Aedes polynesiensis and Ae. aegypti breeding site productivity in two American Samoa villages were analyzed during a dry season survey and compared with a wet season survey. Both surveys identified similar container types producing greater numbers of pupae, with buckets, drums, and tires responsible for > 50% of Aedes pupae during the dry season. The prevalence of containers with Ae. polynesiensis and the density of Ae. polynesiensis in discarded appliances, drums, and discarded plastic ice cream containers were significantly greater during the dry season. Aedes aegypti pupal densities were si

In addition to causing myiasis in humans, Megaselia spiracularis Schmitz has also been reported as a forensically important fly. The determination of a minimum post-mortem interval (PMI) often relies on the determination of the age of the larvae and pupae. The pupal stage represents about 50% of the immature development time and the pupal age may therefore serve as an important tool in entomological PMI estimation. The present study focusses on the key developmental processes during the metamorphosis of M. spiracularis pupae at different constant temperatures (21, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36 °C). Th

Antibiotics are the major therapeutic arsenal against bacterial infections. Yet, beneath this medical triumph lies an under investigated challenge of the potential teratological and toxicological impacts associated with the use of antibiotics. In the present study, we have explored the teratogenic potential of five commonly used antibiotics (streptomycin, metronidazole, tigecycline, doxycycline and norfloxacin) on Drosophila melanogaster Oregon-R strain. Except norfloxacin, all other tested antibiotics significantly delayed the onset of pupariation. Consistently, metronidazole, doxycycline and

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: Aedes aegypti is a major vector responsible for spreading dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika viruses worldwide. These illnesses have increased globally due to climate and environmental changes. Vector control and management are the principal tactics for combating mosquitoes-borne diseases in the absence of an effective vaccine. The study aimed to ascertain bioactivities of Ageratum houstonianum leaf acetone extract ( Ah LAE) against Ae. aegypti .
METHODS: Bioefficacy of Ah LAE was tested against fourth instar larvae (L4) of Ae. aegypti using standard WHO protoc

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Plant-based products can provide safe and biodegradable mosquito control agents. The essential oils have a strong odor due to complex secondary metabolites and exhibit lower density than that of water, which renders them suitable to form a thin layer above the water surface. The present study was designed to evaluate the larvicidal, pupicidal activity of Eucalyptus and neem oils against Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated the activity of commercially available Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) and neem (Azadirachta indica) oils aga

BACKGROUND: Area-wide integrated pest management strategies that include a sterile insect technique component have been successfully used to eradicate tsetse fly populations in the past. To ensure the success of the sterile insect technique, the released males must be adequately sterile and be able to compete with their native counterparts in the wild.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In the present study the radiation sensitivity of colonised Glossina brevipalpis Newstead (Diptera; Glossinidae) males, treated either as adults or pupae, was assessed. The mating performance of the irradiated G.

A venom preparation from Nasonia vitripennis, a wasp ectoparasitoid of fly pupae, was assayed for lethality in different stages of insects representing ten different orders and in cultured insect cells. In most cases, the motor activity of the injected insects remained completely normal for 1-2 days after the injection and displayed none of the symptoms of paralysis commonly reported for venoms of the Hymenoptera. A natural host, the flesh fly Sarcophaga bullata, was highly sensitive in the pupal stage (LD50 = 5.4 and 5.5 VRE/g for nondiapausing and diapausing pupae, respectively), the stage t

Wasp pupa protein has triggered allergies in certain consumers. In this study, we investigated the allergenicity of alcohol-soluble wasp pupa protein (ACWP) and its effect on the gut microbiota of mice in vivo. It was found that ACWP caused skin erythema and diarrhea in mice, the up-regulation of HIS, IgE, IL-4, IL-22, and IL-17A, and down-regulation of IgG2a, IgA, and IL-2 in serum. The results also revealed that the thymus, spleen, and small intestine structures in mice also altered significantly, and the intestinal wall structure was disrupted. Fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) labeled dext

Silkworm metamorphosis is governed by the intrinsic and extrinsic factors. One key intrinsic factor is the temporal electrical firing of the neuro-secretory cells of the dormant pupae residing inside the silk cocoon membrane (SCM). Extrinsic factors are environmental like temperature, humidity and light. The firing pattern of the cells is a function of the environmental factors that eventually controls the pupal development. How does the nervous organization of the dormant pupae sense the environment even while enclosed inside the cocoon shell? We propose that the SCM does this by capturing th

