Treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders relies on the effective delivery of therapeutic molecules to the target organ, the brain. The blood-brain barrier (BBB) hinders such delivery and proteins acting as transporters actively regulate the influx and importantly the efflux of both endo- and xeno-biotics (including medicines). The aim of the study was to optimize psychopharmacotherapy in a big psychiatric hospital. Benzodiazepines with a relatively short half-life, such as temazepam (Restoril), alprazolam (Xanax), and lorazepam (Ativan), are better hypnotics for the elderly than those with a long half-life. The levels of compliance with psychotropic medication in three New Zealand community-based samples are reported. At younger ages psychotropics were not frequently used, only 2 percent of 15 to 34 year olds reporting use during a 24 hour period. Psychotropic drug use was most prevalent among elderly people. However, a substantial proportion, about half, of those prescribed for took lower or less frequent doses than directed.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal exposure to psychotropic drugs may affect the trajectories of brain development. In a register study, we investigated whether such exposure is associated with long-term impaired cognitive abilities.
METHOD: Individuals born in Denmark in 1995-2008 were included. As proxies for cognitive impairment, requiring special needs education, attending special needs school, diagnoses of neurological/mental disorder, missed final examinations, and low school grade average were used.
