Cardiovascular diseases are a serious threat to humans. Arterial pulse monitoring using wearable electronics could help to assess the cardiac conditions of the wearer, which further reduces the possibility of a sudden lethal heart attack. However, pulse sensors are usually tightly bonded to the wrist during pulse monitoring. This scenario brings great discomfort to the wearer, but also causes unreliable pulse recording due to the susceptibility of motions and pressure sensing nonlinearity with high preload. To this end, a 3D-printed iontronic pressure sensor with high sensitivity (11.65 pF kPa

This study reports a wristwatch to automatically acquire the arterial pulse signal. A two-dimensional flexible tactile sensing dense-array is integrated in the watch. The dense-array consists of 29 × 3 ultra-small pressure sensing chips, enabling high-resolution tactile perception. The arterial pulse signal contains abundant information regarding cardiovascular conditions. Our wristwatch is able to measure the radial arterial pulse in all 8 dimensions: depth, strength, rate, uniformity, fluency, width, stiffness and stability. As far as we know, this is the first wearable system to record the

Ultra-endurance exercise causes significant cardiovascular stress, yet the vascular responses during recovery remain incompletely understood. This study examined the short- (12-18 h) and longer-term (7 and 28 days) effects of a long-distance triathlon on arterial stiffness and subendocardial viability ratio (SEVR) in novice triathletes. Eleven participants (two females, nine males), novice to long-distance exercise events, completed cardiovascular assessments at baseline (pre-race), 12-18 h post-race, and 7- and 28-days post-race. Measures included carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV), au

Atrial myopathy-defined as abnormal left atrial (LA) size and function-is associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and dementia. Central arterial stiffness is associated with increased atrial afterload and fibrosis and may be a risk factor for atrial myopathy. We examined the association of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) with LA function and assessed potential causal relationships. We included 2825 Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study participants from Visit 5 (2011-2013). cfPWV was related to echocardiographic LA function continuously p

Blood pressure indices reveal pertinent information regarding the risk factors associated with certain cardiovascular conditions. In the last decade, research has focused on determining which module of measurement is most relevant as well as exploring new investigative techniques to aid in detection and treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The rates of isolated systolic hypertension, arteriosclerosis and other diseases associated with ageing continue to rise as the elderly population grows. The cuff sphygmomanometer only measures blood pressure in the brachial artery. Pulse wave analysis

Alterations in sodium (Na+) relative to potassium (K+) intake increase systolic blood pressure, effects in-part attributed to enhanced pulsatile loads (pulse pressure) beyond steady-state pressures (mean arterial pressure). Whether this effect is through reversible changes (increases in blood volume and hence aortic flow [Q] or wave reflection [Pb]), or potentially irreversible structural changes in the proximal aorta, is unknown. In 581 black South Africans, we determined 24-hour urinary Na+ and K+ excretion and aortic function from central aortic pressure (radial pulse wave analysis [Sphygmo

BACKGROUND: Pulse-wave velocity is the speed of the blood pressure wave to travel a given distance between two sites of the arterial system and is determined by the elasticity, wall thickness and blood density. Pulse-wave velocity correlates well with arterial distensibility and stiffness and is a useful non-invasive index to assess arteriosclerosis. Arterial endothelial dysfunction is one of the key early events in atherogenesis, preceding structural atherosclerotic changes. This study sought to establish the correlation of non-invasive estimation of arterial wall stiffness by pulse-wave velo

An ever-increasing number of patients with chronic indeterminate Chagas disease are diagnosed with early vascular and cardiac abnormalities, as cardiovascular imaging becomes more sensitive. However, the currently available information on aortic stiffness (a prognostic marker for adverse cardiovascular outcomes) in these patients is scarce. In this study, we consecutively recruited 21 asymptomatic Bolivian adult patients with chronic indeterminate Chagas disease and 14 Bolivian adults, who were seronegative for Trypanosoma cruzi infection. No participants had a prior history of heart disease,

Patients with ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms (ATAA) only have a 10-20% chance of survival upon aneurysm rupture. If aneurysm growth is detected, however, surgical repair can mitigate the rupture risk. Current computed tomography (CT)- and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based surveillance methods require frequent hospital visits, increasing healthcare costs and reducing patient adherence. Pulse-based measurements, which could eventually be performed at home, are an attractive but poorly explored alternative. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of using frequency analysis of th

