Voluntary HIV testing among adults with severe mental illness: frequency and associated factors.

Adults with severe mental illness (SMI) are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. This study describes the frequency and associated factors of HIV testing among psychiatric outpatients (N = 150) in a small Northeastern city. A structured clinical interview assessed demographic, psychosocial, behavioral, and psychiatric factors. In the past year, 41% of participants were HIV tested. A hierarchical linear regression model revealed the following multivariate correlates: lower educational attainment, HIV risk behavior, greater social support, homelessness, non-psychotic disorder, borderline per

Suicide attempted by burning: a 10-year study of self-immolation deaths.

In a 10-year retrospective survey of 699 admissions to the Burns Centre of Verona, 31 patients (4.4 per cent) had self-inflicted burns. No sex difference was found, the mean age was 38 years, with 58 per cent of the patients in the 20-39-year age group. The mean burned surface area (BSA) was 41 per cent, and 12 patients (38.7 per cent) died: seven within the first 24 h. The other five patients died within 40 days (mean survival: 18 days). A large number of patients had a history of previous psychiatric treatment, six patients had previously attempted suicide. Four patients were drug addicts, t

Neurosyphilis: a case report.

Syphilis is a multisystem chronic infection caused by treponema pallidum. It can cause psychiatric disorders including depression, mania, psychosis, personality changes, delirium and dementia. With the introduction of penicillin into practice, the number of cases with syphilis decreased and its incidence increased with AIDS and HIV seropositivity. In this article, we present a case of neurosyphilis that manifested itself with neuropsychiatric symptoms.

Cognitive and noncognitive neurological features of young-onset dementia.

BACKGROUND: The rarity of young-onset dementia (YOD), the broad differential diagnosis and unusual clinical presentations present unique challenges to correctly recognize the condition and establish an accurate diagnosis. Limited data exist regarding clinical features associated with dementia prior to the age of 45. METHODS: We retrospectively assessed cognitive and noncognitive neurological characteristics of 235 patients who presented for evaluation of YOD to investigate the clinical characteristics of YOD compared to later-onset dementias and to identify clinical features associated with s

Visualizing BDSM and AIDS Activism: Archiving Pleasures, Sanitizing History.

The visual archive of AIDS and fetish activism is a rich resource for studying interlinkages between art and science, activism and public health, politics and medicine, pleasure and sexual health prevention. This article explores AIDS and fetish activism imagery from the first two decades of the Norwegian AIDS crisis. Interrogating the materiality and visual context of images - photographs, posters, flyers, and safer sex instructions - it maps out visualization practices in leather, BDSM and AIDS activism. AIDS and fetish imagery made some bodies, pleasures, and political goals visible - and r

HIV infection and psychiatric illness.

OBJECTIVE: To review the clinical features and current knowledge on the treatment of psychiatric symptoms and disorders in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. METHOD: We searched the PubMed database combining HIV/AIDS with different keywords for psychiatric diagnoses and symptoms (e.g. depression, mania, anxiety, psychosis, dementia, substance abuse) and for psychopharmacological treatment. The years covered by these searches included 1980 to 2008. RESULTS: Patients with HIV infection are at an increased risk of psychiatric illness. Major depressive disorder and subsy

[The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in the elderly].

Three cases of AIDS in patients older than 60 years of age are presented and are characterized by the delay in diagnosis even in the face of suggestive clinical manifestations because of the lack of suspicion leading to fatal short term evolution in all the cases. The importance of HIV infection and its characteristics at this age are discussed. Transfusion is the most frequent method of transmission. The clinical manifestations do not differ from those of other ages with neurological and psychiatric manifestations being significant as a form of presentation. Evolution is usually rapidly progr

Alcohol-induced disinhibition is associated with impulsivity, depression, and suicide attempt: A nationwide community sample of Korean adults.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-induced disinhibition (AID) is defined as a "loss of restraint over some form of behavior after drinking alcohol regardless of its amount". Although many previous studies have investigated on alcohol use disorder and suicide attempt, few studies have focused on AID and suicide. METHODS: A total of 9461 adults who had a history of drinking completed a face-to-face interview using the Korean version of Composite International Diagnostic Interview (K-CIDI) with the Suicide Module, and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale 11 (BIS-11). In this study, we defined the AID group as those wh

Assessment of mental capacity to consent to treatment in anorexia nervosa: A comparison of clinical judgment and MacCAT-T and consequences for clinical practice.

Informed consent requires adequate mental capacity to consent to treatment. Mental capacity (MC) to consent to treatment refers to the ability to make medical decisions. MC is assessed in a general psychiatric interview, but this clinical assessment is known to overestimate mental capacity in patients and the inter rater reliability is low. The MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool for Treatment (MacCAT-T) has emerged as the gold standard to assess mental capacity to consent to treatment. The MacCAT-T is a semi-structured interview designed to aid clinicians in this assessment and has shown goo

Navigating Defense Mechanisms in Alcohol Use Disorders: Implications for Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing.

