Recent work suggests that feelings of social exclusion can attenuate feelings of agency, as indexed by temporal binding. However, existing evidence relies on heterogeneous manipulations of social exclusion and different operationalizations of temporal binding, raising questions about the generality of these effects. Across two pre-registered experiments, we examined whether the first-hand experience of social exclusion influences temporal binding as measured by the interval estimation task. Social exclusion and inclusion were manipulated using a within-subjects Cyberball paradigm administered

PURPOSE: This clinical focus article describes the development of a novel, remotely delivered counseling program for patients with hyperacusis. For many patients, seeking management of hyperacusis is limited by accessibility and affordability issues of care. By reducing these barriers, remote counseling has the potential to advance hyperacusis care and improve outcomes for many people suffering from hyperacusis.
METHOD: We created a 4-week remote counseling program that included asynchronous videos, hands-on activities and quizzes, handouts and resources for teaching coping skills and keeping

Previous studies have indicated that adolescents are susceptible to emotional cues and can benefit from peers' interpersonal emotion regulation (IER). However, it remains unclear how an adolescent regulator's personal traits shape an effective IER. The present study examined the role of regulator's trait empathy and social distance between the regulator and the target on IER effectiveness among adolescents and explored the underlying behavioral mechanism. A total of 420 adolescent dyads with ages ranging from 12 to 18 years participated (212 dyads of friends; 208 dyads of strangers). After rep

OBJECTIVE: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is marked by unstable relationships and fear of abandonment. Earlier studies suggest that patients with BPD are highly sensitive to social exclusion and show deficits in trust and cooperation. The hormone testosterone influences such prosocial behavior and regulates aggressive and caring behavior. Previous studies show elevated testosterone levels in female patients with BPD at baseline and after psychosocial stress, while results after social exclusion are missing.
METHOD: We investigated the effects of social exclusion on prosocial behavior (

Virtual reality (VR) interventions are receiving increasing attention from research seeking to promote harmonious intergroup relations. Despite this, the effectiveness of VR methods and the underlying mechanisms for enhancing intergroup relations yield mixed findings. The current research examined if a 360° immersive video where participants embodied an unhoused person could improve attitudes and behavioral intentions toward unhoused people by making participants experience social exclusion and its psychological repercussions. The study (N = 210) adopted a 2 × 2 between-subject design where pa

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a persistent and severe psychiatric condition in which individuals are unable to discard possessions, which results in considerable clutter. Individuals who hoard often endorse interpersonal difficulties and social isolation. However, little research has examined mechanisms that may help to explain this relationship. One possible mechanism is hostility, which is characterized by increased sensitivity to real or perceived social threats. The current study examined the relationship between hoarding symptoms and hostility across two undergraduate samples. In study 1, uns

A substantial delay for help-seeking is a serious problem for people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a heterogeneous and debilitating mental health condition. Stigma is a major barrier to treatment seeking and further cause social and occupational impairment. Lack of comprehensive research led us to examine the public's stigmatizing attitudes towards checking, contamination, sexuality, aggression, and religion-related OCD symptoms, compared to schizophrenia. After reading one of six random case vignettes, 621 adults completed social distance scale. Analysis of Covariance or ANCOVA in

Personal space regulation is a key component of effective social engagement. Personal space varies among individuals and with some mental health conditions. Simulated personal space intrusions in Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) reveal larger preferred interpersonal distance in that setting. These findings led us to conduct the first test of live interpersonal distance preferences in symptoms in BPD. With direct observation of subjects' personal space behavior in the stop-distance paradigm, we found a 2-fold larger preferred interpersonal distance in BPD than control (n = 30, n = 23). We

This article proposed that after social exclusion, individuals may react in a hostile or amiable manner, which depends on the type of categorical similarity cues that new groups possess. For excluded individuals, groups that resemble their excluder would provoke a defensive attitude. They also exhibit hospitality to groups that resemble themselves to gain inclusion. In Experiment 1, social exclusion was manipulated by providing a scenario story regarding an individual who was excluded and subsequently wanted to join in new groups. The results indicated that participants in the social exclusion

The literature examining the relations between economic situation and happiness has focused almost exclusively on a household's income as a proxy for economic situation and, accordingly, also focused chiefly on the adult population, excluding children and adolescents. To fill this gap, this study examines the relation between economic deprivation and happiness by using 2 alternative proxies: material deprivation and social exclusion. The study tests the relation of these measures to the most common measure for happiness-subjective well-being (SWB)-in a sample of Israeli 12-year-olds (N = 1,081

