Psychophysiological responses of borderline hypertensives in two experimental situations.

Given the contradictory reports concerning psychophysiological reactivity of hypertensives this issue was reexamined. In contrast to the large majority of studies, the hypertensive sample should not be made up of patients in medical care and the control group should be comparable in all relevant aspects other than blood pressure. Twelve male subjects with blood pressure values in the borderline range and 12 normotensive controls were recruited from a blood donation program. Experiments consisted of two parts with baseline, stress and follow-up. Stressors were a short distressing movie and ment

Psychophysiological aspects of increasing resistance to space motion sickness.

One of the actual and difficulty solved problems of the adaptation period to microgravitation is space motion sickness (MS) that has the negative influence on well-being and performance of crewmembers in the initial and highly crucial phase of the orbital flight. Among the prophylactic measures for decrease of the unfavourable influence of space MS the preflight training is of great importance, and its role in perspective undoubtedly will grow in connection with increase of the number of crewmembers. During the last years several authors received experimental materials evidenced that as a base

Psychophysiological investigations of patients with unilateral symptoms in the hyperventilation syndrome.

Anxiety states sometimes lead to hyperventilation (HV) which may, in turn, give rise to a variety of physical symptoms. One way in which HV may present is with unilateral somatosensory symptoms, often left-sided. We report nine such cases. The mechanisms of lateralisation was examined using EEG and bilateral somatosensory evoked potentials which were carried out before and after HV. No difference in conduction velocity was found between affected and unaffected arms, but non-specific abnormalities were frequently noted in the EEGs. The results support the role of a central rather than a periphe

The mystery of phantom pain: growing evidence for psychophysiological mechanisms.

The direct, and much of the indirect, evidence supporting the existence psychophysiological mechanisms for phantom limb pain is reviewed. Phantom pain is shown to be a symptom class composed of different, but similarly described problems, each having its own underlying mechanisms. At least some descriptive types of phantom pain probably have mainly peripheral, as opposed to only central, origins. Although much of the direct data are preliminary, burning phantom pain is probably related to decreased blood flow in the residual limb, while cramping phantom pain is mainly related to spikelike musc

Psychophysiological responses to stride frequency manipulation in men and women.

This study examined psychophysiological responses to stride frequency manipulation during walking in men and women. Nineteen healthy adults (11 men, 8 women) completed two sessions: familiarization session (session 1) during which the preferred stride frequency (PSF1) and its corresponding speed (PWS1) were determined, and experimental session (session 2) that consisted of participants walking at four 15-minute treadmill counterbalanced conditions: the preferred stride frequency measured in Session 1 and being imposed in session 2 called PSF2, new PSF measured in Session 2 (PSF3), and ±10% dev

Pre-Stress Exposure and Psychophysiological Responses During Cycling.

Successfully managing physical discomfort and stress during exercise is essential for fostering resilience and a sense of accomplishment. Previous research suggests that individuals vary in their ability to cope with exercise-induced stress, and repeated exposure to stressors may enhance stress management skills. This study aims to investigate how demographic, psychological, and physiological baseline characteristics influence psychological states during moderate- and high-intensity exercise. Thirty-one healthy participants completed two randomized conditions: a 6-min cycling task alone or the

Treatment Effects on Psychophysiological Stress Responses in Youth With Obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Stress plays a central role in obesity development, but research on treatment options to tackle elevated stress levels in youth with obesity is scarce. The present study examined the impact of the Multidisciplinary Obesity Treatment (MOT; lifestyle intervention including physical exercise, healthy meals, and cognitive behavioral techniques) on physiological stress parameters in youth with obesity and assessed whether adding emotion regulation (ER) training on top of MOT is beneficial. METHODS: From an inpatient treatment center for obesity, 92 youngsters (mean [standard deviation]

Interest in inducements: A psychophysiological study on sports betting advertising.

Recent research has shown an association between the viewing of wagering advertising, which often presents inducements to gamble, and maladaptive sports-betting behaviours; however, the mechanism/s underlying the development of the intention to gamble remains relatively understudied. Eye-tracking and tonic electrodermal activity was recorded from 59 participants (including 49 regular gamblers and 10 non-gamblers), while they watched a series of advertisements. Following each advertisement, participants were asked to rate how likely they would be to take up the offer presented, therein. The num

Sleep and biological parameters in professional burnout: A psychophysiological characterization.

