI) and mean Hounsfield units (mHU). While literature is abundant regarding the adverse outcomes of liver transplant in sarcopenic patients, a paucity of data exists describing the change in psoas muscle area and density from pre- to post-liver transplant. One hundred and four adult liver transplant recipients had pre- and post-transplant CT scans analyzed with respect to PAI and mHU. Mean PAI pre-transplant was 7.94 and 6.99

Fat infiltration of the posterior paraspinal muscles is inversely associated with the fat infiltration of the psoas muscle: a potential compensatory mechanism in the lumbar spine.

BACKGROUND: The function of the paraspinal muscles and especially the psoas muscle in maintaining an upright posture is not fully understood. While usually considered solely as a hip flexor, the psoas muscle and its complex anatomy suggest that the muscle has other functions involved in stabilizing the lumbar spine. The aim of this study is to determine how the psoas muscle and the posterior paraspinal muscles (PPM; erector spinae and multifidus) interact with each other. METHODS: A retrospective review including patients undergoing posterior lumbar fusion surgery between 2014 and 2021 at a t

CT anthropometric analysis of the prognosis of traumatic brain injury: A retrospective study to compare between psoas muscle and abdominal skeletal muscle.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that skeletal muscle area (SMA) and psoas muscle area (PMA), markers for sarcopenia, are associated with the prognosis of many diseases. However, it remains unclear which of the two is a superior prognostic marker. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyse these markers in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: Patients with TBI [abbreviated injury scale (AIS) score of 4 or 5] were selected. Those with an AIS score of 4 or 5 for chest, abdomen, or extremity lesion were excluded. Clinical data, including Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS)

Artificial intelligence-based analysis of body composition in Marfan: skeletal muscle density and psoas muscle index predict aortic enlargement.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Marfan syndrome are at risk for aortic enlargement and are routinely monitored by computed tomography (CT) imaging. The purpose of this study is to analyse body composition using artificial intelligence (AI)-based tissue segmentation in patients with Marfan syndrome in order to identify possible predictors of progressive aortic enlargement. METHODS: In this study, the body composition of 25 patients aged ≤50 years with Marfan syndrome and no prior aortic repair was analysed at the third lumbar vertebra (L3) level from a retrospective dataset using an AI-based softwar

Psoas Muscle Trajectory and Survival After Liver Transplantation for Steatotic Liver Disease in Severe Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia after liver transplantation is poorly characterized in recipients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and severe obesity. We evaluated longitudinal changes in psoas muscle index (PMI) after transplantation and examined whether PMI trajectory was associated with post-transplant survival. METHODS: We performed a retrospective single-center study of adults with MASLD and body mass index ≥ 35 kg/m2 who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation between January 2015 and June 2023. PMI was measured on computed tomography at the L3 level befor

A Rare Infectious Complication Following Transrectal Prostate Biopsy: Spondylodiscitis With Contiguous Psoas Muscle Abscess.

Spondylodiscitis is a rare but potentially serious spinal infection. Although Staphylococcus aureus is the most common pathogen, Escherichia coli has been increasingly associated with genitourinary procedures such as transrectal prostate biopsy, even with antibiotic prophylaxis. We present the case of a 71-year-old man who underwent a transrectal prostate biopsy due to elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. He developed fever and lower back pain 24 hours after the procedure. Initial studies suggested a bacterial infection, and empirical antibiotic treatment was initiated. Lumbar magn

Lean Psoas Muscle Area Is Associated with Length of Stay After Lower Limb Revascularization for CLTI.

Background: Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) is associated with high morbidity and substantial healthcare utilization. Length of hospital stay (LOS) after lower limb revascularization is influenced by procedural complexity, but patient physiological reserve may also play a role. We evaluated whether CT-derived lean psoas muscle area (LPMA) is independently associated with LOS in patients undergoing revascularization for CLTI. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 234 consecutive patients treated with endovascular, hybrid, or open revascularization for CLTI (Rutherford 4-5) between 2018

