Exploring the photophysics of dibenzo[g,p]chrysene and tetraphenylethene in solution by static and dynamical quantum mechanical calculations.

Multichromophore assemblies (MCAs) of π-conjugated molecules exhibit complex photophysical behavior arising from the interplay between intra- and intermolecular interactions and environmental effects. In this work, we present a comprehensive computational study of two representative systems, dibenzo[g,p]chrysene (DBC) and tetraphenylethene (TPE), to elucidate how aggregation and environment influence their excited-state properties. By combining static quantum chemical calculations, vibronic simulations, nonadiabatic quantum dynamics within a linear vibronic coupling framework and fragment diab

Green-synthesized quantum dots from quercus brantii for infected polymicrobial wound healing: mechanisms and biocompatibility.

BACKGROUND: The rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has created an urgent need for alternative therapies, particularly against biofilm-driven polymicrobial wound infections. Although green-synthesized nanoparticles have emerged as promising candidates, many studies lack rigorous validation of their quantum properties, fail to clarify mechanisms of action, and omit essential cytotoxicity profiling in human cells. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize silver (Ag), copper (Cu), and zinc oxide (ZnO) quantum dots (QDs) using Quercus brantii acorn extract, confirm quantum confinement effects, and evaluate th

Quantum-like architecture of the social atom: mental marker coherence and the triple-resonance mechanism of cognitive activation.

Social Laser Theory (SLT) provides an innovative quantum-like mathematical formalism for tracking complex collective social activation dynamics. While its macroscopic manifestations structurally mimic laser physics, the underlying driver stems from the internal state configurations of the individual "social atom." Broadening this framework, this Perspective article introduces a prescriptive, quantum-like conceptual architecture for the individual cognitive system, formalizing the social atom as a composite entity where mental markers-spanning cognitive, affective, and valence dimensions-are re

The impact of natural organic matter on the aggregation, dissolution and sedimentation of cadmium telluride quantum dots and their interacting mechanism.

This study investigated how natural organic matter (NOM) affected the aggregation, dissolution and sedimentation of cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) in artificial freshwater and seawater, with a focus on the impact of NOM species and the mechanism of CdTe QDs-NOM interactions. Results found that NOM dispersed CdTe QDs aggregates by providing electrosteric stabilization and promoted the dissolution by facilitating their contact in most cases. Among the tested NOM, fulvic acid (FA) was the most effective for releasing Cd2+ in freshwater due to the strongest binding affinity complexing w

The Effects of Luminescent CdSe Quantum Dot-Functionalized Antimicrobial Peptides Nanoparticles on Antibacterial Activity and Molecular Mechanism.

BACKGROUND: With the development of bacterial resistance, the range of effective antibiotics is increasingly becoming more limited. The effective use of nanoscale antimicrobial peptides (AP) in therapeutic and diagnostic methods is a strategy for new antibiotics. METHODS: Combining both AP and cadmium selenide (CdSe) into a composite material may result in a reagent with novel properties, such as enhanced antibacterial activity, fluorescence and favorable stability in aqueous solution. RESULTS: AP-loaded CdSe NPs (AP-CdSe NPs) showed strong antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant

New insights into the release mechanism of Cd2+ from CdTe quantum dots within single cells in situ.

Cadmium-quantum dots (Cd-QDs) possess unique properties as optoelectronic devices for sensitive detection in food and biomedicine fields. However, the toxic effects of Cd-QDs to single cells is still controversial, due to the release mechanism of QDs to Cd2+in situ and the cytotoxic effects of QDs and Cd2+ respectively are still unclear. In this paper, the release rule of Cd2+ from CdTe QDs within single cells was investigated in situ by using flow cytometry method and the dose-response relationships were explored. Besides, an all-inclusive microscopy system was optimized for live cell imaging

Fluorescence quenching studies on the interaction of catechin-quinone with CdTe quantum dots. Mechanism elucidation and feasibility studies.