Professional burnout syndrome has been described in association with insomnia and metabolic, inflammatory and immune correlates. We investigated the interest of exploring biological parameters and sleep disturbances in relation to burnout symptoms among white-collar workers. Fifty-four participants with burnout were compared to 86 healthy control participants in terms of professional rank level, sleep, job strain (Karasek questionnaire), social support, anxiety and depression (HAD scale). Fasting concentrations of glycaemia, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C), total-cholesterol, triglycerides, C-

Pushing, pulling and manoeuvring an industrial cart: a psychophysiological study.

One of the most frequent manual occupational tasks involves the pushing and pulling of a cart. Although several studies have associated health risks with pushing and pulling, the effects are not clear since occupational tasks have social, cognitive and physical components. The present work investigates a real case of a pushing and pulling occupational task from a manufacturing company. The study initially characterizes the case in accordance with Standard No. ISO 11228-2:2007 as low risk. An experiment with 14 individuals during three modalities of pushing and pulling was performed in order to

[Peculiarities of clinical and psychophysiological status of elderly patients with osteochondrosis.].

We conducted a study of 220 patients in polyclinic № 91 in St. Petersburg. It was revealed that elderly patients with osteochondrosis are characterized by a high prevalence and severity of osteochondrosis against the background of metabolic disorders in the structures of the spine. At the same time, the actual condition of the spine does not always determine the severity of the pain syndrome. The effect of osteochondrosis on the development of comorbid pathology has been clarified. The ways of correction of the clinical and psychophysiological status of elderly patients with osteochondrosis su

The Sensorium: Psychophysiological Evaluation of Responses to a Multimodal Neurofeedback Environment.

The Sensorium is a multimodal neurofeedback environment that reflects a person's physiological state by presenting physiological signals via orchestral sounds from a speaker and multi-coloured lights projected onto a white surface. The software manages acquisition, real-time processing, storage, and sonification of various physiological signals such as the electroencephalogram (EEG) or electrocardiogram (ECG). Each of the 36 participants completed 6 interventional conditions consisting of three different Sensorium-phases with EEG and ECG feedback, a mindfulness meditation, a guided body scan e

The psychophysiological impact of childhood autism spectrum disorder on siblings.

OBJECTIVE: The negative impact of caring for a child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on parents' psychophysiological functioning has been widely evidenced. However, siblings, who also face emotional, social and physical challenges associated with having a brother/sister with ASD, have been less widely studied. This study examined the psychophysiological impact of childhood ASD on siblings. METHODS: A sample of 25 siblings of children with ASD (and their mothers) and a control group of 20 siblings of neuro-typical children (and their mothers) completed questionnaires assessing: (a) demogra

The relationship among psychological and psychophysiological characteristics of fibromyalgia patients.

UNLABELLED: This study examined the relationship of psychophysiological response patterns in fibromyalgia with psychological characteristics and comorbid mental disorders. Surface electromyographic data, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate (HR), and skin conductance levels were recorded continuously during baseline, stress, and relaxation tasks. Cluster analysis revealed 4 subgroups of patients who differed on pain characteristics and cognitive, affective, and behavioral responses to pain and stress. The largest group (46.7%) was characterized by elevated blood pressure levels an

Heterogeneity of psychophysiological stress responses in fibromyalgia syndrome patients.

Dysregulated psychophysiological responses have been observed in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), although the results are inconsistent. Surface electromyographic (EMG), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate (HR), and skin conductance levels (SCLs) were continuously recorded at baseline, and during a series of stress and relaxation tasks in 90 FMS patients and 30 age and sex matched healthy controls (HCs). The patient sample demonstrated lower baseline EMG levels compared to the HCs on all tasks. In contrast, the patients displayed elevated HR and SCL (sympathetic vasomot

Psychophysiological reactivity under mental stress in atopic dermatitis.

Effective neutrophil migration to sites of inflammation is crucial for host immunity. A coordinated cascade of steps allows intravascular leukocytes to counteract the shear stress, transmigrate through the endothelial layer, and move toward the extravascular, static environment. Those events are tightly orchestrated by integrins, but, while the molecular mechanisms leading to their activation have been characterized, the regulatory pathways promoting their detachment remain elusive. In light of this, it has long been known that platelet-endothelial cell adhesion molecule (Pecam1, also known as
