History and current concepts in the analysis of facial attractiveness.

BACKGROUND: Facial attractiveness research has yielded many discoveries in the past 30 years, and facial cosmetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgeons should have a thorough understanding of these findings. Many of the recent studies were conducted by social, developmental, cognitive, and evolutionary psychologists, and although the findings have been published in the psychology literature, they have not been presented in a comprehensive manner appropriate to surgeons. METHODS: The author reviews the findings of facial attractiveness research from antiquity to the present day and highlights

Unpacking leader feedback-seeking behavior: A cost-value perspective on workplace coaching, psychological safety, and Honesty-Humility.

Leaders are encouraged to seek feedback as a pathway to growth, yet not all feedback-seeking reflects genuine developmental intent. Although the cost-value model of feedback-seeking recognizes both informational and image-related motives, little theory explains when, and for whom, each motive dominates leader feedback-seeking behavior (FSB). This conceptual paper addresses that gap by integrating workplace coaching, psychological safety, and the personality trait of Honesty-Humility (HH) within the cost-value model. Workplace coaching is theorized to raise the perceived value of leader FSB thr

Current Management of Pediatric Vitiligo.

Vitiligo is a common inflammatory disorder with worldwide prevalence of 0.4-2 % of the population, with half of cases beginning in childhood. The management of childhood vitiligo should be tailored to avoid negative effects on the overall growth and psychological development of the patient. Therapy of vitiligo in childhood is chosen based on the location of the lesions, lesion age, and extent of lesions in the context of the child's age and the developmental status of the child. There are four age categories in childhood vitiligo: [1] infantile and toddler (rare) (ages 0-3 years), [2] ages 4-8

A longitudinal neuroimaging study of adolescent girls' mentalizing and perspective-taking tendencies.

Research in developmental psychology suggests that self-concept formation and mentalizing capacities, along with their neural foundations, show significant developmental change during adolescence. Perspective-taking tendencies are also believed to increase in adolescence, supporting the refinement of prosocial behavior and the demands of increasingly complex social relationships. To explore the development of, and relationship between, these processes in adolescence, early adolescent girls (N = 172) completed a measure of perspective-taking tendencies and a self-evaluation fMRI task at two wav

A Longitudinal Investigation of Cognitive Self-schemas across Adolescent Development.

Research in developmental psychology highlights youth's self-schemas as one possible pathway to improve adolescents' functioning and promote positive developmental outcomes. Despite this, the trajectory of positive and negative self-schemas is relatively understudied. This study addresses this limitation by empirically examining the trajectory of self-schemas in a community sample of 623 youth (M = 13.04 years; 54% female; 49% African American, 4% Biracial, 47% European American) who were followed over a seven-year period. Caregivers completed measures of parenting practices, maternal ruminati

Psychological Health of the Adolescent Transplant Recipient.

BACKGROUND: Solid organ transplant recipients experience a period of unique vulnerability during adolescence, when normative developmental changes intersect with health-related variables to influence psychological health. METHODS: This article builds on previous reviews of psychological health in solid organ transplant recipients and proposes opportunities for clinical intervention during adolescence. RESULTS: Transplant recipients often experience neurocognitive changes, particularly with respect to executive functions, that impact health management tasks and autonomous care. Recipients sho

Robot in a crib: How a playing robot helps us understand sensorimotor contingency learning.

Learning sensorimotor contingencies-that is, the link between one's actions and their sensory effects-is fundamental to developing body knowledge, understanding causality, and developing a sense of agency. In developmental psychology, this process is classically studied using the mobile paradigm, where infants learn that movement of a limb causes motion of a connected mobile. To expand our understanding of how infants learn this, we tested an embodied computational model that learns through two biologically inspired mechanisms: prediction and curiosity. Implemented on the child-sized iCub huma

Flexibility in abstract thought: Context-dependent representations of integer magnitude.

Negative numbers are challenging because they lack direct perceptual referents and require reasoning about magnitude in a relational, bi-directional manner. This review examines how people represent and use integer magnitude on the mental number line, a cognitive tool that learners initially use for positive numbers, focusing on the flexibility with which this tool is deployed across contexts. Synthesizing evidence from cognitive psychology, developmental science, and mathematics education, we evaluate three broad accounts: componential accounts, which treat sign and magnitude as separable sym

Movement-Anchored Emotional Memory: An Embodied Neuropsychological Framework.