Changes of the photoluminescent properties of QD in the presence of oxidized catechin (CQ) were investigated by absorption, steady-state fluorescence, fluorescence lifetime and dynamic light scattering measurements. Photoluminescence intensity and fluorescence lifetime was decreasing with increasing CQ concentration. Dynamic light scattering technique found the hydrodynamic diameter of QD suspension in water is in range of 45 nm, whereas in presence of CQ increased to mean values of 67 nm. Calculated from absorption peak position of excition band indicated on average QD size of 3.2 nm. Emissio

Size-dependent stability of water-solubilized CdTe quantum dots and their uptake mechanism by live HeLa cells.

Water-solubilized quantum dots have led to a promising application in cellular labeling and biological imaging. The physicochemical properties of water-solubilized quantum dots, particularly in a physiological environment, are strongly dependent on their size. In this paper, we systematically studied the stability of mercaptosuccinic acid-coated CdTe quantum dots (MSA-QDs) of about 2.3 and 5.4 nm diameters in various buffers with different pH values and under laser irradiation by fluorescence spectroscopy. It was found that larger MSA-QDs showed better stability. Size-dependent uptake of MSA-Q

Photochemical instability of thiol-capped CdTe quantum dots in aqueous solution and living cells: process and mechanism.

The process and mechanism of photochemical instability of thiol-capped CdTe quantum dots (QDs) in aqueous solution were experimentally studied. After laser irradiation, the corresponding Raman bands of the Cd-S bond decreased obviously, indicating bond breaking and thiol detachment from the QD surfaces. Meanwhile, a photoinduced aggregation of QDs occurred with the hydrodynamic diameter <Dh> increased to hundreds of nanometers from an initial 20 nm, as detected with dynamic light scattering measurements. The bleaching of the photoluminescence of QDs under laser irradiation could be attributed

Illuminating MXene quantum dots: from surface chemistry to white lasing via photoluminescence mechanisms and spectral engineering.

MXene quantum dots (MQDs) have emerged as a distinctive class of zero-dimensional nanomaterials that combine strong quantum confinement with rich surface chemistry, enabling highly tunable photoluminescence (PL) properties. This review provides comprehensive mechanistic insight into the fundamental origins of PL in MQDs, emphasizing the interplay between core electronic structure, surface functional groups, edge states, and defect-mediated excited-state processes. Unlike conventional semiconductor quantum dots, MQD emission is governed by hybridized electronic states arising from transition-me

Induction of autophagy and endoplasmic reticulum autophagy caused by cadmium telluride quantum dots are protective mechanisms of yeast cell.

Quantum dots (QDs), with unique and tunable optical properties, have been widely used in many fields closely related to our daily lives, such as biomedical application and electronic products. Therefore, the potential toxicity of QDs on the human health should be understood. Autophagy plays an important role in cell survival and death. Endoplasmic reticulum autophagy (ER-phagy), a selective autophagy that degrades ER, responds to the accumulation of misfolded proteins and ER stress. Although many reports have revealed that autophagy can be disturbed by cadmium telluride (CdTe)-QDs and other na

Mechanisms of fluorescence decays of colloidal CdSe-CdS/ZnS quantum dots unraveled by time-resolved fluorescence measurement.

By narrowing the detection bandpass and increasing the signal-to-noise ratio in measuring the time-resolved fluorescence decay spectrum of colloidal CdSe-CdS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs), we show that directly after the photoexcitation, the fluorescence decay spectrum is characterized by a single exponential decay, which represents the energy relaxation of the photogenerated exciton from its initial high-energy state to the ground exciton state. The fluorescence decay spectrum of long decay time is in the form of β/t(2), where β is the radiative recombination time of the ground-state exciton and t i

Effect of shell thickness and composition on blinking suppression and the blinking mechanism in 'giant' CdSe/CdS nanocrystal quantum dots.

We recently developed an inorganic shell approach for suppressing blinking in nanocrystal quantum dots (NQDs) that has the potential to dramatically improve the utility of these fluorophores for single-NQD tracking of individual molecules in cell biology. Here, we consider in detail the effect of shell thickness and composition on blinking suppression, focusing on the CdSe/CdS core/shell system. We also discuss the blinking mechanism as understood through profoundly altered blinking statistics. We clarify the dependence of blinking behavior and photostability on shell thickness, as well as on

Anticancer drug-DNA interactions measured using a photoinduced electron-transfer mechanism based on luminescent quantum dots.

