Not that cloze: Sentence constraint is influenced by language and language dominance.

In the fields of language processing and prediction, cloze tests are used to establish sentence constraint norms. The validity of cloze test results depends heavily on how closely the pre-test population matches the main study population, and yet there is limited evidence on how sociolinguistic variables may influence sentence constraint. Here, we investigate how language and language dominance influence sentence constraint at the lexical level by conducting a cloze test across different language groups and comparing response entropy. In Analysis 1, sentence constraint was similarly high for S

Modeling complex narrative memory via sentence recognition: A marriage of distributional semantic models and an episodic model (MINERVA 2).

Recent research has integrated representations from distributional semantic models (DSMs) with traditional episodic memory models. While these integrated frameworks show promise in modeling single-word recognition, their applicability to the recognition of full sentences-particularly those embedded in complex narrative contexts-remains tentative. In this study, participants read short narratives and completed an OLD/NEW sentence recognition task, administered either immediately or after a delay of >10 hours. The recognition test contained four types of sentence probes: verbatim (matching the n

Productivity matters for the neural processing of novel words, but not existing ones.

Every day, we are likely to encounter novel words. We might even make those ourselves from familiar parts of words we know, creating something new and understandable, e.g., wordify, grantology. However, some combinations of these familiar parts will yield words we are more likely to use: berater seems better than penciler or plantist. This depends on the productivity of the words' parts and how they combine: some suffixes, like -er in dreamer, are very often used to make a new word, reinforcing their use in more novel words. When encountering a novel word, how does the productivity of its stem

Methodologies for assessing morphosyntactic ability in people with Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: The detection and description of language impairments in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's Disease (AD) play an important role in research, clinical diagnosis and intervention. Various methodological protocols have been implemented for the assessment of morphosyntactic abilities in AD; narrative discourse elicitation tasks and structured experimental tasks for production, offline and online structured experimental tasks for comprehension. Very few studies implement and compare different methodological protocols; thus, little is known about the advantages and disadvantages

The Effects of Script and Orthographic Complexity on the Handwriting and Spelling Performance of Children With Dyslexia.

Handwriting and spelling problems are often associated in dyslexia. However, the nature of their association is still unclear, and most of the existing research in this area is on deep orthographies (mainly English). The extent to which findings are applicable across languages is uncertain. This article examines the effects of script (manuscript/cursive) and orthographic complexity (complex/simple spellings) on the word dictation and word-copying performance of a group of 24 Italian children with dyslexia and handwriting difficulties (DH group, aged 8-10). Their performance was compared with t

[A phenomenon called Mondegreen].

BACKGROUND: The term Mondegreens describes misperceptions as defined by "slips of the ear", denoting that an utterance is perceived differently to what has actually been said. The analysis of these misperceptions permits a deeper insight into speech processing in the human brain. METHOD: A selective literature research in PubMed has been carried out for this systematic review. RESULTS: Altogether, 24 publications were found addressing the issue of auditory misperceptions. DISCUSSION: The analysis of Mondegreens enables a characterization of the different levels of speech processing as well

Cross-linguistic neuroimaging and dyslexia: a critical view.

Recent neuro-cognitive theories of dyslexia presume that all dyslexics have the same type of brain abnormality irrespective of the particular writing system their language uses. In this article, we indicate how this presumption is inconsistent with cross-linguistic investigations of reading and dyslexia. There are two main issues. First, the information-processing requirements of reading vary greatly across different orthographies. Second, it is known that even within a single orthography there are different subtypes of dyslexia. Consequentially, it cannot be the case, not even within a single

The activation of lexico-syntactic features in semi-lexical nouns.

The distinction between the processing mechanisms of content and function words has a long tradition in psycholinguistic research. However, the type of words that challenge this dichotomy, namely semi-lexical words, has gathered less attention. In German, the first noun in pseudo-partitive constructions like die Scheibe Brot ("the slice of bread") is classified as semi-lexical. This study investigated the processing of lexico-syntactic features in semi-lexical nouns compared to regular nouns. Native German speakers participated in a picture-naming task using the picture-word interference parad

Difficulty in writing Japanese semantic characters in a 9-year-old boy with Williams syndrome.

A 9-year-old boy diagnosed as having Williams syndrome was evaluated using psychological test batteries in order to clarify his ability in language and visual cognition. The subject had difficulty in writing some of the Japanese semantic characters (called Kanji) which he could otherwise read and understand. Although he could write the small components of which the Kanji characters were composed, he could not locate these correctly. This phenomenon is considered to be very similar to the difficulty in copying a figure observed clinically. The Kaufmann Assessment Batteries for Children clearly

Neonatal risk factors and later neurodevelopmental disturbances.

Background factors of developmental outcome in a group of 386 neonatal 'at-risk' infants and 107 controls were examined in a prospective nine-year follow-up study. Dichotomized outcome variables were computed for each of the assessments; neurodevelopmental, motor, psycholinguistic, cognitive and school progress. In the study group, 17 to 29 per cent were found to have significant problems, compared with 10 to 17 per cent of the control group. Children with low birthweight, neonatal neurological symptoms or several neonatal disorders were found to have most problems at the age of nine years. In

A category-selective semantic memory deficit for animate objects in semantic variant primary progressive aphasia.