Arterial stiffness is a determinant of cardiovascular risk and has been increasingly associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), although its independent contribution remains unclear due to the presence of comorbidities, the most important of which is hypertension. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the relationship between OSA, hypertension, and arterial stiffness, with a particular focus on the mediating role of hypertension and its clinical phenotypes. Evidence from observational and longitudinal studies indicates that OSA is generally associated with increased arteria

PURPOSE: Ventricular-arterial coupling (VAC) is a crucial concept in cardiovascular physiology, representing the dynamic interaction between the left ventricle and the arterial system. This comprehensive literature review explores the changes in VAC with ageing and various cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This literature review covers studies on changes in VAC with age and common CVDs, such as arterial hypertension, atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure with preserved and reduced ejection fraction and aortic stenosis (AS). The review discusses traditional measures o

We propose a classification method for distinguishing atrial fibrillation from sinus rhythm in pulse-wave measurements obtained with a blood pressure monitor. This method combines recurrence-based plots with convolutional neural networks. Moreover, we devised a novel plot, with which our classification achieved specificity of 97.5%, sensitivity of 98.4%, and accuracy of 98.6%. These criteria are higher than previously reported results for measurements obtained with blood pressure monitors and are almost equal to statistical measures for methods based on electrocardiographs and photoplethysmogr

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Aortic blood pressure (ABP) is a more effective prognostic indicator of cardiovascular disease than peripheral blood pressure. A highly accurate algorithm for non-invasively deriving the ABP wave, based on ultrasonic measurement of aortic flow combined with peripheral pulse wave measurements, has been proposed elsewhere. However, it has remained at the proof-of-concept stage because it requires a priori knowledge of the ABP waveform to calculate aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV). The objective of this study is to transform this proof-of-concept algorithm into a clinica

Arterial tonometry and vascular calcification measures are useful in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment. Prior studies found associations between tonometry measures, arterial calcium, and CVD risk. Activated platelets release angiopoietin-1 and other factors, which may connect vascular structure and platelet function. We analyzed arterial tonometry, platelet function, aortic, thoracic and coronary calcium, and thoracic and abdominal aorta diameters measured in the Framingham Heart Study Gen3/NOS/OMNI-2 cohorts (n = 3,429, 53.7% women, mean age 54.4 years ±9.3). Blood pressure (BP) is one of the four main vital signs in medicine and may be a useful signal for wellness tracking and for user-aware interfaces in human-computer interaction. The current standard for BP measurement uses cuff-based devices that block an artery temporarily to get a single, discrete measurement of BP. Recently, there have been significant efforts to measure correlates of BP continuously and non-invasively from relevant signals like photoplethysmography (PPG), which responds to volumetric changes in arteries due to blood pulsations. In this paper, we explore a novel setup with

Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome results in rapid aging and severe cardiovascular sequelae that accelerate near end-of-life. We found a progressive disease process in proximal elastic arteries that was less evident in distal muscular arteries. Changes in aortic structure and function were then associated with changes in transcriptomics assessed via both bulk and single cell RNA sequencing, which suggested a novel sequence of progressive aortic disease: adverse extracellular matrix remodeling followed by mechanical stress-induced smooth muscle cell death, leading a subset of remnant smooth

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is characterised by recurrent episodes of partial or complete cessation of breathing during sleep and an increased effort to breathe. Patients with untreated OSA exhibit cognitive impairment that is only partly accounted for by hypoxia and sleep disruption, suggesting that other factors remain to be identified. OSA can involve repeated spikes of nocturnal blood pressure because of increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system during sleep. While high resting blood pressure is associated with cognitive dysfunction, it is not yet known whether pe

Microcirculation and macrocirculation are tightly interconnected into a dangerous cross-link in hypertension. Small artery damage includes functional (vasoconstriction, impaired vasodilatation) and structural abnormalities (mostly inward eutrophic remodeling). These abnormalities are major determinants of the increase in total peripheral resistance and mean blood pressure (BP) in primary hypertension, which in the long term induces large artery stiffening. In turn, large artery stiffening increases central systolic and pulse pressures, which are further augmented by wave reflection in response

Non-contact blood pressure (BP) estimation with imaging photoplethysmogram (PPG) that can be acquired by camera is a promising alternative to cuff-based technology because of its nature of pervasive, low-cost, and being continuous. Most of the non-contact BP estimation methods are based on the principle of pulse transit time (PTT) as being used for wearable cuffless BP measurement. However, PTT-based method on the one hand requires simultaneous capture of images of multiple skin sites with the sites being at a distance from each other; and on the other hand, it can only partially reflect BP ch