This article advances a clinically oriented neuropsychological framework and introduces the construct of movement-anchored emotional memory, proposing that bodily movement constitutes a core organizing dimension of emotional memory encoding, reactivation, and transformation. Integrating embodied cognition, affective and social neuroscience, developmental psychology, trauma research, and neuropsychology, emotional memory is conceptualized as emerging through dynamic coordination among sensorimotor, interoceptive, affective, relational, and contextual processes. Movement contributes temporal, sp

Violence and Abuse in Competitive Sports Abstract. Violence and abuse in competitive sports, such as physical and emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect and sexual abuse, affect children, adolescents and adults alike and lead to severe physical, psychological and social consequences. In current medical and educational care concepts of athletes, there is a lack of consistent integration of sports/psychiatric, clinical psychological and psychotherapeutic, developmental pediatric and developmental psychological expertise. Problem areas arise from fine lines between harassment, non-physic

Untying the Knot: Associations Between Personality Functioning and Psychological Distress in an Outpatient Sample of Youth.

Impairments in personality functioning often emerge during developmental processes in youth, a period in which the experience of psychological distress peaks. Both impairment in personality functioning and psychological distress are related to general psychopathology and insight in their developmental trajectories may contribute to early detection of severe mental health problems. This study is aimed at examining the temporal dynamics between personality functioning and psychological distress in an outpatient sample of youth (Mage = 20.33) across two timepoints spaced 6 months apart. Mean diff

Growing up with the families of β-thalassaemia major using an accelerated longitudinal design.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: It is difficult for a single investigator to study the psychosocial changes that occur over the life span of an individual affected with a chronic illness like β-thalassaemia major. Therefore, a developmental epidemiological perspective is required to understand the chain of events and problems of psychological nature. We aimed to construct the picture of developmental epidemiology for psychosocial aspects in families of β-thalassaemia major patients attending a tertiary care hospital in north India. METHODS: The accelerated longitudinal design was used. The sample co

Psychosocial factors affecting the etiology and management of type 1 diabetes mellitus: A narrative review.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is one of the most common chronic diseases in children and adolescents worldwide. Its etiopathogenesis results from the interplay of genetic and environmental variables. Among the latter, psychological stress has been implicated in disease onset as well as disease management. Various studies, including large population-based studies, have highlighted the role of stressful life events in the etiopathogenesis of T1D. In this article, we also emphasize the importance of attachment in the early child-caregiver relationship, which can be seen as a measure of the quality of the

A new framework for understanding stress and disease: the developmental model of stress as applied to multiple sclerosis.

This paper proposes a new model of stress that integrates earlier models and adds insights from developmental psychology. Previous models describe the behavioral and physical effects of stress events, but have not explained the translation of experiences into stress itself. The Developmental Model of Stress shows how psychosocial developmental challenges in childhood create persistent negative beliefs and behaviors that increase threat perception and maladaptive stress responses. These developmental challenges produce early psychological and physiological predispositions for increased stress r

Management of acute psychologic problems in pediatric oncology.

Several psychologic issues in pediatric oncology are addressed and case illustrations of psychologic intervention for selected problems are offered. Psychologic intervention must take into account the patient's perception of his illness, the patient's developmental level, the parents' coping mechanisms, the dynamics of the child's emotional and behavioral responses, the staff's perception of the problems, and the community's capacity for reintegration of the patient. Each of these issues is addressed by use of case examples to demonstrate important aspects of psychosocial intervention.

Children's early signs and developmental trajectories of psychotic-like experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Children who experience persistent psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are at a higher risk of developing psychotic disorder later in life. The developmental trajectories of PLEs are influenced by various factors. Therefore, it is important to identify early characteristics that can distinguish and predict between different developmental trajectories of PLEs. METHODS: Using PLEs scores from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) data across three waves, we categorized participants into five distinct PLEs trajectories groups: persistent group (n = 47), remitting group (n
