Lymphatic filariasis in Zambia: A scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Zambia is among the countries making major progress in limiting cases of the neglected tropical disease lymphatic filariasis on the path to reaching global elimination targets. For this trend to continue, it is essential for strategies and policies targeting the disease in Zambia to be based on the most recent and relevant literature. The scope of research on lymphatic filariasis in the Zambian context is currently poorly understood. Therefore, this study describes a scoping review protocol which will be used to analyze the body of literature on lymphatic filariasis in Zambia. MET

Review of literature of radial nerve injuries associated with humeral fractures-an integrated management strategy.

BACKGROUND: Radial nerve palsy associated with fractures of the shaft of the humerus is the most common nerve lesion complicating fractures of long bones. However, the management of radial nerve injuries associated with humeral fractures is debatable. There was no consensus between observation and early exploration. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Google Scholar, CINAHL, International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, and Social Sciences Citation Index were searched. Two authors independently searched for relevant studies in any lan

Deciphering the intricate linkage between the gut microbiota and Alzheimer's disease: Elucidating mechanistic pathways promising therapeutic strategies.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiome is composed of various microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and protozoa, and constitutes an important part of the human gut. Its composition is closely related to human health and disease. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease whose underlying mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Recent research has shown that there are significant differences in the gut microbiota between AD patients and healthy individuals. Changes in the composition of gut microbiota may lead to the development of harmful factors associated with AD. In addition, the g

Citation analysis of the 100 top-cited articles on the topic of hidradenitis suppurativa since 2013 using Sankey diagrams: Bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory and debilitating dermatosis characterized by painful nodules, sinus tracts and abscesses in apocrine gland-bearing areas that predominantly affect women worldwide. New therapeutic interventions based on the clinical manifestations of patients have recently been introduced in numerous articles. However, which countries, journals, subject categories, and articles have the ultimate influence remain unknown. This study aimed to display influential entities in 100 top-cited HS-related articles (T100HS) and investigate whether medi

Open Agile text mining for bioinformatics: the PubAnnotation ecosystem.

MOTIVATION: Most currently available text mining tools share two characteristics that make them less than optimal for use by biomedical researchers: they require extensive specialist skills in natural language processing and they were built on the assumption that they should optimize global performance metrics on representative datasets. This is a problem because most end-users are not natural language processing specialists and because biomedical researchers often care less about global metrics like F-measure or representative datasets than they do about more granular metrics such as precisio

Clinical importance of the anterior choroidal artery: a review of the literature.

The anterior choroidal artery (AChA) is a critical artery in brain physiology and function. The AChA is involved in many diseases, including aneurysm, brain infarct, Moyamoya disease (MMD), brain tumor, arteriovenous malformation (AVM), etc. The AChA is vulnerable to damage during the treatment of these diseases and is thus a very important vessel. However, a comprehensive systematic review of the importance of the AChA is currently lacking. In this study, we used the PUBMED database to perform a literature review of the AChA to increase our understanding of its role in neurophysiology. Althou

The anatomical basis of upper limb dystonia: lesson from secondary cases.

Upper limb dystonia is a focal dystonia that may affect muscles in the arm, forearm and hand. The neuroanatomical substrates involved in upper limb dystonia are not fully understood. Traditionally, dysfunction of the basal ganglia is presumed to be the main cause of dystonia but a growing body of evidence suggests that a network of additional cortical and subcortical structures may be involved. To identify the brain regions that are affected in secondary upper limb dystonia may help to better understand the neuroanatomical basis of the condition. We considered only patients with focal upper li

MegaMiner: A Tool for Lead Identification Through Text Mining Using Chemoinformatics Tools and Cloud Computing Environment.

Virtual screening is an indispensable tool to cope with the massive amount of data being tossed by the high throughput omics technologies. With the objective of enhancing the automation capability of virtual screening process a robust portal termed MegaMiner has been built using the cloud computing platform wherein the user submits a text query and directly accesses the proposed lead molecules along with their drug-like, lead-like and docking scores. Textual chemical structural data representation is fraught with ambiguity in the absence of a global identifier. We have used a combination of st

Gamma Knife radiosurgery following subtotal resection of vestibular schwannoma.

During treatment of large vestibular schwannomas, incomplete resection (IR) followed by Gamma Knife surgery (GKS; Elekta AB, Stockholm, Sweden) possibly offers tumor growth control and good clinical outcome, and is being discussed as an alternative to complete tumor removal with its inherent risks, especially for facial nerve function. However, available data for this concept are limited due to the small number of published studies. To analyze the effects of combined therapy in a larger cohort, we reviewed the currently available data. Six studies comprising 159 patients with a tumor diameter

The prevalence of strabismus in unilateral coronal synostosis.