This study aims to explore the various defense mechanisms employed by individuals with harmful alcohol use and their implications for psychiatric mental health nursing. Utilizing a literature review methodology, the chapter examines both mature and immature defense mechanisms as classified by Koukias (Principles of psychiatric nursing - mental health nursing (Αρχές ψυχιατρικής νοσηλευτικής - νοσηλευτική ψυχικής υγείας). Broken Hill Publishers LTD, Athens, 2018) in "Principles of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing." The findings reveal that mature mechanisms, such as altruism and sublimation, ca

Debating Euthanasia and Physician-Assisted Death in People with Psychiatric Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Over the last 30 years, medical assistance in dying (MAiD) including euthanasia (EU) and physician-assisted death (or suicide, PAS) has become the center of a large debate, particularly when these practices have involved people with psychiatric illness, including resistant depression, schizophrenia, personality, or other severe psychiatric disorders. We performed a review utilizing several databases, and by including the most relevant studies in full journal articles investigating the problem of MAiD in patients with psychiatric disorders but not in physical terminal conditi

Psychiatric symptomatology associated with contemporary peacekeeping: an examination of post-mission functioning among peacekeepers in Somalia.

Contemporary peacekeepers frequently confront complex stressors including the need to directly enforce peace between warring factions, to deliver humanitarian aid in the midst of political-social devastation, and to balance shifting rules of engagement. As such, it is proposed that participants may be at increased risk for the development of psychiatric distress. The present study examined the types of stressors encountered by 3,461 peacekeepers in Somalia, their current psychiatric functioning as measured by the Brief Symptom Inventory, and the relationship between exposure to various stresso

Community studies on adolescent substance use, abuse, or dependence and psychiatric comorbidity.

A literature review on community studies of adolescent substance use, abuse, or dependence (SU/AID) and psychiatric comorbidity yielded 22 articles from 15 studies with information on rates, specificity, timing, and differential patterns of comorbidity by gender, race/ethnicity, and other factors. Results revealed that 60% of youths with SU/A/D had a comorbid diagnosis, and conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (not attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) were most commonly associated with SU/A/D, followed by depression. Child psychopathology (particularly CD) was associate

An emergency psychiatry update.

A review of trends in emergency psychiatry since 1981 indicates that the scope and complexity of the field have greatly increased. Clinicians have found it useful to identify patient groups with special assessment and treatment needs, including adolescents, the elderly, victims of rape and of domestic violence, and repeat visitors to the emergency service. The spread of AIDS requires greater medical attentiveness by psychiatric emergency clinicians, and two recreational substances of abuse, cocaine and inhalants, have become increasingly popular. The use of psychotropic drugs in the emergency

Covert outpatient drug abuse. Incidence and therapist recognition.

One hundred ninety-five consecutive psychiatric outpatients were surveyed for covert drug abuse by a standardized technique for determining opiates, cocaine, barbiturates, and amphetamines in urine samples. On the basis of demographic variables, diagnostic information, and treatment course, patterns of abuse were defined for the 13.3 per cent with positive test results. Covert abusers demonstrated a higher incidence of adverse drug reactions and a less favorable therapy course than controls. Covert abuse was meaningfuly related to misdiagnosis, management problems, and therapist's response. De

Spatial Multiomics Analysis in Psychiatric Disorders.

The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of spatial multiomics analysis, including its definition, processes, applications, significance and relevant research in psychiatric disorders. To achieve this, a literature search was conducted, focusing on three major spatial omics techniques and their application to three common psychiatric disorders: Alzheimer's disease (AD), schizophrenia, and autism spectrum disorders. Spatial genomics analysis has revealed specific genes associated with neuropsychiatric disorders in certain brain regions. Spatial transcriptomics analysis has i

Psychiatric disorders in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a short note.

Traditionally, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has been defined as a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects the large motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord. The assumption that ALS is a pure motor disorder has been increasingly challenged by accumulating evidence about an association between ALS and psychiatric disorders. They often precede the onset of motor symptoms or psychoses; hallucinations and schizophrenia may occur as concomitant changes. These non-motor disorders have a close relationship with disease onset or may be related to a larger framework of neur

AIDS-related dementia: a case report of rapid cognitive decline.

Little is known psychometrically about the pattern of cognitive decline associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related dementia. Pre- and posttest results are presented to illustrate a case example of rapid cognitive decline. Increased psychometric assessment is recommended with additional examination of inconsistent results, which may be dismissed mistakenly as related to psychiatric symptoms. Implications for clinical practice and the role of the psychologist are discussed.

[Retroviruses, human tumors and autoimmune diseases].

Retroviruses are known to cause a variety of naturally occurring disorders in animals. These include various types of cancer, immune deficiencies, and degenerative and autoimmune disorders. In man, retroviruses are the causal agents of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and AIDS. In addition, serologic evidence suggests the involvement of retroviruses in a variety of other human disorders including leukemias and lymphomas, and autoimmune as well as psychiatric and neurologic disorders.