A main challenge in parasitology is the development of reliable tools to prevent or treat mosquito-borne diseases. We investigated the toxicity of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) produced by Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense (strain MSR-1) on chloroquine-resistant (CQ-r) and sensitive (CQ-s) Plasmodium falciparum, dengue virus (DEN-2), and two of their main vectors, Anopheles stephensi and Aedes aegypti, respectively. MNP were studied by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. They were toxic to larvae and pupae of An. stephensi, LC50 ranged from 2.563 ppm (1s

As ectotherms, many insects spend the winter months in a state of suspended animation (i.e., diapause), lowering their metabolic rates to subsist on a limited store of energy reserves. The ability to lower metabolic rate during diapause relies, in part, on cold winter temperatures to intrinsically lower metabolic rate. Winter warming associated with global climate change may pose a challenge to diapausing insects by intrinsically increasing metabolic rate, potentially leading to the exhaustion of energetic reserves. We used stop-flow respirometry to measure oxygen consumption in response to te

Varroa destructor is one of the main causes of colony losses of the western honey bee (Apis mellifera). Many efforts exist to breed honey bees resistant to V. destructor. Varroa sensitive hygiene (VSH) is a commonly selected behavioural trait; VSH workers remove the pupae of mite infested brood cells with high efficiency, interrupting the reproduction of the mite. The cues and triggers for this behaviour are not yet fully understood. To determine what elicits this removal behaviour, we examined preselected VSH workers´ responses to four different groups of objects inserted into freshly capped

Embelin was isolated from the chloroform extract of Embelia ribes (Burm.f.) fruits; its derivative compounds 6-bromoembelin and vilangin were prepared, and they were evaluated for mosquitocidal activities against the third instar larvae and pupae of Aedes aegypti L. and Culex quinquefasciatus Say. (Diptera: Culicidae). The concentrations used were 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 ppm. Embelin recorded LC50 values of 5.79 and 5.54 ppm against the larvae of Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus, respectively. Similarly, the LC50 values of embelin were 10.23 and 6.93 ppm against the pupae of Ae. aegypti and

The expansion of the invasive mosquito Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) towards temperate regions in the Americas is causing concern because of its public health implications. As for other insects, the distribution limits of Ae. aegypti have been suggested to be related to minimum temperatures and to be controlled mainly by cold tolerance. The aim of this study was to assess the daily mortality of immature stages of Ae. aegypti under natural winter conditions in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in relation to preceding thermal conditions. The experiment was performed outdoors, and one cohort of l

This research intended to investigate if the presence of pesticides in the soil could affect the pathogenicity of Metarhizium anisopliae Metsch. (Sorokin) for Ceratitis capitata (Wied.) and assess the effect of conidia application as suspension or dry conidia. The fungicides chlorothalonyl and tebuconazol, the acaricide abamectin, the insecticide trichlorfon, and the herbicide ametrin were applied at the manufacturer-recommended doses. Soil samples were placed in glass flasks and were given the fungus as conidial suspension or dry. After pesticide application, 20 3rd-instar larvae were placed

Control of the vector Aedes aegypti L. is the main prophylactic measure for limiting the spread of dengue fever, chikungunya, and Zika virus diseases. In light of the environmental toxicity and resistance development associated with synthetic pesticides, plant-derived insecticides have been investigated as potential alternatives. A saline extract from Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi leaves and its fraction rich in cinnamic derivatives (designated F1) have been reported to be larvicidal against Ae. aegypti. This study evaluated the impacts of exposing third-instar Ae. aegypti larvae to sublethal

BACKGROUND: We explored the possibility to improve male/female separation (sexing) in Aedes albopictus by selection of two strains, one toward increasing sex dimorphism and another toward increasing protandry. In the laboratory we selected and crossed small males with large females to exploit dimorphism, and early pupating males with late pupating females to exploit protandry.
RESULTS: While selection for enhanced dimorphism was not a profitable character, the selection for enhanced protandry up to F10 produced significant improvement in the time interval between male and female pupation. By

The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, maintains its life cycle indoors feeding on pets. However, it must be emphasized that only about 1-5% of the flea population is on their hosts, the remaining 95-99% (eggs, larvae and pupae) are spread around the habitat. The eggs and dried blood feces fall from the coat of the animal on its sleeping, resting or feeding sites. In the first study, 100 pupae of the cat flea were applied on the resting sites of 6 cats' (3 female, 3 male), each in a separate box. Five days later all 6 cats were examined for adult fleas. From the 600 applied pupae a total of 326
