Psychomotor seizures, arterio-venous malformation and the olfactory reference syndrome. A case report.

A case history is reported of a 44-year-old man with a 6-year history of psychomotor seizures. For the past year he had described persistent olfactory hallucinations of an unpleasant nature which he referred to himself. In many respects these symptoms conform to the pattern observed in the olfactory reference syndrome, a recently described but apparently quite discrete psychiatric disorder; there were, however, certain atypical features. At a later stage unilateral anosmia was noted. Radiological examination then demonstrated an arterio-venous malformation in the right frontal lobe. The relati

Dopaminergic dysfunction in the left putamen of patients with major depressive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Dopaminergic transmission impairment has been identified as one of the main neurobiological correlates of both depression and clinical symptoms commonly associated with its spectrum such as anhedonia and psychomotor retardation. OBJECTIVES: We examined the relationship between dopaminergic deficit in the striatum, as measured by 123I-FP-CIT SPECT imaging, and specific psychopathological dimensions in patients with major depressive disorder. METHODS: To our knowledge this is the first study with a sample of >120 subjects. After check for inclusion and exclusion criteria, 121 (67

[A case of arima syndrome (cerebro-oculo-hepato-renal syndrome) in long-term survival with hemodialysis].

We report a long-term survival case of Arima syndrome requiring hemodialysis. The patient, now 25 years of age, was hypotonic at birth. She was diagnosed with Dandy-Walker syndrome at an early month of age when she underwent posterior cranial fossa cystectomy and vermian agenesis was confirmed. With some delay in psychomotor development, she showed the development of language comprehension and meaningful speech and started to walk without aid at the age of 7 years. Polycystic kidneys were found at 11 years, and Arima syndrome was diagnosed at 16 years when she presented herself to our hospital

Cardiac conduction disorders in six infants with "near-miss" sudden infant deaths.

Cardiac conduction disorders caused sudden serious illnesses in six infants that might have been fatal if diagnosis and treatment had been delayed. These cases provide circumstantial evidence to support a link between cardiac conduction disorders and some sudden infant deaths. A further potential long-term effect of these disorders is illustrated in one child in whom psychomotor retardation seemed to develop after an episode of cerebral hypoxia that was probably by an arrhythmia associated with the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Cardiac conduction disorders may be detected by routine neonatal

A Nine-Year-Old Girl With Cornelia de Lange Syndrome: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Cornelia de Lange syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects multiple systems. It is characterized by growth delays and psychomotor retardation associated with various anomalies, including hirsutism, facial dysmorphism, cardiac abnormalities, upper-extremity malformations, and gastrointestinal disorders. Early detection and appropriate management of associated disorders are essential for achieving favorable outcomes. We present our first case of Cornelia de Lange syndrome, diagnosed at the age of nine years in the Pediatrics Department of Mohammed VI University Hospital in Oujda, Morocco.

A three-dimensional model of neural activity and phenomenal-behavioral patterns.

How phenomenal experience and behavior are related to neural activity in physiology and psychopathology represents a fundamental question in neuroscience and psychiatry. The phenomenal-behavior patterns may be deconstructed into basic dimensions, i.e., psychomotricity, affectivity, and thought, which might have distinct neural correlates. This work provides a data overview on the relationship of these phenomenal-behavioral dimensions with brain activity across physiological and pathological conditions (including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, attention-deficit/hype

Toward Targeted ECT: The Interdependence of Predictors of Treatment Response in Depression Further Explained.

OBJECTIVE: Several clinical variables assumed to be predictive of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) outcome in major depressive disorder show substantial interrelations. The current study tries to disentangle this interdependence to distill the most important predictors of treatment success to help improve patient-treatment matching. METHODS: We constructed a conceptual framework of interdependence capturing age, episode duration, and treatment resistance, all variables associated with ECT outcome, and the clinical symptoms of what we coin core depression, ie, depression with psychomotor agitat

Melancholia as Predictor of Electroconvulsive Therapy Outcome in Later Life.

OBJECTIVES: In clinical practice, particularly melancholic depression benefits from electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), albeit research melancholia criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is not conclusive. We compared clinical characteristics and ECT outcome of melancholic and nonmelancholic depression, here defined by psychomotor symptoms. METHODS: One hundred ten depressed older in-patients treated with ECT were included in the Mood Disorders in Elderly treated with ECT study. The CORE was used for the assessment of psychomotor symptoms, with a score of 8

How olfaction disorders can cause depression? The role of habenular degeneration.