Other persons' laughter, normally perceived as a signal that persons are friendly and inviting others to approach, can also be perceived as a cue of social rejection. In this study, prerecorded laughter was placed in a realistic and personally relevant context, and participants' responses were related to gelotophobia, a trait predisposing to perceiving laughter as a cue of social rejection. Individuals with gelotophobia showed marked heart rate deceleration in response to the laughter stimulus, possibly indicating a "freezing-like" response. Moreover, cardiac responses to anger provocation by

Attitudes toward three types of disorders and a normal subject portrayed in vignettes were assessed among university students. The variables assessed were: perception of mental illness in the vignettes; desired social distance; emotional and physical burden expected; and expected negative influence on one's mental health from association with the type of persons portrayed in the vignettes. Analysis revealed that, in terms of variables assessed, the most "negative" ratings were recorded for the paranoid schizophrenic case and the most "positive" recorded for the normal subject. The simple schiz

Peer rejection is a distressing experience, which has been found to mediate the association between socio-emotional function and internalizing symptoms in neurotypical adolescents. To examine whether peer rejection statistically links socio-emotional function and internalizing symptoms in autistic adolescents, we measured their socio-emotional function (social skill, alexithymia, empathy), peer rejection, and internalizing symptoms. Autistic adolescents (N = 71), aged between 10 and 16 years (M = 12.73 years), completed questionnaires measuring peer rejection, socio-emotional function (alexith

Recent advancements in childhood cancer treatment have significantly improved survival rates, yet survivors continue to face considerable morbidity and mortality, rendering them a vulnerable population. Tobacco use, linked to heightened cancer risk, is discouraged among survivors for long-term health preservation; however, many persist in its use, mirroring rates among their non-cancer peers. Through 25 in-depth interviews, we explored the interplay of perceived risk and social integration on tobacco use post-treatment among both Latine and non-Latine young adult survivors. The purpose of this study was to use long-term longitudinal data to determine whether childhood shyness is associated with later negative social cognitions (rejection sensitivity and fear of negative evaluation) in emerging adulthood. Additionally, the prospective exacerbating roles of adolescent victimization and exclusion (self- and peer-reported) were examined. Participants were 119 Dutch individuals (50.5% male) from the Nijmegen Longitudinal Study, assessed at ages 9, 13, 16, and 21. Results showed a positive association between childhood shyness and emerging adult rejection sensitivity t

Friendships increase mental wellbeing and resilient functioning in young people with childhood adversity (CA). However, the mechanisms of this relationship are unknown. We examined the relationship between perceived friendship quality at age 14 after the experience of CA and reduced affective and neural responses to social exclusion at age 24. Resilient functioning was quantified as psychosocial functioning relative to the degree of CA severity in 310 participants at age 24. From this cohort, 62 young people with and without CA underwent functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to assess brain re

BACKGROUND: Vulnerability-stress models postulate that social stress triggers psychotic episodes in vulnerable individuals. However, experimental evidence for the proposed causal pathway is scarce and the translating mechanisms are insufficiently understood. The study assessed the impact of social exclusion on paranoid beliefs in a quasi-experimental design and investigated the role of emotion regulation (ER) as a vulnerability indicator and emotional responses as a putative translating mechanism.
METHODS: Participants fulfilling criteria for clinical high risk of psychosis (CHR, n = 25), con

Obtaining reliable and valid data on sensitive questions represents a longstanding challenge for public health, particularly HIV research. To overcome the challenge, we assessed a construal level theory (CLT)-based novel method. The method was previously established and pilot-tested using the Brief Sexual Openness Scale (BSOS). This scale consists of five items assessing attitudes toward premarital sex, multiple sexual partners, homosexuality, extramarital sex, and commercial sex, all rated on a standard 5-point Likert scale. In addition to self-assessment, the participants were asked to asses

Models of social anxiety and depression in youth have been developed separately, and they contain similar etiological influences. Given the high comorbidity of social anxiety and depression, we examine whether the posited etiological constructs are a correlate of, or a risk factor for, social anxiety and/or depression at the symptom level and the diagnostic level. We find core risk factors of temperament, genetics, and parent psychopathology (i.e., depression and anxiety) are neither necessary nor sufficient for the development of social anxiety and/or depression. Instead, aspects of children'

INTRODUCTION: The need-to-belong theory stipulates that social exclusion should influence cognitive processing. However, no longitudinal studies have examined its effects on cognitive processing (e.g., worry) associated with internalizing problems. In this study, we investigated whether social exclusion in school predicts worry from childhood to adolescence, and whether these associations differ by gender.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 655 Norwegian 10-year-olds who were assessed biennially from age 10 to 16 between 2013/2014 and 2020/2021. Assessments included teacher-reported data on soc