Association between psoas muscle mass index and bone mineral density in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Patients undergoing dialysis are at risk of osteoporosis and sarcopenia because of mineral and bone disorders or malnutrition. Additionally, maintaining muscle mass is important to prevent osteoporosis. The psoas muscle mass index (PMI) was recently used to evaluate muscle mass. However, few studies have evaluated the association between the PMI and bone mineral density (BMD); therefore, we examined the association between PMI and BMD in the femoral neck (FN) of 80 patients (45 males, age, 71 (60-76) years; dialysis duration, 74 (36-140) months) undergoing hemodialysis. FN-BMD was measured usi

Automated psoas muscle segmentation: imaging features and surgical fitness in spinal metastatic lung cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Lung cancer's propensity for spinal metastasis leads to fractures, dysfunction, pain, and reduced quality of life. Spinal interventions are selectively offered to patients deemed fit for surgery. Sarcopenia, assessed by psoas muscle (PM) and whole-abdominal muscle (WAM) measurements, is proposed as a fitness marker, but consensus on thresholds and segmentation tools is lacking. This study aims to validate sarcopenia metrics as imaging biomarkers using both open-source and locally tailored neural networks in the context of bone-metastatic lung cancer and spinal surgery. Giant Hydatid Cyst Originating From Psoas Muscle Extending to the Iliac Bone: A Case Report.

Hydatid cysts, caused by the Echinococcus granulosus parasite, predominantly affect the liver and lungs, but can also impact other organs such as the kidneys, brain, and muscles. Infection occurs when individuals ingest eggs from contaminated food or water, leading to cyst formation primarily in the liver. While hydatid cysts are commonly found in various endemic regions, muscular involvement is rare, particularly in the psoas muscle. This report presents a case of a muscular hydatid cyst, describes its management, and emphasizes the need for awareness and prompt intervention. A 50-year-old ma

Three-dimensional numerical schemes for the segmentation of the psoas muscle in X-ray computed tomography images.

The analysis of the psoas muscle in morphological and functional imaging has proved to be an accurate approach to assess sarcopenia, i.e. a systemic loss of skeletal muscle mass and function that may be correlated to multifactorial etiological aspects. The inclusion of sarcopenia assessment into a radiological workflow would need the implementation of computational pipelines for image processing that guarantee segmentation reliability and a significant degree of automation. The present study utilizes three-dimensional numerical schemes for psoas segmentation in low-dose X-ray computed tomograp

Hydatid Disease With Psoas and Gluteal Muscle Involvement Causing Cauda Equina Compression: A Case Report.

Hydatid disease is a zoonotic infection caused by the Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm, primarily affecting the liver and lungs, and rarely involving muscle tissue. Humans are infected by ingesting eggs from contaminated food or water. Patients may present with painless, slow-growing masses, sometimes associated with nerve or vessel compression, especially in cases of muscle involvement. Diagnostic imaging techniques such as ultrasonography, CT scan, and MRI are essential for preoperative evaluation. Treatment involves surgical removal of the cyst with careful lavage to prevent recurrence, fol

Psoas Muscle Volume Is a Predictive Marker of Fatigue and Anorexia in Prostate Cancer Patients Treated with Enzalutamide.

INTRODUCTION: Enzalutamide is approved for the treatment of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. Adverse effects (e.g., fatigue and anorexia) are often observed and cause difficulty with continuous therapy; however, no clinical data describing which patients are more likely to suffer adverse effects were observed. Therefore, this study hypothesized that body composition, comprising body fat distribution and psoas muscle volume, may affect the occurrence of subjective symptoms (e.g., fatigue and anorexia) in prostate cancer patients treated with enzalutamide. METHODS:

Severe Atrophy of the Ipsilateral Psoas Muscle Associated with Hip Osteoarthritis and Spinal Stenosis-A Case Report.

Pathology of the lumbar spine and hip joint can commonly coexist in the elderly. Anterior and lateral leg pain as symptoms of hip osteoarthritis and spinal stenosis can closely resemble each other, with only subtle differences in both history and physical examinations. It is not easy to identify the origin of this kind of hip pain. The possibility of hip osteoarthritis should not be underestimated, as this could lead to an incorrect diagnosis and inappropriate spinal surgery. We report the case of a 54-year-old female with chronic right anterior and lateral leg pain who did not respond to repe
