Effective connectivity in cortical and subcortical visual fear processing networks during fearful face viewing in body dysmorphic disorder.

Individuals with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) demonstrate emotional processing biases; however, it is unclear whether differences are related to visual fear procesing network dysfunction. Understanding neural connectivity patterns during visual processing of threatening stimuli could provide insights into mechanisms that maintain BDD symptoms. Participants with BDD (n = 32) and healthy controls (n = 37) completed a fearful face processing task during fMRI. Using dynamic causal modeling, we compared effective connectivity between groups in connections among regions implicated in fearful face

Alterations of Thalamic Nuclei Volumes and the Intrinsic Thalamic Structural Network in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis-Related Fatigue.

Fatigue is a debilitating and prevalent symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). The thalamus is atrophied at an earlier stage of MS and although the role of the thalamus in the pathophysiology of MS-related fatigue has been reported, there have been few studies on intra-thalamic changes. We investigated the alterations of thalamic nuclei volumes and the intrinsic thalamic network in people with MS presenting fatigue (F-MS). The network metrics comprised the clustering coefficient (Cp), characteristic path length (Lp), small-world index (σ), local efficiency (Eloc), global efficiency (Eglob), and n

Quantitative high-field imaging of sub-cortical gray matter in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: In addition to neuronal injury, inflammatory, and demyelinating processes, evidence suggests multiple sclerosis (MS) is also associated with increased iron deposition in the basal ganglia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), particularly at very high field strengths, is sensitive to iron accumulation and may enable visualization and quantification of iron associated with MS. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the sub-cortical gray matter in patients with early-stage relapsing-remitting MS using multiple, and novel, quantitative MRI measures at very high field. METHODS: In total, 22 patient

Acute visual loss: just the beginning?

A 47-year-old man presented with sudden visual loss, optic disk edema, retinal ischemia, and limited upgaze in the left eye. Initial MRI revealed thickened, enhancing left optic nerve. Extensive work-up for an inflammatory and infiltrative etiology was positive only for Borrelia burgdorferi IgM by Western blot. Six weeks later the patient had numbness and weakness on his left side. MRI showed enhancing lesions extending from the left optic nerve to the optic chiasm, along the visual pathways bilaterally, mainly on the right side from optic tract to lateral geniculate body and pulvinar. Obstacles to reduction in infantile developmental dysplasia of the hip.

PURPOSE: Identification of anatomical structures that block -reduction in developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is -important for the management of this challenging condition. Obstacles to reduction seen on arthrogram are well-known. However, despite the increasing use of MRI in the assessment of adequacy of reduction in DDH, the interpretation of MRI patho-anatomy is ill-defined with a lack of relevant literature to guide clinicians. METHOD: This is a retrospective analysis of the MRI of patients with DDH treated by closed reduction over a five-year period (between 2009 and 2014). Neuromu

fMRI evidence of neural abnormalities in the subcortical face processing system in ASD.

Recent evidence suggests that a rapid, automatic face detection system is supported by subcortical structures including the amygdala, pulvinar, and superior colliculus. Early-emerging abnormalities in these structures may be related to reduced social orienting in children with autism, and subsequently, to aberrant development of cortical circuits involved in face processing. Our objective was to determine whether functional abnormalities in the subcortical face processing system are present in adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) during supraliminal fearful face processing. Participants

Microsurgical Anatomy of the Lateral Posterior Choroidal Artery and Its Thalamic Branches.

BACKGROUND: Only a few articles have been published about the lateral posterior choroidal artery (LPChA), and yet none of them contains data regarding the thalamic branches. METHODS: The LPChA and its twigs of the 26 cerebral hemispheres were injected with a mixture of a 10% Indian ink and gelatin. Following fixation in a 10% formaldehyde solution, the vessels were micro dissected under the stereoscopic microscope. In addition, serial cerebral angiograms of the 168 patients were examined. RESULTS: The LPChA, which was commonly singular or double and averaged 0.68 mm in diameter, most often o

Cortico-thalamocortical interactions for learning, memory and decision-making.

The thalamus and cortex are interconnected both functionally and anatomically and share a common developmental trajectory. Interactions between the mediodorsal thalamus (MD) and different parts of the prefrontal cortex are essential in cognitive processes, such as learning and adaptive decision-making. Cortico-thalamocortical interactions involving other dorsal thalamic nuclei, including the anterior thalamus and pulvinar, also influence these cognitive processes. Our work, and that of others, indicates a crucial influence of these interdependent cortico-thalamocortical neural networks that co

Diffusion-weighted and perfusion MRI demonstrates parenchymal changes in complex partial status epilepticus.

Diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) and perfusion MRI (PI) have been mainly applied in acute stroke, but may provide information in the peri-ictal phase in epilepsy patients. Both transient reductions of brain water diffusion, namely a low apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and signs of hyperperfusion have been reported in experimental and human epilepsy case studies. We studied 10 patients with complex partial status epilepticus (CPSE) with serial MRI including DWI and PI. All patients showed regional hyperintensity on DWI, and a reduction of the ADC in (i) the hippocampal formation and the pulvi

Delayed-onset hemidystonia and chorea following contralateral infarction of the posterolateral thalamus. A case report.

A 68 year-old man developed progressive hemidystonia and chorea 8 months after a contralateral thalamic stroke. The neurological examination also showed a right pyramidal syndrome without hemiparesis, a right horizontal sectoranopia, and a right hemihypesthesia for all sensory modalities. The MRI revealed infarctions in the left medial temporo-occipital lobes and left posterolateral thalamus, corresponding to the vascular territories of both the thalamo-geniculate and posterolateral choroidal arterial pedicles. The thalamic lesion involved the pulvinar, the lateral geniculate body, and the ven

Morphological abnormalities of the thalamus in youths with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The role of the thalamus in the genesis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) remains poorly understood. The authors used anatomical MRI to examine the morphology of the thalamus in youths with ADHD and healthy comparison youths. METHOD: The authors examined 46 youths with ADHD and 59 comparison youths 8-18 years of age in a cross-sectional case-control study. Conventional volumes and measures of surface morphology of the thalamus served as the main outcome measures. RESULTS: A mixed-effects model comparing whole thalamic volumes revealed no significant differences be

Multimodal study of multilevel pulvino-temporal connections: a new piece in the puzzle of lexical retrieval networks.

Advanced methods of imaging and mapping the healthy and lesioned brain have allowed for the identification of the cortical nodes and white matter tracts supporting the dual neurofunctional organization of language networks in a dorsal phonological and a ventral semantic stream. Much less understood are the anatomical correlates of the interaction between the two streams; one hypothesis being that of a subcortically mediated interaction, through crossed cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical and cortico-thalamo-cortical loops. In this regard, the pulvinar is the thalamic subdivision that has most reg

A disynaptic relay from superior colliculus to dorsal stream visual cortex in macaque monkey.

The superior colliculus (SC) is the first station in a subcortical relay of retinal information to extrastriate visual cortex. Ascending SC projections pass through pulvinar and LGN on their way to cortex, but it is not clear how many synapses are required to complete these circuits or which cortical areas are involved. To examine this relay directly, we injected transynaptic rabies virus into several extrastriate visual areas. We observed disynaptically labeled cells in superficial, retino-recipient SC layers from injections in dorsal stream areas MT and V3, but not the earliest extrastriate

Finding thalamic BOLD correlates to posterior alpha EEG.

Oscillatory electrical brain activity in the alpha (8-13 Hz) band is a prominent feature of human electroencephalography (EEG) during alert wakefulness, and is commonly thought to arise primarily from the occipital and parietal parts of the cortex. While the thalamus is considered to play a supportive role in the generation and modulation of cortical alpha rhythms, its precise function remains controversial and incompletely understood. To address this, we evaluated the correlation between the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals in the t

V1-bypassing thalamo-cortical visual circuits in blindsight and developmental dyslexia.

Vision rests on computations that primarily rely on the parvocellular and magnocellular geniculate relay of retinal signals to V1. Secondary pathways involving superior colliculus, koniocellular lateral geniculate nucleus and pulvinar and their V1-bypassing projections to higher order cortex are known to exist. While they may form an evolutionary old visual system, their contribution to perception and visually guided behaviour remain largely obscure. Recent developments in tract tracing and circuit manipulation technologies provide new insights. Here we discuss how secondary visual pathways me

Rapid processing of threatening faces in the amygdala of nonhuman primates: subcortical inputs and dual roles.

A subcortical pathway through the superior colliculus and pulvinar has been proposed to provide the amygdala with rapid but coarse visual information about emotional faces. However, evidence for short-latency, facial expression-discriminating responses from individual amygdala neurons is lacking; even if such a response exists, how it might contribute to stimulus detection is unclear. Also, no definitive anatomical evidence is available for the assumed pathway. Here we showed that ensemble responses of amygdala neurons in monkeys carried robust information about open-mouthed, presumably threat
