Applicability of the Hebrew Bible to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Post-traumatic Growth.

Since the new millennium, biblical scholars have begun to reread certain writings in the Hebrew Bible through the concepts of post-traumatic stress disorder and post-traumatic growth. Some scholars believe such a reading is legitimate, whereas others think it problematic, and still, others hold a midway perspective. This article argues for the midway, the position that accepts the applicability of the Hebrew Bible to today's psychological concepts but calls for caution. Because ancient Israelites reacted to traumatic events and distinguished the human mind from the body like modern people, it

Quality of life and posttraumatic growth after adult burn: A prospective, longitudinal study.

Posttraumatic growth is positive psychological change that occurs beyond pre-trauma levels. Understanding the relationship between growth, stress and quality of life after burn improves understanding about the nature of postburn psychological growth and associated quality of life factors. This study aimed to determine the nature of these relationships, and whether posttraumatic growth changed over time in individuals. Two hundred and seventeen surveys were collected from 73 adult burn patients. The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Score, SF-36 quality of life and

Personal and work-related factors associated with post-traumatic growth in nurses: A mixed studies systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Nurses, assuming a wide range of clinical and patient care responsibilities in a healthcare team, are highly susceptible to direct and indirect exposure to traumatic experiences. However, literature has shown that nurses with certain traits developed a new sense of personal strength in the face of adversity, known as post-traumatic growth (PTG). This review aimed to synthesize the best available evidence to evaluate personal and work-related factors associated with PTG among nurses. DESIGN: Mixed studies systematic review. METHODS: Studies examining factors influencing PTG on c

Reversible growth hormone deficiency and delayed puberty triggered by a stressful experience in a young adult.

Growth retardation and delayed puberty developed in a young man after emotional trauma at age 12 years, three months. He had an eating disorder, was profoundly malnourished for several months, and then resumed eating spontaneously. Deficient secretion of growth hormone was documented during multiple arginine-insulin tolerance tests, and gonadotropin levels were low. These hormonal deficits persisted for many years in spite of good nutrition and lack of abuse, a course inconsistent with psychosocial dwarfism or effects of malnutrition per se. Later the patient spontaneously achieved normal heig

Longitudinal effects of COVID-19 posttraumatic growth on college adjustment, depressive, and anxiety symptoms.

Struggling through the stressful experience of the COVID-19 pandemic can foster posttraumatic growth (PTG), yet its lasting effects are not well understood. The study tracked 2,368 undergraduate and recently graduated students (56% female) between 18 and 30 years old (M = 21.61 years) over four online survey waves, six months apart (September 2022 to May 2024). Path analyses revealed that higher perceived PTG predicted better college adjustment and fewer depressive symptoms one year later, but only among female students. PTG had no effect on anxiety symptoms. COVID-19 stress was linearly assoc

Factors Influencing Posttraumatic Growth in Mothers of Children With Cancer.

The psychological adaptation of mothers of children with cancer has a significant impact on the management of the disease. As the mothers' psychological adaptation and positive emotions have an impact on the psychological adaptation of the children, it is important to facilitate the positive growth of the mothers during their adjustment to their children's illness. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the factors that influence posttraumatic growth (PTG) in these mothers. This research aimed to test the variables of PTG based on an existing theoretical model of PTG in mothers of children wi

The psychosocial consequences of short stature: a review of the evidence.

The advent of biosynthetic growth hormone (GH) has been accompanied by a transformation in the clinical management of youths with short stature. An important--if not always explicitly stated--goal of endocrine therapies is an improvement in the psychological adaptation of individuals with short stature. Negative stereotypes regarding short stature constitute a potential source of psychosocial stress for the affected child and, in turn, the entire family. Nevertheless, studies have demonstrated that the psychological adaptation of individuals who are shorter than average is largely indistinguis

Meaning-making while staying connected matters in psychological adaptation during pandemic: a longitudinal moderated mediation study.

Adversity may bring about both negative and positive changes in psychological adaptation. Although there is mounting evidence regarding the psychological distress during the pandemic, the other side of posttraumatic change, posttraumatic growth (PTG) and its predictors are relatively underexamined. Moreover, there is a paucity of longitudinal investigations that examined intra- and interpersonal predictors responsible for both sides of psychological adaptation. Therefore, this study comprehensively examined the longitudinal relationship among cognitive processing, social support, and adaptatio

Uncertainty in Illness and Posttraumatic Growth among Young and Middle-Aged Stroke Patients: A Mediation Model of Coping Styles and Rumination.

BackgroundStroke keeps on the rise in young and middle-aged individuals. This group may experience positive psychological changes, such as posttraumatic growth (PTG), which facilitates recovery. However, PTG in young and middle-aged stroke patients is not yet fully understood in China. This study aims to examine the associations between uncertainty in illness and PTG among young and middle-aged patients with stroke, and to explore whether coping styles and rumination are associated with this relationship.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2022 to February 2023 in a ter

Gained social identification and sense of shared experience after flood exposure: Psychosocial pathways to post-traumatic symptoms and growth.

This research provides the first quasi-experimental and longitudinal examination of the Social Identity Model of Traumatic Identity Change among individuals affected by the September 2024 flood in Poland. Advancing the state of the art, we analyzed the emergence of identification with flood-affected people and extended the model by incorporating the sense of shared experience (SSE) within this group. Surveys were completed 3 months (N = 630) and 7 months after the flood (N = 315). The results indicated that the severity of flood exposure was linked with higher post-traumatic stress (PTS) and p

Posttraumatic growth after perinatal loss: A systematic review.

Perinatal loss is a potentially painful event for parents and a grief that is often not recognised socially. Research has widely shown that grief responses can coexist with posttraumatic growth responses. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the available evidence of studies investigating posttraumatic growth in people who have suffered a perinatal loss. A search was conducted in PROQUEST and Web of Science for articles published from 2011 to 2021. After reviewing 10 selected articles, it was found that the participants showed moderate levels of posttraumatic growth, mostly in the d

Posttraumatic growth in people affected by an occupational accident: A longitudinal multilevel model of change.

This study analyzed a predictive model of posttraumatic growth (PTG) in a cohort of 244 workers affected by an occupational accident. A longitudinal design with three points in time (i.e., 1, 6, and 12 months after the accident) was used. PTG, posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), subjective severity of the event, deliberate rumination, and seeking social support were evaluated. In addition, time since the accident, age, and gender were included as predictors in our model. Deliberate rumination and seeking social support significantly predicted PTG trajectory in a multilevel model. Practical c

Growth hormone deficiency and quality of life.

Quality of life research in adults with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is a developing field. It has been recognised that adults with childhood onset GHD suffer social and psychological disadvantages. The effects of GHD of adult onset have only been shown relatively recently. Assessment of these patients, using measures of physical and psychological well-being, has demonstrated that adults with GHD perceive themselves as much less healthy compared with matched controls. The majority of studies investigating the effects of growth hormone replacement therapy indicate that quality of life improv