BACKGROUND: While there is a clear correlation between unilateral coronal synostosis (UCS) and ocular motility abnormalities, the literature provides little information as to the true epidemiology of strabismus, or the underlying etiology of these paralleled pathologies. The purpose of this study is to investigate the rate of oculomotor abnormalities associated with UCS and its management. METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients identified to have single-suture, nonsyndromic UCS treated by fronto-orbital advancement at a tertiary craniofacial referral center from 1977 to 2013 was perf

A critical appraisal of experimental intracerebral hemorrhage research.

The likelihood of translating therapeutic interventions for stroke rests on the quality of preclinical science. Given the limited success of putative treatments for ischemic stroke and the reasons put forth to explain it, we sought to determine whether such problems hamper progress for intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Approximately 10% to 20% of strokes result from an ICH, which results in considerable disability and high mortality. Several animal models reproduce ICH and its underlying pathophysiology, and these models have been widely used to evaluate treatments. As yet, however, none has suc

Surgical management of posttraumatic thoracolumbar kyphosis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Spine trauma is relatively common, and each year approximately 10,000 to 17,000 people in the United States will sustain a spinal cord injury and approximately 150,000 to 160,000 will fracture their spinal column. Posttraumatic spinal deformity is a common potential complication of spinal injury and poses one of the greatest challenges in spinal surgery. PURPOSE: To provide a comprehensive and current review of posttraumatic deformity focusing on the epidemiology, clinical and radiographical presentation, treatment options, and prognosis. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: A thorough

Intracranial aneurysms in children under 1 year of age: a systematic review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Intracranial aneurysms are very rare in early childhood. Because the location, morphology as well as the clinical and radiological presentation of these aneurysms seem to be different from those in adults, we performed a systematic review of the literature to discuss the clinical, morphological, and radiological features of intracranial aneurysms in the first year of life. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A computerized search of both Pubmed and EMBASE from before 1966 to 2005 was performed. Included were all articles that dealt with cases in which an intracranial aneurysm was demonstrated i

Quality of life assessment and reporting in randomized controlled trials: a study of literature published from Japan.

BACKGROUND: Standardization of quality of life (QOL) assessment and reporting in clinical trials is an imperative issue. While English-speaking countries have led this movement in standardization, there persists to be a limited amount of information from non-English-speaking including Japan. In this study, we bibliographically analyze the reporting of randomized controlled trials (RCT) conducted in Japan that used a QOL instrument. METHODS: A PubMed search of reports published between 1970-2003 followed by an examination of QOL reporting and its frequency of use in RCTs published from Japan.

Harmonizing Definitions for Progression Independent of Relapse Activity in Multiple Sclerosis: A Systematic Review.

IMPORTANCE: Emerging evidence suggests that progression independent of relapse activity (PIRA) is a substantial contributor to long-term disability accumulation in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). To date, there is no uniform agreed-upon definition of PIRA, limiting the comparability of published studies. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the current evidence about PIRA based on a systematic review, to discuss the various terminologies used in the context of PIRA, and to propose a harmonized definition for PIRA for use in clinical practice and future trials. EVIDENCE REVIEW: A literature

The evolving definition of essential tremor: What are we dealing with?

BACKGROUND: Although essential tremor (ET) is commonly encountered in clinical practice, historically, there has been considerable disagreement as how to best define it, and now with a growing sense of its clinical complexity, how to best encapsulate it. Here, I draw attention to five issues of current uncertainty. METHODS: A PubMed search conducted on June 19, 2017 crossed "essential tremor" with 9 second search terms (e.g., definition, diagnosis). RESULTS: There are several major issues of clinical and diagnostic uncertainty. Underlying each issue is a larger question about the nature of t

Autoimmune AQP4 channelopathies and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders.

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) spectrum disorders (SD) represent an evolving group of central nervous system (CNS)-inflammatory autoimmune demyelinating diseases unified by a pathogenic autoantibody specific for the aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channel. It was historically misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis (MS), which lacks a distinguishing biomarker. The discovery of AQP4-IgG moved the focus of CNS demyelinating disease research from emphasis on the oligodendrocyte and myelin to the astrocyte. NMO is recognized today as a relapsing disease, extending beyond the optic nerves and spinal cord to includ
