Public health issues related to animal and human spongiform encephalopathies: memorandum from a WHO meeting.

The transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) include bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), which was first described in 1986 in the United Kingdom but has occurred subsequently in several other countries. This Memorandum reviews the existing state of knowledge on all the known spongiform encephalopathies, and evaluates the pathways of transmission and associated hazards. The possible implications of the animal diseases, especially BSE, with regard to the use of animal tissues as animal feed, human food, and in the preparation of medicinal and other products for human use are discussed

Global trends in hepatitis C-related hepatocellular carcinoma mortality: A public database analysis (1999-2019).

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C is the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide and it significantly contributes to the burden of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, there are marked variations in the incidence and mortality rates of HCC across different geographical regions. With the advent of new widely available treatment modalities, such as direct-acting antivirals, it is becoming increasingly imperative to understand the temporal and geographical trends in HCC mortality associated with Hepatitis C. Furthermore, gender disparities in HCC mortality related to Hepatitis C are a crucial,

Interrogating health-related public databases from a food toxicology perspective: computational analysis of scoring data.

Over the last 15 years, an expanding number of databases with information on noxious effects of substances on mammalian organisms and the environment have been made available on the Internet. This set of databases is a key source of information for risk assessment within several areas of toxicology. Here we present features and relationships across a relatively wide set of publicly accessible databases broadly within toxicology, in part by clustering multi-score representations of such repositories, to support risk assessment within food toxicology. For this purpose 36 databases were each scru

Vitamin D and calcium insufficiency-related chronic diseases: an emerging world-wide public health problem.

Vitamin D and calcium insufficiencies are risk factors for multiple chronic diseases. Data from 46 recent studies from Europe, North America, South-East Asia and the South Pacific area clearly indicate that a low vitamin D status and inadequate calcium nutrition are highly prevalent in the general population (30-80%), affecting both genders. The extent of insufficiencies is particularly high in older populations, and in some geographical areas, also in children and in young women of child-bearing age, in ethnic minorities and immigrants, as well as in people of low socio-economic status. Research, curricula, and resources related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health in US schools of public health.

To assess the extent to which public health schools conduct research, offer planned curricula, and provide resources related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health, we mailed a self-administered questionnaire to individual department chairpersons at each school. Survey results suggested that departmental lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender research and curricular activities extending beyond HIV and AIDS were uncommon in most public health school programs. Expanding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health research and curricula may help health professionals improve their r

Public health impact of neovascular age-related macular degeneration treatments extrapolated from visual acuity.

PURPOSE: To estimate the potential public health impact of treatment with new medications intended to preserve vision in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS: A Markov model was used to simulate the natural history of AMD over the lifetime of patients with diagnosed neovascular AMD from clinical trials and epidemiologic surveys. It applied to a cohort of patients aged 75 years, with newly diagnosed neovascular AMD in one eye, whose visual acuity was 0.7 logMAR. Probabilities were calculated for the risk of AMD in the remaining eye and for premature mortali

Relation of trihalomethane concentrations in public water supplies to stillbirth and birth weight in three water regions in England.

We investigated the association between total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and risk of stillbirth and low and very low birth weight in three water regions in England, 1992-1998; associations with individual trihalomethanes (THMs) were also examined. Modeled estimates of quarterly TTHM concentrations in water zones, categorized as low (< 30 microg/L), medium (30-59 microg/L), or high (> or = 60 microg/L), were linked to approximately 1 million routine birth and stillbirth records using maternal residence at time of birth. In one region, where there was a positive socioeconomic deprivation gradient a

Exploring Inflation-Related Public Discourse Relevant to Social Determinants of Health Using Social Media Data.

Inflation, recognized as a social determinant of health (SDOH), significantly affects the daily lives of individuals through the rising costs of food, housing, and other basic needs, all of which are public health concerns. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation has become a prominent concern in the U.S. and has been linked to increased stress and poor mental health among adults. While data on inflation is tracked routinely, how it is discussed publicly is understudied. Social media platforms provide insights into how inflation is framed and experienced by the public, and these assessments may