Data are mixed on whether patients with semantic variant primary progressive aphasia exhibit a category-selective semantic deficit for animate objects. Moreover, there is little consensus regarding the neural substrates of this category-selective semantic deficit, though prior literature has suggested that the perirhinal cortex and the lateral posterior fusiform gyrus may support semantic memory functions important for processing animate objects. In this study, we investigated whether patients with semantic variant primary progressive aphasia exhibited a category-selective semantic deficit for

Effects of context and word class on lexical retrieval in Chinese speakers with anomic aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Differences in processing nouns and verbs have been investigated intensely in psycholinguistics and neuropsychology in past decades. However, the majority of studies examining retrieval of these word classes have involved tasks of single word stimuli or responses. While the results have provided rich information for addressing issues about grammatical class distinctions, it is unclear whether they have adequate ecological validity for understanding lexical retrieval in connected speech which characterizes daily verbal communication. Previous investigations comparing retrieval of no

The Role of Iconicity and Givenness in the Acquisition of Mandarin Before- and After-Sentences.

The acquisition of temporal clauses involves complex relationships between linguistic structure and cognitive development. This study examines the roles of iconicity and information structure (givenness) in Mandarin-speaking children's comprehension of before- and after-sentences. Using a forced-choice picture-selection task and an act-out task, we tested 45 children aged 3-5 years and 15 adults. The results revealed a robust advantage for iconic structure across both experiments. Children consistently showed better comprehension of iconic after-sentences than non-iconic before-sentences, a pa

A speaker-centric motivation for the use of optional adjectives during language production.

Speakers often make choices to alleviate planning difficulty during language production. We investigate the use of adjectives as optional words that speakers can use implicitly and strategically to provide extra planning time during periods of planning difficulty. Speakers described target objects in an array that either contained a different-colored competitor, so producing a color adjective was necessary to identify the target item, or did not have a different-colored competitor. Target items crucially differed in name agreement. Objects with high name agreement have a single, dominant label

She or He? Source of Errors in L2 Production of 3rd Person Singular Pronouns by Chinese Speakers of English.

A notorious problem in L2 English production is he/she confusion in 3rd person singular pronouns. Even proficient Chinese speakers of L2 English tend to misuse he for she in production, causing communication barrier regarding who is the antecedent. The present study investigates whether this processing problem in L2 production is associated with a few factors being investigated and provides practical solutions in L2 learning and teaching. We employed a story-listening-and-retelling production task to examine the effect of internal and external gender cues to discourse to elicit production by p

Prosodic Resolution of Quantifier Scope Ambiguity in Child Mandarin.

In the domain of quantifier scope interpretation, cross-linguistic differences have been observed between Mandarin Chinese and English. In Mandarin, doubly quantified sentences with the logical notation “∀x (P (x) → ∃y (Q (y) ∧ R (x, y)))” only permit a surface-scope interpretation, whereas the English counterparts allow both surface-scope and inverse-scope interpretations. However, it has been shown that unlike adults, Mandarin-speaking children can access both the surface-scope and inverse-scope interpretation of such sentences, suggesting that they initially allow a flexible scope relation.

Signatures of adaptive memory search: How early linguistic input shapes strategic use of lexical information.

Producing words during the semantic fluency task (e.g., "name all the animals you can in a minute") involves not only activating the relevant semantic representations but also being able to flexibly utilize phonological information to facilitate retrieval. However, the mechanisms by which individuals effectively use phonology as a latent cue during memory search remain understudied. In this study, we used a computational approach to examine the use of different lexical sources during memory search in two categorical domains (Animals and Foods) within the semantic fluency task. We captured the

Measuring the semantic priming effect across many languages.

Semantic priming has been studied for nearly 50 years across various experimental manipulations and theoretical frameworks. Although previous studies provide insight into the cognitive underpinnings of semantic representations, they have suffered from small sample sizes and a lack of linguistic and cultural diversity. In this Registered Report, we measured the size and the variability of the semantic priming effect across 19 languages (n = 25,163 participants analysed) by creating the largest available database of semantic priming values using an adaptive sampling procedure. We found evidence

Transcoding number words to typed multi-digit numerals: revisiting the strange case in Arabic bilinguals.

Language-specific effects are observed in the performance of numerical tasks. We evaluated the effect of the number word system (non-inverted; decade-unit format HDU vs inverted; unit-decade format HUD) in multi-digit numbers on transcoding performance among Arabic-Hebrew bilingual university students. Both languages are written right-to-left, but only in Arabic the sequence of number words is inverted, with units stipulated before decades (e.g. 'four-and-twenty'). Previously we (Hayek et al., Writing Systems Research 11:188-202, 2019) addressed the effect of the number word system on transcod
