OBJECTIVE: Total or partial nasal amputation following tumour resection is one of the more severe facial disfigurements. Successful nasal reconstruction can therefore be regarded as restoring a patient's psychosocial health. The objective of this study, therefore, was to evaluate different determinants of patient's psychosocial functioning and their effect on patient satisfaction after nasal reconstruction.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study with a case-control study design was conducted. Level of satisfaction with nasal appearance and psychosocial functioning were assessed with validated quest

Adolescent mothers are at high risk for negative life events, such as previous childhood physical abuse, impaired psychosocial functioning, and young adulthood revictimization. However, little is known about the potential pathways in these events; hence, little is known about opportunities for intervention. This study used structural equation modeling to investigate mediators of the effects of parental child abuse on later psychosocial functioning and revictimization (in the form of intimate partner violence and sexual violence) among adolescent mothers, with longitudinal data spanning 2.4 yea

A study of the psychosocial functioning of young adults with a history of learning disability (LD) in childhood is reported. The design was a non-clinic community follow-up investigation of a cohort of children who had received special education, the sample frame for which was a birth-period cohort survey. Participants were 149 young adults (89 males and 60 females derived from a survey of the 33,800 children born in the Cambridge Health District between 1967 and 1973) at the stage of transition to adult services (age 18-22y), whose measured IQ scores in childhood were <80, and who had receive

The purpose of this study was to determine the course of the psychosocial functioning of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) over 6 years of prospective follow-up. The psychosocial functioning of 290 patients meeting both DIB-R and DSM-III-R criteria for BPD and 72 patients meeting DSM-III-R criteria for another Axis II disorder (and neither criteria set for BPD) was assessed at baseline using a semistructured interview of demonstrated reliability. Over 94% of surviving patients were reinterviewed about their psychosocial functioning blind to all previously collected informatio

Those afflicted with bipolar disorder often suffer from substantial functional impairment both when in episode and when in remission. This study examined the psychometric properties of a brief assessment of psychosocial functioning, the Range of Impaired Functioning Tool (LIFE-RIFT), among subjects with bipolar I disorder. The study sample consisted of 163 subjects who presented with bipolar I disorder at intake into the NIMH Collaborative Depression Study (CDS). All LIFE-RIFT items come from the Longitudinal Interval Follow-up Evaluation (LIFE). Follow-up data that were used to examine the re

PURPOSE: Achondroplasia (ACH) is the most common form of skeletal dysplasia, resulting in disproportionate short stature and medical complications. We review the literature on physical functioning, psychosocial function, and quality of life (QoL) in ACH individuals compared to average stature individuals or other short stature conditions. Studies that assess the association between these outcomes and height, limb length/lengthening surgery in ACH patients are also summarized.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase were searched through April 2021. Study inclusion criteria were: (1)

BACKGROUND: There is considerable evidence that child abuse and neglect has a significant impact on social relationships and mental health across the lifespan.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to estimate the prevalence of child abuse in Lithuanian adolescents, to identify patterns of abuse experiences using a latent class analysis approach, and to assess psychosocial functioning associated with these patterns of abuse.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study was based on a sample of 1299 adolescents from the Lithuanian general population aged 12-16 (M = 14.24, SD = 1.26) years.

BACKGROUND: Components of psychosocial functioning represent both relevant mental health outcomes and predictors for the further course of illness in patients with depression and other mental illnesses. Determinants of these outcomes beyond residual symptom levels have rarely been investigated. The present study aimed at investigating prospective effects of demographic variables, depression levels, and response styles to depressed mood on future psychosocial functioning outcomes in depressed patients.
METHODS: We followed up a sample of unipolar depressed inpatients (n=71) one, six, 42, and 6

Previous studies could not evaluate adequately the extent to which deviant levels of personality measures and psychosocial functioning found before and after a major depressive episode (MDE) should be attributed to subthreshold depressive symptoms. Our aim is to investigate whether pre- and post-MDE personality alterations and psychosocial disability truly reflect vulnerability, or whether they can be accounted for by the presence of subthreshold depressive symptoms. Data were derived from the Netherlands Mental Health and Incidence Study, a prospective general population study with three wave

Although their disease processes and treatments are different, patients with motor neurone disease (MND) and those with late-stage cancer share a common situation--one in which the quality of life, rather than a cure, becomes the focus of care. We report here a comparison of 126 patients with MND and 125 with metastatic cancer on a range of physical and psychosocial measures. Compared to cancer patients, MND patients were younger, had greater social contacts, but were more physically impaired. Cancer patients had more pain and were on more medication (opioids, steroids, and analgesics). Althou

Neurocognitive impairments are common in paediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumours and can relate to clinical and demographic factors. The impact of social or environmental factors, such as family psychosocial risk, is less well understood. We examined neurocognitive functioning in children with CNS tumours shortly after diagnosis and associations with psychosocial risk. This cohort study included children who underwent neuropsychological assessments within three months of diagnosis. Proportion, chi-square and t-tests were used to compare neurocognitive outcomes to norms and evaluate pre

PURPOSE: As more individuals survive prostate cancer, addressing survivorship concerns like cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) becomes increasingly important. Identifying modifiable psychosocial factors related to CRCI is critical in devising targeted non-pharmacological interventions. We aimed to investigate the psychosocial factors associated with perceived cognitive functioning in prostate cancer survivors (PCS).
METHODS: Adult PCS, either undergoing hormone therapy or on 'watchful waiting'/ 'active surveillance', were recruited for a cross-sectional survey. Perceived cognitive fun

This study investigated the relationships between adverse family conditions and the incidence of psychological abuse in childhood and examined how such abuse relates to emotional and social functioning in early adulthood. A survey of 1,769 students from the University of Economics in Katowice (Poland) assessed family risk factors (e.g., parental divorce, alcohol abuse, parental absence) and examined their association with childhood psychological abuse (ChPA) and subsequent psychosocial outcomes. Among participants, 223 individuals (12.6%) reported experiencing psychological abuse in childhood

BACKGROUND: Personality and coping may be related to symptom severity and psychosocial functioning in patients with recent-onset psychosis. This study aimed to investigate associations of personality traits and coping strategies with concurrent and follow-up symptom severity and functioning in those patients, and identify whether coping mediates relations between personality and symptoms or functioning.
METHODS: At baseline, 527 recent-onset psychosis patients (73 % male, mean age = 28 years) received assessments on personality (Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness - Five-Factor Inventory), copi

Prior research on the relationship between veterans' mental health and psychosocial functioning has primarily relied on male samples. Here, we investigated prospective longitudinal relationships between mental health and psychosocial functioning in 554 female Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans who were surveyed three times between two- and seven-years following separation from service. Mixed effects modeling revealed that increasing depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity predicted declines in work functioning. Increasing PTSD severity predicted declining parental functioni