The removal of bilateral olfactory bulbs (OBs) can result in serious behavioral, neurochemical, neuroendocrine, and neuroimmune alterations in depressed patients. However, there is little information on how olfactory bulbectomy (OBX) leads to depression. Habenular nuclei and their connections are important in the regulation of psychomotor and psychosocial behaviors through afferent impulses of the olfactory system. Therefore, we investigated whether OB lesions lead to habenular degeneration. We used a sample of 50 rats (25 female and 25 male) for this study. Of these rats, five male and five f

Cognitive abilities and psychosocial functioning in bipolar disorder: findings from the BIPLONG study.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder is associated with impairments in cognition and psychosocial functioning. Although these impairments occur frequently, often persist during euthymic times, and worsen quality of life, the impact of cognitive abilities on functioning has not yet been fully elucidated. METHODS: The current study investigated the effects of cognitive domains (attention/psychomotor speed, verbal learning/memory, executive function) on psychosocial functioning cross-sectionally. Data from 210 euthymic individuals with bipolar disorder [101 female, 109 male; M (age) = 44.47; SD (age) =

Executive function in children with Tourette syndrome and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: Cross-disorder or unique impairments?

Findings of executive functioning deficits in Tourette syndrome (TS) have so far been inconsistent, possibly due to methodological challenges of previous studies, such as the use of small sample sizes and not accounting for comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), or medication use. We aimed to address these issues by examining several areas of executive functioning (response inhibition, attentional flexibility, cognitive control, and working memory) and psychomotor speed in 174 8-to-12-year-old children with TS [n = 34 without (TS-ADHD) an

Cerebellar hypoplasia, hypergonadotrophic hypogonadism, retinitis pigmentosa, alopecia, microcephaly, psychomotor retardation, and short stature: "D-CHRAMPS syndrome".

We here report a rather novel syndrome of dysmorphic features, short stature, microcephaly, alopecia, psychomotor retardation, retinitis pigmentosa and secondary amenorrhoea. This may present a new complex multisystem disorder distinct from those reported in the literature and we propose the acronym D-CHRAMPS for this novel disorder.

Asenapine for aggressive behaviours in psychiatric disorders: a systematic review of efficacy and real-world effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Clinical decision-making for the pharmacological treatment of aggressive behaviour in psychiatry remains challenging. Asenapine, a second-generation antipsychotic with a higher affinity for dopamine D4 than for D2 receptors, may become a treatment option, although this remains to be demonstrated. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across biomedical databases according to PRISMA Reporting Items for Systematic Review. We aimed to examine the efficacy and effectiveness of asenapine in the management of aggressive behaviours including psychomotor agitation, hostility, irritabi

Agenesis of the corpus callosum with interhemispheric cyst.

The radiographic features of a cerebral malformation are presented. The major findings are absence of the corpus callosum, a large interhemispheric cyst, and ventricular dilatation. This cerebral dysplasia originates in the first trimester of fetal development resulting in gross psychomotor deficiencies and seizure disorders. Diagnosis which depends predominantly on encephalographic or ventriculographic findings enables formulation of a guarded prognosis.

[Psychomotor epilepsy: phenomenology, localization, pathogenesis and therapy].

Next to tonic-clonic seizures psychomotor (complex focal) seizures are the most common form of all epileptic seizures, except in infancy where they are seen rarely. Differently from generalised non convulsive seizures (like petit mal absences), their first appearance has no typical age limit, however, their proportion to other forms of seizures increases in adolescence and adults especially between the third and fifth decade of life. The main symptom is the disorder of consciousness which lasts at least more than half a minute, normally several minutes in completely distinct seizures, which do

Response to rehabilitation of children and adolescents with epilepsy.

One hundred fifty-six children and adolescents with epilepsy from six Italian rehabilitation units were retrospectively enrolled to define the proportion of patients with epileptogenic developmental disorders who benefit from comprehensive rehabilitation programs and to identify factors predicting treatment response. The rehabilitation programs were classified as neuromotor, psychomotor, and speech and language. For each program, the response was coded as present or absent according to the caring physician's judgment. Selected demographic and clinical variables were correlated to treatment res

Psychomotor Delay in a Child with FGFR3 G380R Pathogenic Mutation Causing Achondroplasia.

Achondroplasia (ACH) is a hereditary disorder of dwarfism that is caused by the aberrant proliferation and differentiation of chondrocyte growth plates. The common findings of macrocephaly and facial anomalies accompany dwarfism in these patients. Fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 ( FGFR3 ) gene mutations are common causes of achondroplasia. The current study presents a case of 2-year-old male child patient presenting with phenotypic characteristics of ACH. The interesting finding of the case is the presence of psychomotor delay that is not very common in these patients. Clinical exome seque