A sensing system based on the photoinduced electron transfer of quantum dots (QDs) was designed to measure the interaction of anticancer drug and DNA, taking mitoxantrone (MTX) as a model drug. MTX adsorbed on the surface of QDs can quench the photoluminescence (PL) of QDs through the photoinduced electron-transfer process; and then the addition of DNA will bring the restoration of QDs PL intensity, as DNA can bind with MTX and remove it from QDs. Sensitive detection of MTX with the detection limit of 10 nmol L(-1) and a linear detection range from 10 nmol L(-1) to 4.5 micromol L(-1) was achie

Pre-catalyst resting states: a kinetic, thermodynamic and quantum mechanical analyses of [PdCl2(2-oxazoline)2] complexes.

The treatment of cold ( approximately 3 degrees C) methanolic solutions of Li(2)PdCl(4) with two equivalents of 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline (Phox) results in the isolation of [PdCl(2)(Phox)(2)] (3). This complex undergoes remarkably slow isomerisation (CHCl(3)-d) at room temperature to a corresponding thermodynamic form. In addition to a theoretical treatment (DFT), the isomerisation behaviour has been analysed both kinetically and thermodynamically. These investigations lead to the conclusion that the initially formed (i.e. kinetic) isomer of 3 is the cis-form which undergoes conversion to the corre

Dispersion and repulsion contributions to the solvation free energy: comparison of quantum mechanical and classical approaches in the polarizable continuum model.

We report a systematic comparison of the dispersion and repulsion contributions to the free energy of solvation determined using quantum mechanical self-consistent reaction field (QM-SCRF) and classical methods. In particular, QM-SCRF computations have been performed using the dispersion and repulsion expressions developed in the framework of the integral equation formalism of the polarizable continuum model, whereas classical methods involve both empirical pairwise potential and surface-dependent approaches. Calculations have been performed for a series of aliphatic and aromatic compounds con

Assessing the ligand native-like pose using a quantum mechanical-derived hydropathic score for protein-ligand complementarity.

Elucidating the correct binding mode of drug-like compounds is crucial to reveal the molecular determinants underlying the recognition by the target protein and to estimate the binding affinity, thus guiding ensuing hit-to-lead optimization. However, identifying the near-native binding pose in docking experiments remains a major hurdle. Assuming that the hydropathic complementarity principle is the major driving force in ligand-protein recognition, the suitability of simple hydropathicity-based scoring functions to reveal the near-native pose was examined. A benchmarking dataset of 1000 ligand

Recognition of the wobble pair: quantum mechanical calculations of tRNA U34 or C34 modifications within the ribosomal decoding center.

Uracil at position 34 of transfer RNAs (tRNAs) is generally modified and can recognize G + 3 via two geometrically different pairs, anionic or tautomeric. We sequentially calculated the thermodynamic parameters of isolated U•G pairs in geometrically different states modified with s2U, mnm5U, mcm5U, mnm5s2U, and mcm5s2U, and found that the modifications differently influence their state transition energy (isomerization) and base pairing strength, thereby their formation. Both mnm5U•G and mnm5s2U•G pairs occur as the anionic or tautomeric form and the zwitterionic state is preferred. When tautom

Elucidation of calcium coordination mechanisms in cod bone-derived peptides and site-directed mutants using quantum chemistry.

The objective of this study was to elucidate the Ca-binding mechanisms of cod bone-derived peptides and their site-directed mutants using experimental and quantum-chemical approaches. Isothermal titration calorimetry showed Ca-binding was exothermic, spontaneous at 25 °C, driven mainly by ionic interactions. Binding constants for DYGGEY and GESGEAGDR were 1.120 × 103 and 1.024 × 103 M-1, with stoichiometries of 2 Ca2+ per peptide. Mutants DYGEGY, AYGGAY, and GASGAAGAR showed Ca-binding capacities of 4.64 ± 0.42, 0.73 ± 0.37, and 1.07 ± 0.55 μg/mg, underscoring the importance of carboxyl groups
